I know it's not exactly a fan creations. However, it is related to creating cards since the lore is important. I thought it would be a great idea to make a thread that way I can direct or answer any and all questions you creators might have about lore and getting your wonderful ideas to fit into the World of Azeroth. Azeroth is expansive, extremely so and there's a lot of lesser known tibdits or nuggets that I know of that might make your card a reality to fit into Hearthstone. It's an epic Fantasy with a healthy dose of Sci-Fi. I can most certainly set you on the path towards something you're interested in.
I know Hearthstone has dropped 'Heroes of Warcraft', but it's still all about Warcraft lore for the most part, everything is based in it, even if they do get a little wild at times. So I figured I'd throw this thread up in Fan-Creations, since you are the guys who would be using it. I hope that's alright. So. Whether you're new to the lore or some-what knowledgeable, if you have a question I can answer it!
Please feel free to drop by and ask any question related to warcraft or fitting something into Warcraft, etc. I will answer everything that get's posted here. <3 Fair warning, there's a lot of cool stuff in Azeroth and beyond, I can't say you won't get a bit hooked into it once you dive in.
Also, WoWpedia is a great source to finding most things on lore, do note though it isn't perfect and It can't really help if you don't have a staring point. Other good sources would be NObbel's channel on Youtube. Nobbel87. He covers a wide variety of topics by talking about them.
Or you can just ask me. I'll be here!
Edit: It would be wise to search the thread for keywords using the function in the top right hand corner to see if your question has already been asked and find your answer.
Today in my free brawl pack I got Barongeddon, then I had a cup of fresh green tea. As a result of that, I think Priest is OP because my keyboard is not a mechanical one. I hope Blizzard will address this issue.
Yep! I'm so glad you're actually doing this, thank you so much. As of now I'm probably not moving on to the next phase of the you-know-what, so I don't really need any help with stuff, but I'll just drop this here for easy access as well.
Cool thread, really like the lore, but it's so complicated.
I only played Warcraft 3 and was during a period in witch I didn't understood too much English.
Anyway, what happened to Arthas after the frozen throne?
Ooh, Good Question. For many years after becoming one with Ner'Zhul as the Lich King, he led the scourge with the Helm of Domination. The Scourge are a writing mass of undead, numerous and capable of taking on the entire world.. Then for a time he grew Dormant. That is of course, until he was awoken. Reportedly the First thing he did as the Lich King in this time was remove his own heart, thinking any shred of mortality was to make him weak. Afterwards he made way towards SIndragosa's FAll, resurrecting the dragon as his own Frost Wyrm. Sindragosa was Malygos', the Blue Aspect, first consort who had perished. (Arthas' AWakening Cinematic for Wrath of the Lich King. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCr7y4SLhck )
During the interim his League of Death Knights was controlling the scourge, and training numerous new recruits for his ultimate Armies. Now he's ready to start a second invasion, not a large invasion, no just enough to Pressure the Alliance And the Horde by sending plagued grain to their settlements, anyone eating it becoming diseased and ultimately one of the Scourge. He set the stage for battle by Assaulting Stormwind and Orgrimmar, which were defended by the heroes of Azeroth. Once that was done both Varian Wrynn and Thrall declared they should make way to Northrend at once, freeing themselves from the Lich King's torment once and for all.
This was all according to his own plans. He wanted them to meet him in Northrend. He wanted to corrupt the heroes of the Alliance and Horde Killing them and raising them as his own.
Meanwhile, as the Player you start off in a scenario ultimately working for the Lich King as he sends you and the other death knights to wipe out the Scarlet Crusade base near their necropoli in the Plague-Lands. Darion Morgraine leads you and the other death knights are able to successfully do this and it is noted Arthas feels the presence of an old enemy of his, Mal'Ganis. Although he ignores it.
Once that is done he directs your attention to Light's Hope Chapel, a church of the light where many thousands of Alliance Heroes had be buried. He plans on taking the place and then raising them as some powerful scourge citizens. Light's Hope Chapel is where the Argent Dawn had currently been set up.
