Top players are still top players. The game always changes, and with every change, there's those that can't adapt. These players always blame the game. "It's only RnG now", "it's all mana cheating"... Yet good players still win much more consistantly than bad ones. Top streamers don't get so many views because they're soooooo good looking, I'll tell you that much... I understand, it can be really hard to adapt, but when you troll message boards complaining, no one believes it's the game... you just sound like a poor sport, and poor player... Work hard to adapt, or stop playing. Whining won't solve anything. Most players enjoy the game, and the game will continue to evolve. They will never freeze the strategy in the one meta that worked for you, so get over it.
Work hard to "adapt"? Adapt to what? Unlimited, Unskilled horse shit? *Top* players simply abuse broken decks. They arent any better than anyone else. They just grind out broken decks and the sheep clap their hoofs. Those are the facts. Go ahead - worship some streamer that plays broken decks all day and cheer for them because they are *good*. Right. Thats what it is. Because generating unlimited lackeys, always getting some ass-saving discovery card or whatever other Vegas-infused crap this game supports makes you a "good" player. Sure thing there, broski. Uh huh. Yep.
I started again with the last expansion and no, it's not worth it if you had your fill the first time around.
I stopped playing ladder pretty quickly and only play battlegrounds since then. Already got hundreds of hours out of it. It's a blast, since you can do it while doing something else.
So it's worth it to install the game, but not to actually play the normal mode.
It's kinda funny so many people considering this game being pure random trash still spend their time on a forum dedicated to it. If one of them cares to explain, I'd be happy to understand (no offense intended)
It's a card game, the random element is part of it. If that's not the type of game you like, I strongly recommend chess but beware you won't be able to say your opponent was just lucky.
Sometimes the dice will not roll in your favor, you have to accept that. I've been saying that when I started playing wargames, you can plan the perfect attack and roll the worst result out of it. The strategy is just different. You have to think ahead: what will I do if my perfect move ends up in a total disaster. It makes the game even nicer (I never said I never get mad when the opponent draws the perfect answer every time I try something, it's just part of the game). Some people cannot do that so they prefer to blame RNG. Of course they're right in some instances but not overall...
Back to your question, many people told you already,it's the best potential time to give it a try... Have fun
Why: the game is just a random shitfest of broken/toxic decks all around, its basically 1% skill and 99% luck. There are so many high roll plays that just dont make sense and blizzard is slow af and bad with balancing.
If you wanna try "cool" decks be prepared to lose a lot and get frustrated af.
Now, if you wanna play to win just go with the most broken shit (there will always be at least one) and you are good to go, but is that fun at all?
Its like when im playing galakrond rogue i just feel like im a cheater lmao... some decks are just too high above the others that its not even fun even when you win.
Not saying that i will never play again but thank god i have dumped this stupid game (i used to play everyday and was really enthusiastic about it, but all the nonsense just killed it for me).
Note: this is just my personal opinion, i myself wouldnt waste my time on it, but you should decide that for your self... if you find the game FUN even with that so many flaws then go ahead and play, there is a new expansion right around the corner with lots of new stuff to check out, but i doubt the "core flaws" of the game will EVER change.

i agree with everything this guy said.
although i might add, while he is right about the reason streamers are popular, you gotta admit some of them are also very good looking ;) RDU, Alliestrasza, Firebat, some may even say Kibler

