It's just a question that popped into my head as I was ladder today and fought against a deck that got some ungodly RNG from shredders and Unstables. I realized...unstable doesn't have any synergy with the deck. Unlike the tempo/flamewalker deck which can at least cite synergy for running unstable, Mech Mage doesn't really have a reason other than "it's a fun card" as far as I can tell.
If anyone knows a legit answer I'd be interested in hearing it.
2. It's a risk that can either be a huge pay off or a flop. I've had so many games that have been decided by a really great portal draw. I've also had some that have been very 'meh' that probably lost it for me. High risk, high reward.
I really think that compared to some typical subbing options, you probably run pretty even with what's better. However, I enjoy the randomness sometimes so I like it in my deck.
Unstable Portal is unique because it can single-handedly win you games. Chances are you'll get something good and the tempo is insane, especially when the play is something like turn 2 Unstable Portal -> turn 3 Boulderfist Ogre which your opponent should pretty much concede at

From what I know, there are two versions of mech mages: the Mad Scientist + Mirror Entity variation and the Mana Wyrm + Unstable Portal one.
Legend Season 7 and 12

Why do I run Zombie Chow in my Handlock deck. Because it synergizes with that the deck aims to.
Like Unstable Portal. It can often provides enough tempo.
Used to be a proud Handlock player.
Legend 17 times.
Still flirting with the ladder from times to times with Renolock.