His numerous forces were ultimately no match for the Argent Dawn. They were lead by Tirion Fordring himself, Leader of the Argent Dawn. IT is as this point Alexandros Morgraine, Darion's Father, as a soul appears to talk to his son. To Try to reason with him.
Though his spirit is no match for the Lich King who has now appeared and sealed away Alexandros' Soul into Frostmourne. Frostmourne, if you don't know being the blade of the Lich King .It has the power to steal and seal away souls.
HOwever, realizing he had been betrayed and was originally just sent as a Distraction to die Darion and the rest of the Death Knights there were angered at the Lich King. Breaking free of his will they charged at him only to be swatted away like flies. At this point the defenders of the Argent Dawn did the same, they too being easily flung aside.
Darion is now incapacitated brought down by the Lich King's Will. Once More Tirion comes out to Confront the Lich King. Darion throws him the Corrupted Ashbringer and the Paladin's own will and guidance of the LIght restores the blade to it's Legendary status as the slayer of the dead once more. The blade that turns undead to Ash was now in the hands of the greatest living Paladin on Azeroth.
Knowing now the tides have turned he retreats, proclaiming next time they meet it won't be on holy ground. At this point, due to Tirion's Urging Darion and the Player Character Death Knights in WoW join their respective factions as Members of the Ebon Blade to lead the assault upon the Lich King in Tandem with the Argent Crusade.
After some initial wins against the Scourge the Alliance and Horde both meet up at the Wrathgate, the large gate sealing away and being the entrance to Icecrown. They enter a truce to battle the undead that had begun to poor out of the place, attacking them all. Later the Lich King appears slaying Dranosh Saurfang with ease. Presumably he would have done the same to all of them if it wasn't for Grand Apothecary Putress.
Putress under the guise of the Forsaken had the same hatred for him as many of them do. However he had no problem killing his own living allies sending plagued bombs towards the area it was designed to kill all things, living and undead. Putress of course had not been acting under Sylvanas' Will, but was a traitor to his own people in determination to destroy the Lich King. It is presumed Bolvar Fordragon also fell at Wrathgate.
Once more being forced to Retreat Arthas laments under his breath...Sylvanas. Of course, if you played those games you know their long history. But for those who haven't Sylvanas is an Undead Banshee possessing her own corpse. She was raised by Arthas and was once under his control but broke free of his control and now leads the Forsaken.
That tangent aside, let's keep moving forward. Later on Tirion found the frozen heart of Arthas disguised as a member of the Cult of the Damned, he witnessed it for himself in the Cathedral of Darkness. He intended to use it to try and restore some sense of Morality to the Lich King, but he realize it only held shadows of a long forgotten dark past.
Instead he ultimately destroyed it with the AShrbinger killing some of the scourge in the area and knocking him out. Darion Morgraine and the Ebon blade cleared out the place and rescued him. Later on during the Grand Tournament, they were assaulted once more by the Lich King's Forces. After dealing with Anub'Arak one of the Lich King's Lieutennants Tirion and Darion formed the Ashen Verdict an alliance between the Argent Crusade and the Ebon Blade.
Now the stage is set they feel they are ready to take on the Lich King. But First a detour into the Halls of Reflection. Both the Alliance and horde went in For Different Reasons. Jaina Sought to find some shred of Arthas left within, however Sylvanas merely wanted to get around many forces and get her revenge upon the Lich King.
They later found the blade, Frostmourne left alone and unguarded. From within Uther's Soul appeared telling them grave news. That if they kill the Lich King someone must take his place lest the scourge swarm upon Azeroth as an numerable army indiscriminately killing everything.
Then the Lich King appears and Uther's Soul once more vanishes into the blade. He chases the heroes of Azeroth away, they only survived due to making a quick get-a-way on one of the airships of the Horde and Alliance.
After some more time they finally prepare themselves to Assault Icecrown Citadel where the Lich King awaits. They battle their way through his forces ultimately reaching the top. Once there ARthas immediately Freezes Tirion, knowing his power and knowing he needs to win this battle.
