I'd be willing to bet that most of the ones moaning abut roping would do so in a heartbeat of a Secret Pally or Aggro Shaman stomped them hard from the off. SO many angels ....
I strongly doubt it. Most people actually do face a lot of secret paladins and aggro shamans, yet they still think it's wrong to rope (as seen in this thread).
I wouldn't go so far as to try to guess at percentages, but I think that Cagey 75 has a point. It's not like it's unheard of for people to engage in behavior that they would strongly criticize when someone else is the culprit. My suspicion would fall most heavily on those people who replied to my original post with insults and outrage. If that is someone's reaction to a series of questions, I don't think it is a stretch to think that they might react with the same vehemence in game.
If they BM me in the slightest way I'll bm them back better. I don't condone bm'ing except if you play the most mindless, annoying deck in the history of hearthstone AND bm on top of that? Oh, it's on! I'm already mostly playing decks that have good mu's against secret pally to get some more golden heroes so beating them plus some bm is fine by me. If they're particularly obnoxious and I know they're going to win I'll just take my dog outside without conceding or grab a beverage. If I'm going to win I'll rope and then unleash an oil combo or as much overkill as possible. Sometimes I'll trade things I don't need for lethal so he thinks he has a chance. If playing freeze mage I've even put up a block delaying the inevitable a whole turn, good times!
Dont to worry though people, you really have to deserve it for me to be a dick to you so it probably won't happen to you. Right?
Judging based on the replies so far, you might be the only Hearthstone player that ever BMs. Or, perhaps, the only player to admit it. Thank you for your response.
Not much point in roping unless you're winning and just BMing them. I've been roped by losers plenty and I don't even play secret paladin. Roping on purpose is just a loser's stall tactic. There is no need for it, even against secret paladin.
Sorry OP, but you are a disgrace to the community. It seems that you don't have any moral, neither any respect for the others. This guys who play Secret Paladin and you hate so much, have feelings and are as human as you and me. The most terrible thing here is that some people agree with you, and admire this kind of disgusting behaviour. That is depressing... One of the main priorities for all the members of this amazing community should be to help others to become better players, so most people can enjoy the game. Did you ever think that maybe some of this guys that play Secret Paladin are not very good players, and using this deck is their only chance against the most skilled people? Why don't you help them instead of trying to make their game experience miserable?
Why stop at Secret Paladins? Why not rope priests when they entomb you? Why not rope face hunters when they hero power every turn? Why not be a jackass to EVERYONE?
I'm gonna try to be as respectful I can with this, and perhaps this belongs in the salt thread, but here goes. Anyone who purposely wastes others' time in this game by, for example, roping every turn for no reason, is an extremely immature person. Secret paladins don't make the game less fun when they play on curve with high power minions. Face hunters don't make the game less fun when they kill you by turn 6. Freeze mages don't make the game less fun by stalling all game only to burst your face down when you can't do anything about it. Control warriors don't make the game less fun going to fatigue and building health totals well above 30. Control priests don't make the game less fun by using your own cards against you. These are all completely legitimate mechanics in the game, the amount of complaining I see about face hunters, secret paladins, or any deck for that matter is stupid. If you really can't handle that the game has certain cards in it that make it "unfun" for you, just don't play it. Just because you CHOSE to play a game for fun, and your opponent did as well, should be reason enough for you not to take out your anger on him because he beats you, he plays a deck you don't like, or any other reason. That is unbelievably petty and honestly most people who do that are the kind of people who can't stand up for themselves in person, so they do it online. There is absolutely NO reason to do anything that makes the game less fun for other players, so no it's not ethically acceptable. If it was cheating, it'd be different (but instead of roping you'd report them, or something like that) but playing a deck that's good doesn't mean you deserve to be harassed (it happens a lot on this forum). My advice to anyone who thinks they can treat people like garbage because they play a good deck (Wow, playing a good deck, trying to win?!?!) that you don't like is to find a different hobby, and stay away from games like this because people can literally do whatever the hell they want. While you're maliciously sitting at your computer roping every turn thinking "Ha! I showed him," your opponent is watching ESPN or surfing the internet, not noticing the asshole across the computer screen.
I've wanted to say a lot of this on so many posts I've read and it all kinda just came out here. No offense or hard-feelings intended, just my opinion on the matter. Have a good day/night everyone.