geez, don't even wanna ask who pissed into your cup of coffee last morning. you wanna have some bread and butter with all that salt?
what you are ranting about is objectively wrong. there is a lot of streamers out there who clearly are extremely good at the game and get high rankings even though they play a variety of different decks. nobody wants to watch someone play the most degenerate aggro deck for two months straight, just because it's broken and successful on ladder. just look at players like Zalae or Firebat - they even do shit like deck doctor where they play unoptimized tier 3 decks at top 100 legend. Or Thijs, who's never afraid to make up his own deck ideas in high legend.
still, in the end of the month they usually finish as some of the best players in the world - consistently, for months or years in a row. if you really think that's just luck, then go buy some lotto tickets
Just before Dragons, I was pretty much in the same position OP, I had sometimes done dailies but never played more than maybe 25 games a month for the last few years despite being a hardcore beta and early expansion f2p player.
I bought the dragons bundle to "return" to HS in full and have been a little disappointed with it overall but still have had some really fun games and really appreciated that a semi-highlander format has been well supported with cards like Dragonqueen Alexstrazsa and I'm getting really excited for AoO seeing the card list.
HS is a tier 1 card game for sure but I think biggest negative that gets people upset (particularly young/unemployed/f2p people) is that the $$$ to value/fun/hours ratio isn't great right now and even I, with a decent entertainment budget, probably should have spent that dragon bundle money on something else.
Still, that said, I think right now is the best time to try it again since they are offering a free viable deck to returning players and changing how duplicate protection works, so maybe blizzard is trying to give a little more to players and take a little less. Dunno, you may burn out grinding as f2p, maybe not, depends on how much you can stomach the netdeck heavy community this game has in the standard format.
Whatever you do, don't listen to the trolls telling you Runeterra is good, that game is utter shit, worse than Artifact shit - it's like they copied Magic: The Gathering but narrowed it down to just the untap and combat phases then printed nothing but creatures and combat tricks. I got the beta starter pack but was over it and uninstalled after literally a single play session.
Really since TESL: Legends went under and Eternal is finally proving it's just a MTG clone with bad art and worse balance your options for good online digital CCGs are pretty much just Hearthstone and MTG: Arena. I personally like MTGA more and spend the majority of my card game time with it but it's also more expensive to play, I don't think you can really do f2p at all, so I say give HS another chance.
I do not understand how there are so many haters that claim to be free of the game and are sooooo glad they quit - yet, if they are so "free" of this horrible game, why do they spend so much time on the forums and hanging out on this fan site. Hmmmm? If you guys are so free of this game you would be hanging out elsewhere.
But for real OP, it's a great time to return, just do yourself a favour and don't invest too heavily into the game and you should be able to enjoy it plenty. It comes down mostly to personal philosophy on this but I would also advise you not to invest huge sums of cash either, because then, anything that happens to the game affects you that much more, at that point, they're not just changing up their F2P game that you enjoy, they're touching your investment in ways you might not like. Play for the fun mostly and don't get too invested, if you do that I would say it's a very enjoyable game still and there's certainly much to look forward to.
Probably the best time to get back into Hearthstone for years. You'll get a free deck after completing some 'welcome back' missions (pro tip: take the mage or rogue one), next week the new demon hunter class unlocks with everyone getting 30 class cards as well as a complete DH deck, and the yearly rotation is just around the corner, so there won't be as many cards you're missing.
Also, ranked is getting a makeover that will give out more rewards, and daily quests have gotten way better: no more 40g quests, majority of quests are 60g, and you have to do less to complete them. Oh, and the new duplicate protection rule which means that you won't get duplicates before you have all cards of that rarity (so, you won't get the same common ten times and the same bad epic over and over).
Ehhhh - that all sounds enticing but did you forget to mention that the game has removed basically all strategy & thought and replaced it with extreme high rolls, instant win cards, endless discovery, endless card draw, endless game saving "answers" being pulled out of ones butthole, unbeatable Galakrond decks(at least for a few classes), and more amazingly hilarious BS than you ever thought possible? Of course, you can be a wuss and abuse a broken deck and grind your way up the ladder but theres no fun in that at all. No skill required to do this though so have at it. For a real "treat", try Wild where its Pure cancer mode with Waygate/Secret Mage or some variation of unlimted resurrect Priest. Its more fun to nail your testacles to the table than play against those decks.
Sure - come back if ya like but do NOT spend a nickel on this slot machine. Stay 100% free of charge and accept that 99.999999954% of games are decided by things way out of your control. Once you accept that then its not too bad. Enjoy. Just stating the facts. :)
Like any other cardgame draw is key, and also how to build your deck.
If you say this game lack skill, the you have no idea what you are talking about. Its not all about draw and rng, but when you play your cards and when to hold on to them. Its so much more..
All cardgames require luck, and with discover and some rng this game would be fun. Without this then you could see in a turn or two who would win, and where is the point of playing then?
And btw, be effing happy you can play this game for free because of us that spend some money from time to time. Without us there would be no game for you to enjoy.
And to OP: its always worth coming back. Especially in the start of a new year, and with a new class.
"And btw, be effing happy you can play this game for free because of us that spend some money from time to time. Without us there would be no game for you to enjoy."
WOW. Tell me about entitlement. You seriously need to take a deep look into your mind and try to at least see where lies the problem. Because that sort of thinking should best be kept to yourself. I mean if it helps you better justify all the money you threw at Activision Blizzard all these years, fine. But stop patronizing other people over it. GEEZ.

Its true, weather u wanna admit it or not. Blizzard is a business and need to make money, to continue improving and updating the product.
Do you think there would be a HS without people paying for their product? Do you think they work for free?
Take a business cours and you may understand some day..
I used to play a lot, this was my go-to forum before. Therefore, I came back here. Thanks for all the reactions, it is concerning to me to read so many negative reactions even on a Hearthstone forum. Getting a free deck sounds really nice though

It seems to me like some people are only here out of sheer hatred to the game. Or maybe they're just trolls who like to engage in meaningless conversations about whether or not the game is pure RNG? That's probably it. I've learned a long time ago to steer out of conversations like that. Ultimately, what matters is whether you're having fun or not, and the only way to find out is to try playing a couple of games. I'll repeat the advice above: don't take it seriously, play because it's fun.
How is constantly being matched against your a counter fun? Playing aggro? Matched against priest. Playing some kinds of combo? Matched against hunter. Play some kind of control? Matched against quest warlock. Its a bullshit game which can (if you are very unlucky) make you lose more than 90% games purely because matchups. So you can fuck off about that "fun" part.
I will get a lot of disagreement.
I stop playing hearthstone for quite a while, but battleground is real fun for me. Give it a try, you might like it.