Which, he does do, he kills all of Azeroth's mightiest heroes in one fell blow from Frostmourne. But it is at this point that Tirion calls upon the Light to break him free from his imprisoned state. He SHATTERS Frostmourne with the Ashrbinger, releasing all the souls Arthas had trapped.
They suspend Arthas in the air and King Terenas Menethil II resurrects the recently fallen heroes of the horde and alliance. THey then destroy the Lich King. Of course, no king rules forever. He takes Arthas dying body in his hands and his soul is finally at rest away from the horrors of the Helm of Domination. Here's the in-game cinematic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAIrj_Vqdfc
So Bolvar becomes the new Lich King and thus Arthas' destiny is ended. His soul is now forever tormented in the after-life in eternal Darkness.
Alrighty then, tell me all the important things about Dalaran and the Council of Six please! Thanks!
You got it! Dalaran began its history as one of the many human Kingdoms of Arathor. It was a city built upon a magical ley-line and quickly grew to prosperity and renown as the place where all magi would be trained.
However the city acted as a beacon for the Legion to come to Azeroth once more. Sensing this the HIgh Elves of Silvermoon sought to reach out to Humanity, beckoning them to turn away from their training of magic. However instead the humans had another plan. They would elect a Guardian, a powerful Magi, to protect them from the Legion. They formed the Order of Tirisfal to do this. At the same time they also formed the Kirin Tor, the electorate of magis that would chronicle all magic.
And this worked for nearly 2000 years. OF course, during this time the Civilization of Dalaran grew close to the Elves of Silvermoon. They both worked together, many elves coming to Dalaran to help train and further humanities understanding of Magic. Although it was still largely a human city many elves also took up residence. And later throughout history some dwarves, gnomes, and even goblins would do the same seeking to be taught by the humans and elves of the Kirin Tor.
During the Second War Dalaran joined the Alliance to help fight off the horde. The City was later attacked and they had to use the Eye of Dalaran to help rebuild parts of the city that were destroyed. They didn't play a very large part in the second war, ultimately. They were still allied with the Alliance but it is known they were secretive and didn't want to be heavily involved in politics.
However during the Third War the stage was set for numerous events to happen around Dalaran. They were powerless against the sweeping Scourge that had come across all of Lodaeron. The current Leader of the Council of Six and the Kirin Tor, Antonidas Ordered Jaina to take the many citizens she could across the sea to Kalimdor, away from the Scrouge. She did so and Antonidas fell in battle to Arthas.
Arthas later summons Archimonde with the help from the book of Me'divh to destroy Dalaran. Now the city left in ruins has only many scourged mutants, beserk water elementals and the occasional renegade wizard within. After some time Garithos leads an assault to reclaim the ruins of Dalaran. They were later joined by Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider, former Council of Six member and leader of the High Elves. They successfully push the Scourge out of the city.
However Garithos' had no love for the elves. He later ordered his men to trap them in the dungeons of Dalaran, performing mass executions of their kind. With some effort the remaining elves, led by Kael'thas, escaped to outland. What surviving power the members of the Kirin Tor had is left unkown. It is presumed some of them still existed like Modera and Ansim, but they really didn't have much pwoer.
Later Dalaran was rebuilt and a large magic bubble was put around the city to protect itself and ward off any outsiders. During some time between them and the Events of the Wrath of the Lich King the city was lifted by the magi and moved to Northrend as the floating wonder it is today. They moved it there to be launching point against the Assault of the Lich King Arthas.
At this point the Archmage Rhonin had been chosen to lead Dalaran and was also a member of the Council of Six that rules Dalaran. Although the horde had been banned for many years Aethas Sunreaver lobbied the Council to allow their forces into the city and they voted in agreement, leaving the city to declare itself as a neutral force.
IT should be noted that upon this time many members have positive dealings with the horde such as Jaina, Khadgar, and Rhonin himself. While also they sought to rekindle their friendship with the Elves, now known as the Blood Elves. Aethas of course, being an elf and instrumental in this.
Although some disagreed, this was the course of action they took. Now it trained and hosted wizards from all walks of life, the true magical city in the sky.
