Maybe its just me, but it seems like Argent Commander has just vanished from the meta. Or at least, he sees way less play than he used to. Is this a direct consequence of Sludge Belcher? Does most of the player base just have better cards? Is it even worth crafting anymore for new players?
At rank 8 today I saw a weird zoo deck with arcane golem and argent commander in it, but I agree that the card seems to be vanished from the meta game. I think it is because it costs too much mana and the game became quicker + it can't deal with Belcher Loatheb, the tipical 5 drops before your argent commander turn. The card was best when the game was full of azure drakes, it was a direct counter.
I've seen him mostly in tempo warrior or warrior aggro variants. I wouldn't say Sludge Belcher is a direct cause of his popularity drop, but rather it seems like he doesn't work with a lot of deck strategies at the moment.
Control decks don't need him to control the board, and aggro decks don't need him as a finisher because of less costly options.
he was used to kill Azure drakes "for free" now when Belchers r on 5 mana slot and whats more important 5hp, what possible reason could u have to run him, when he cant even trade 1for1 with the efficiency he is supposed to :)
I still see the occasional Sprint based Rogue deck running a Commander or 2 as a "finisher".
thats pretty stupid by pure math ... if u use it as finisher go for Arcane Golem, cause what the hell would u care about givin your opponent mana crystal when ur goin to win the game that turn so u can do better or earlier combo with 4 mana same dmg charge
Because of the vast majority of options that Naxx brought to the 5 drop slot, mainly Sludge Belcher, the Azure Drake is not the "go to" 5 drop anymore, there are more options. Since the Azure Drake is the onlt one that Argent Commander can 2 for 1, it seems as though he is gone from the meta, because the other 6 drops are more viable as a whole.
There used to be a massive lack of good 5 mana minions. Their addition with Naxx has both given increased competition at roughly Argent Commander's place in the curve, as well as reducing the number of ideal targets by making the curve more even all the way up, rather than peaking unproportionally at 4 mana (and typically 4 hp).
This, coupled with a faster rate of play and more players having access to some great 6 mana legendaries these days all means that, while he's not a bad card, he's seeing a lot less play than when meta and general circumstances used to be ideal for him.
Naxx killed most of the divine shield cards and unfortunately the Commander fell victim to this as well. Just to many good counters to the divine shield crew. Still a great card in Arena though.
It's completely due to Sludge Belcher. you can't play 6-drops that lose straight-up to the most popular 5-drop. You'd be better off with Boulderfist Ogre, who can at least beat a Belcher.
I think if the Commander was a 5/2 with divine shield he would be played alot more, that way he could still be used to drop a belcher and survive. The 4 power for 6 mana is to harsh
i still see it occasionally, when going back through ranks at the start season. Still used as finisher i guess for people that don't have leroy or golem.
q2. Maybe if they lowered the mana by 1 it might be used again by some.

There is already 5/2 charge for 6 mana ... having another one with divine shield on top of it, that isnt likely to happen.
The problem with this card is that it still only trades with Belcher (the slime token takes him out). We need like a 6 mana 5/6 taunt to take out Belchers.

Saw him in a Hunter deck just yesterday.

RIP Leeroy...at least we have chicken...

Thanks for all the responses! Another question I'd like to add to the pool is: What should it take for Argent Commander to make a comeback?

Argent Captain
6 mana. 5/1. Charge. Divine Shield.
Incoming with new expansion. :)
Poetic.

Thats a very good idea also.
I've seen it a few times lately, heck one guy had two of them. Cleared them out with spiders and the like and they lost a ton of tempo.
Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

Lord of the Arena would be almost playable as a 5/6.