Thank you for the response. The one thing that I find curious is that, while just about every single person that has replied to this post has done so with anger towards anyone who would rope someone because they are deliberately taking away from their opponent's enjoyment of the game, not a single person has considered that their choice to play the sort of deck under discussion can be characterized in exactly the same terms. There has been an immense amount of discussion surrounding Secret Paladin. A lot of that discussion gets very personal and very heated. Of course, this is not limited to Secret Paladin. Think of the way the word 'Huntard' was thrown around when face hunter was dominant. For someone that is involved with the community at all, it would be hard not to realize that by choosing to play whatever the current most hated deck is that many of their opponents will in fact be rather frustrated (this is a separate issue from whether they 'should' be frustrated). Neither roping nor playing Secret Paladin is 'against the rules.'
I have heard many times from many different players that they hate playing against Secret Paladin (insert other hated deck here) but that they end up using the deck because they want to win. The only substantive difference between roping and playing that hated deck that I can see is that playing the deck brings good results--I win. Is there any room to ask that players consider the enjoyment of their potential opponents when making deck choices as well as when deciding whether or not to BM? Why is one considered selfish and not the other?

Because at the end of the day, hearthstone is still a video game, and video games are about having fun. Maybe your opponent enjoys the Secret Paladin strategy or maybe he likes to win. I don't understand what you're saying- winning is selfish? Roping is not a strategy, it does not help you win, it is just bad for everyone. If you don't enjoy playing against secret paladins, it shouldn't be your opponent's problem. It should be yours.

He is saying that the majority of the community hates secret paladin (but may play it to increase ranks) and the majority of the community hates the opponent burning the rope. So why is one okay (playing secret pally) but the consensus here is burning the rope is bad (intentionally) and should never be done,
I myself don't like secret pally but played it anyways last season to get to 5, sorry! But at the same time, I wouldn't mind playing against a secret pally because I believe in the Hodge Twins philosophy--> "Do whatever the **** you wana do"

Consider this example that I believe to be a fairly common occurrence in real life. I want to have some fun and climb the ladder.
I keep queuing up against Secret Paladins. I keep losing against Secret Paladins (for the sake of the example, assume that this is largely due to imbalance). I don't really get much enjoyment out of playing Secret Paladin, but I do like to win so I decide to switch to Secret Paladin for the grind to legend.
As I've stated before, I believe that there is absolutely nothing objectionable about the player who has made the decisions I described above. They aren't stupid or incapable of playing a skill intensive deck. I would never make those sort of charges and I cringe when I hear Paladin players described in those terms (usually far worse). I don't even think that they are selfish in the sense of thinking to themselves something along the lines of 'screw everyone else, I'm going to ruin their experience so that I can win more.' That being said, at a more systemic level, I think that the result of thousands of people going through those individually blameless steps described above is this. Many people are frustrated because they play a large percentage of their games against a deck that they perceive to be uninteresting and somewhat unfair. Another substantial group of players ends up using the 'overpowered' deck that they don't even enjoy playing in order to win two or three percentage points more often than they normally would. I fail to see how this is a healthy situation for anyone involved. As you said, at the end of the day Hearthstone is a videogame that should be fun. What I have been trying to get at is why that videogame ends up being less fun for Secret Paladin players as well as their opponents. I don't like to see Secret Pally players disparaged. I also don't like to see anyone who complains about having to face the same deck again and again called out for being losers etc. Finally, I do not believe that intentional roping has a chance to solve the problem in the real world. But I do think that one explanation for roping or BMing is that the people who do it are trying impose a cost on the people who play those decks in order to reduce the frequency at which those decks are being played. Of course, according to everything I've heard so far, no one would dream of BMing in any way unless their opponent starts it. So, I guess it never actually happens.