During the interim of Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria the Focusing Iris, a powerful magical artifact owned by the Blue Flight, was stolen. Kalecgos of the blue flight sought Dalaran's Aide and Rhonin sent Jaina with him to learn of the whereabouts of the magical artifact and who could have stolen it.
No one expected that Garrosh Hellscream, now the Warchief of the hrode, was behind the act. He had intended to use the device to help him reclaim all of Kalimdor, staring with Jaina's own city Theramore. AFter much pleading the Council agreed to help defend Theramore from the horde forces. It was seen that some sunreavers had defected from Aethas rule of them and intended to help Garrosh.
During the attack Garrosh pulled the ultimate move, dropping a massive mana bomb upon the city of Theramore. Rhonin sacrificed himself by using all his power to save Jaina from the blast of the bomb. Theramore was destroyed as were all the inhabitants, save Jaina. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBcH_eNvl8g Small in-game cutscene showing this.
Following his death Jaina was then appointed as the new leader. After discovering the Sunreavers were behind the stealing of the Divine Bell, an ancient artifact, she mobilized Alliance and SIlver covenant forces to detain and slay many of them, claiming them traitors to their cause. This Brought Dalaran back into the Alliance and ended the long thousands of years friendship the city had with Silvermoon.
Now it is time for the Legion to arrive. After the Battle on the Broken shore, Jaina ordered the city moved to Deadwind pass where Karazahn lay to help protect the eastern kingdoms from the assault of the Legion. The city had been moved there by a giant Blink spell, leaving many citizens nauseous, stuck inside walls, etc. so of course there was a lot of healing and helping to be done.
Believing that the City needed the help of the Horde Khadgar called upon the council to vote in allowing the horde back in. The vote passed leaving Jaina outraged. She teleported out of the city and it was left in Khadgar's Charge. He used the place as a means to research in ways to defeat the legion. Ultimately he found out with the 5 pillars of creation they could seal the Tomb of Sargeras and stop the demons from pouring into their world.
With that knowledge the city once again became the focal point of launching the assault upon enemies. THe city was moved to the Broken shore, now led by Khadgar. It lies close in proximity to Azsuna. Although the horde were let back in Aethas was not given back a position upon the council. With Jaina's Departure and Aethas removal from power the Council of Six is now. Ansirim Runeweaver, Modera, Kalecgos, Karlain, Vargoth, and of course Khadgar.
If you want I can explore all their backstories as well as past members backstories Otherwise, there's your summary of the city and the council.
Let me throw a curve ball, though... I always LOVED Grommash Hellscream. All the way back to Warcraft 2. He was just a tank in grunt skin with an awesome unit picture. Through Warcraft 3 he was still one of the most memorable for me.
So why, OH WHY, did his petulant son Garrosh get top billing in Hearthstone over his much more badass father?

This really isn't a question about Lore. I can only assume it's because when Hearthstone launched Garrosh was more story relevant at the time. He was the front-man of Pandaria and one of the major players in Cataclysm as well.
Here's a broad question. I'm not a WoW player, so I've missed most of the meta-plot after WC3.
Ragnaros (and the other Elemental Lords?), The Twilight Hammer Clan, the Old Gods, Deathwing... who's really in charge in all of that mayhem? Deathwing was corrupted by the Old Gods, the Twilight Hammer Clan serve the Old Gods, but they also seem to worship the Elemental Lords.
Is their a Hierarchy to this structure? It is an alliance of equal forces?
Also, what are Twilight Dragons, really? They're still dragons, not demons right? What corrupted them?
Twilight's Hammer was originally an orc clan obsessed with chaos and bringing about the apocalypse. They were under control of Cho'Gall, an ogre, who served Gul'Dan. During the 2nd war, when the Horde was on the brink of victory over the Alliance in Lorderon (aka future Undercity), Gul'Dan abandoned the Horde to try to gain the power from the Tomb of Sargaeras and took the Twilght's Hammer with him. The Horde attacked and nearly destroyed the Hammer and other deserter clans, but lost the war.
