Similarly to online poker, do you guys think Blizzard should incorporate some form of online tournament mode?
My idea would be as follows:
For an entry fee of 150 gold (like Arena) you queue up for a tournament, and the system matches you with 7 other players of similar "Tournament MMR" rating. (This rating can be hidden or shown, but doesn't reset every month, rather it would remain static. This is to prevent players from intentionally losing in tournaments and farming players who don't have good cards or aren't as skilled)
All rounds are single elimination, until the finals which are best of 3. (This is to keep games short and accessible for casual players).
After you win a round, you are shown a tournament bracket screen, which shows who is still playing, your position in the bracket, and who you can expect to play next. You can exit to the menu and do whatever you want, and the game will send you an alert when your next opponent is ready for the next round. If you are knocked out of the tournament, you can use the bracket screen to find a match to spectate.
In tournament mode, you are allowed to use any of your constructed decks.
The winner receives a chest, filled with gold, dust, and cards. Blizzard can balance chest rewards as they see fit. Blizzard could also do a setup where the winner receives some or all of the gold from the other players' entry fee, but this may be too similar to online gambling and blizzard might not like that.
In addition, Blizzard could also include a daily or weekly tournament which is larger than 8 players, perhaps 64 or 128 or even bigger, for those who are able to dedicate a sizeable portion of time to compete, or for those who prefer an increased field of players. A mode like this could have single elimination until the round of 8 where it becomes best of 3, semifinals are best of 5, and the finals could be abest of 7. Chests of increasing value could be granted out to the top 8 or 16, based on the field of players.
Based on well you place in tournaments over time, your "Tournament MMR" Rating will adjust accordingly, which over time will balance the fields and keep the professionals or players with a vast collection of cards playing together, and the more casual players together.
"Tournament mode is another thing that people have been asking for. We almost did it before Tavern Brawl, but we decided that Tavern Brawl was something more people would enjoy, and let more people have more fun each week." - Mike Donais at gamescom 2015.
They're most likely brainstorming ideas for it as we speak :p
