I am not seeing any rank for my opponents in standard. A friend told me that means they are Legend but how is that possible? I am not even at Diamond yet and I’ve seen it for at least the last five ranks.
Ok thanks! That makes no sense at all but good to know.
If you want to know a little bit more about MMR vs rank I can share what I know!
MMR is the matchmaking rating, a hidden number that changes every time you play a game of ranked. Your average win might increase this hidden MMR by 25 and your average loss might decrease it by 25. But if you play into a player with a significantly different MMR to your own (for example, someone much better), then a loss will be much more likely so you won't lose as much as 25, and might lose only 15, but a win is unlikely and proves you are a lot better than your MMR would indicate so it would increase it by a lot more (say 35). Because of the win streaks function, a player can climb rank faster than their MMR would indicate, so they could be in the Diamond ranks while still having the MMR of an average Platinum player, thanks to a lucky streak. This also happens with Ranked Floors (stopping players from falling below a 5th or 10th division in a tier once they reach it) meaning that a player could have lost 10+ games in a row at a ranked floor and have a very low MMR but still be in a much higher rank than their MMR would suggest.
As long as Blizzard matches players of similar MMR, MMR will be a much more accurate predictor of how good a player is than rank. But because Blizzard wants to use ranks as an incentive for players to climb, they instead choose to hide the MMR (so as to not confuse players with what their skill level/rank is) and only let the players know their rank/stars etc.

You no longer see opponents’ ranks unless you are legend. This is because you get matched based on MMR and not rank.
you cant see your opponets rank until legend. For climbing and competitive stuff