Cho'Gall eventually came to bring other races into the clan with the goal of releasing the Old Gods and brig about the Hour of Twilight which would end the world. When Deathwing rose and caused the Cataclysm, he aligned himself with Ragnaros and Al'Akir, while the other Elemental Lords allied with mortals against Deathwing. Twilight's Hammer also aligned with the dragon.
The Twilight Dragonflight is a race of corrupt dragons created while experimenting on Nether Dragons, themselves versions of Black Dragons caught in the destruction of Draenor. The Twilight Dragons serve Deathwing, but as soon as the Old Gods are released they would betray and kill him, as seen in the End Times dungeon of WoW.

Wow, that's...a lot of lore jeez. Blizzard went really deep with this one.
Thanks for the information! I'll be sure to write this down, and maybe I'll reference some of these events in my cards!
I'm totally gonna make the Pillars of Creations weapons in my expansion though.
Ok Ragnaros and the other Elemental Lords
ruled over Azeroth before the Old Gods arrived. The Old Gods enslaved the Elemental Lords easily. When the Titans put the Old Gods in their prisons they also created elemental planes for Ragnaros, Al'Akir, Neptulon and Therazane. From that point the Elementals are out of the picture. The elementals we encounter in WoW are summoned to Azeroth (most of the time by Shaman or Mages) from the elmental plane. They ususally serve the one who summoned them (unless the elemental is too powerful to be controlled like Ragnaros for example). When the Cataclysm happened the boundaries between the elemental planes and Azeroth were weakend or partly destroyed. That's why there is such an influx in elementals. Theese elementals are free and do whatever is in their nature (Fire elementals usually like to burn things...) unless someone subdues them and controls them, which the Twilight Hammer Clan likes to do to use them for their purposes. But ordinary Shaman are able to do the same.
While the elementals were banished the Old Gods turned to corrupt Neltharion aka Deathwing. So he actually serves them and does their bidding.
So now for the Twilight Hammer Clan/Cult. Many of its members use shadow/void magic. One cannot tap into theese dark powers without making some sort of connection with the Void Lords (very evil cosmic entities that created the Old Gods as physical manifestations of themselves) and see part of their vision of total destruction and chaos. This is why the Twilight Hammer seeks to destroy Azeroth and is so easily influenced by the Old Gods, after all, part of their powers come from the same source. I would agree the Twilight Hammer worships the Old Gods, but not the Elements. They merely use the elements to bring about destruction.
Twilight Dragons are the result of experiments initially started by Sinestra (Deathwings mate) and eventually perfected by Deathwing himself. Since Deathwing is their creator and serves the Old Gods it is only natural that he uses his invention to serve the Old Gods as well.
If there is some sort of Hierarchy to this it would probably look like this:
Void Lords Old Gods Deathwing/Twilight Hammer Elementals*
*= Note the Elementals here are Elementals that are weak enough to be controlled. Stronger Elementals like Ragnaros do not serve anybody but themselves. The only ones being strong enough to control entities like Ragnaros are the Old Gods which are currently locked away!

Okay, that helps. The Void Lords... are they Demons? I've always found the Old Gods/Demon distinction confusing too. Does the Burning Legion also serve the Void Lords?

Okay, that helps. The Void Lords... are they Demons? I've always found the Old Gods/Demon distinction confusing too. Does the Burning Legion also serve the Void Lords?
Wish I could collapse this but I'm on mobile. Maybe later. Anyway...
No, Demons and Old Gods are fundamentally different, although both are extraterrestrial entities. Old Gods are pure shadow energy created by the Void Lords, beings beyond reality that wants to return creation to primordial nothingness. They oppose the Titans, gigantic metal-skinned gods whom ordered Azeroth, subdued the Old Gods on its surface, and created many of the protoraces of the world.
Demons are chaotic beings born within Nether, or beings that have been corrupted by other demons. They near-universally serve the Dark Titan Sargaeras as the Burning Legion. Sargaeras once helped the Titans 'order' the universe, but was distraught by the evil of the demons and the madness of the Void Lords. He came to the conclusion that the only way to save the universe form the Void Lords was to burn it, so there would be nothing left to give them power. Then he forced the demons into an army, killed the Titans, and is actively destroying worlds.
