Baku's concept comes from the sea serpent Bakunawa, which is told to have eaten six of the seven moons in the Philippine mythology. He's also considered to be the cause of eclipses. That's where the "Mooneater" name comes

Which is kind of weird because the (possibly related?) spirit in Japan that eats nightmares is actually named Baku. I suppose they just used the shorter name because it fits on a card better, but it does make it seem like they are mixed up on their mythologies.

I just noticed this and it amused me. (Forgive an old man’s humor)
Baku the Mooneater is kind of an awesome name. And hownhe got the name seems fairly predictable.
And yet.... if you look at the artwork of the card... hey! I can clearly see the moon is still up there!
Pfft! You had one job, Baku! XD
Took you some time to notice
Don't mind me just passing by
I only just looked at the card? Didnt take that long...
Azeroth may have more than one moon, so you don't really know if he ate one already...
edit: Or, you know, he can just bite off small pieces of the moon, just like the way you have chips while drinking beer.
Lol that’s very true. :-P
Well, this is a clear misconception. Here is what it is:
You all heard about the term "mooning" right? Now you go and complete that thought.