So why is one okay (playing secret pally) but the consensus here is burning the rope is bad (intentionally) and should never be done,
I myself don't like secret pally but played it anyways last season to get to 5, sorry! But at the same time, I wouldn't mind playing against a secret pally because I believe in the Hodge Twins philosophy--> "Do whatever the **** you wana do"
A little Sartrean perspective always helps!
I'd make just one minor adjustment to your statement: He is saying that the majority of the community hates secret paladin (but may play it to increase ranks) and the majority of the community hates the opponent burning the rope (but may do it anyway when they feel aggrieved).
Thanks. Don't have a clue who the Hodge Twins are, but Sartre is great.
1. I would say so. They are playing a deck that is well-known to be overpowered simply because they want free wins and a quick road to legend, which is not ethically defensible.
2. I don't, mainly because I don't want to waste my own time, especially considering they will likely start roping you back.
1) Yes. Roping on purpose is supposedly "immoral" in terms of the Hearthstone community "morals." That being said, playing a cheese deck that requires no more intellect than that mustered up by a severely mentally handicapped chimp, and winning because it utilizes a card that is grossly unbalanced isn't exactly strategic or fun for anyone - unless your only goal is to win by the easiest means possible, and you find clicking cards without any actual thought "fun." They're doing it to play quick games to get to legend - and making anyone trying to be original miserable in the process. By roping them, you're potentially saving some other poor unfortunate soul from having to deal with the mindless BS that is secret paladin. Essentially, you're suffering to potentially increase the pleasure of others - it's a selfless act. Plus, if secret paladins get roped enough, maybe they'll try playing a deck that requires at least a minute degree of brain usage to win with.
2) no.
3) No, the end result is the same regardless of motivation. In many cases, such as this, I don't think the motivation matters - only the end result, and whether that result is good or bad.

And when he had failed to find these boons in things whose laws are known and measurable, they told him he lacked imagination, and was immature because he preferred dream-illusions to the illusions of our physical creation."
I agree with a lot of your points, and at the end of the day my argument works in your favor too: if people are able to play however they want, I guess you're able to use all of your allotted time for each turn; however, I don't think it's doing as much as you think. It really is just wasting your own time as well as your opponents, which is just unnecessary in a game we all made the decision to play for fun. I agree it can be frustrating to queue into secret paladin numerous times in a row, but just play a control priest with pyromancers, freeze mage, or oil rogue if it becomes that large of an issue. In my opinion, the meta is in a really healthy spot right now. Many may disagree, but Shaman finally has a somewhat consistent and viable deck, Rogue is back after the letdown of TGT (and has new archetypes), Priest has a strong spot in the meta, Paladin is doing well as always, but compared to previous seasons it is a lot less omnipresent. The only thing that's strange is the lack of Hunter, isn't it weird how it wasn't that long ago when the game was practically hunterstone and now it's rare to see one? Off topic now, but anyway my point is that if you really insist on roping, no one can stop you, but ask yourself what it really accomplishes. Like I said, you can play however you want.

Thanks again for your response. As I long time player, I agree with your assessment that the meta is in a relatively healthy place right now. One thing that I want make clear is that I do not believe that roping is actually effective as means for changing the meta. The only way that it might be is if a significant proportion of Hearthstone's 30 million players adopted roping as a consistent response to facing decks that were both widely played and widely hated. That's never going to happen if for no other reason then that roping effects both players. One of the reasons that I posed my original set of questions was to find out whether some portion of players who BM are trying to bring about a sort of self-policing of the Hearthstone community.

It's like asking whether it is defensible to kill an annoying baby who won't stop crying.
So, yes.

Why stop at Secret Paladins? Why not rope priests when they entomb you? Why not rope face hunters when they hero power every turn? Why not be a jackass to EVERYONE?
Jeez
People who rope out of spite, should have their blizzard account permanently suspended.

This is for you OP...
You don't understand the original post at all. He's not condoning rope burning, lol.
I played Hunter before it was cool.