Both sides want to take over Azeroth, but it has repeatedly resisted. The Old Gods are already here but subdued or dead and trying to escape. The Legion is actively invading for the 4th time (War of the Ancients, Wc3, Sunwell, now Legion) in the WoW Legion expansion.
Wow, that's...a lot of lore jeez. Blizzard went really deep with this one.
Thanks for the information! I'll be sure to write this down, and maybe I'll reference some of these events in my cards!
I'm totally gonna make the Pillars of Creations weapons in my expansion though.
Blizzard goes deep into a lot of things. It's not even close to being the most Lore Rich of the cities and they go even farther when creating Cultures, save the Gnomes who seem to get the short end of the stick a lot of the times. Also thanks to the others helping explain things. Y'all are awesome.
I do want to add to the post above though. Sargeras does not want to Destroy Azeroth, merely take it over and corrupt the World Soul still locked inside it. World Souls are what eventually creates future Titans. He essentially wants to make her his queen. And at the same time the Old Gods want to corrupt the World Soul onto their side.
Azeroth is literally locked in a battle of two opposing forces that are numerous, immensely powerful and want to destroy all of those living on it. Yet, it manages to hold out hope and spread life. Azeroth is one of the few planets that still exists which we currently know of able to repel all the advances made against it.
Probably won't be moving on in the expansion competition, but can you hit me up with a brief history of the Highborne/Naga? I know that Queen Azshara did some sort of weird stuff involving Sargeras, got screwed over somehow and got sunk into the ocean alongside her people, and then they all turned into Naga somehow, but that's about it.
I played through warcraft 3 campaigns but I never play WoW. I want to know more about the murlocs. Did they play any significant role in the wars? I was really surprised to see so many murlocs in hearthstone, who were no-name creeps in warcraft 3.

The Highborne were the ruling elite major users of Night Elven society 10,000+ years ago. Queen Azshara ruled the night elves, but favored the Highborne. From the capitol city they studied the magics of the Well of Eternity, and their reckless use of magic brought the attention of Sargaeras and the Legion. Azshara, a powerful spell caster in her own right, was seduced by Sargaeras and Highborne began summoning demons, initiating the War of the Ancients. During the war some Highborne abandoned the capitol to join the other Night Elves against Azshara. Eventually the Well was destabilized as Sargeras himself was nearly brought into the world. The Well imploded, casting out the Legion, and sinking the center of the once unified continent beneath the sea in the Great Sundering. The spot where the Well lay became the Maelstorm.
Unknown to most, the chained Old Gods were manipulating various powers and using the demon's invasion as a chance to escape their prisons. When the Well was destroyed, they offered Azshara and her loyal Highborne a chance to survive, remaking them as the Naga.
The renegade Highborne would eventually leave the Night Elves and become High Elves. After the 3rd War and their city of Silvermoon was destroyed by the Scourge, some of these would then become Blood Elves

The only significant thing I can think of is a group of them attacked Thrall as he and the Horde fled Lorderon for Kalimdor after freeing the orcs from captivity. While fighting Murlocs Thrall met Vol'Jin and the Darkspear trolls joined the Horde.
Cool thread, really like the lore, but it's so complicated.
I only played Warcraft 3 and was during a period in witch I didn't understood too much English.
Anyway, what happened to Arthas after the frozen throne?
Oooh... As someone who knows very little about WoW, I'm totally on board with this.
I'm going to leave this comment here for later easy access.

Love this! Will def take you up on it sometime :D

Yep! I'm so glad you're actually doing this, thank you so much. As of now I'm probably not moving on to the next phase of the you-know-what, so I don't really need any help with stuff, but I'll just drop this here for easy access as well.

I like this topic!

To add to the above:
Twilight's Hammer was originally an orc clan obsessed with chaos and bringing about the apocalypse. They were under control of Cho'Gall, an ogre, who served Gul'Dan.
