So I checked the forums and didn't see any posts about this, so I thought I'd share my thoughts just in case. The other day, I thought of an awesome combo to use for Ethereal Arcanist which can be executed as early as turn 4. If you manage to draw an Ice Block and Ethereal Arcanist card, you can play Ice Block on turn 3. Then on turn 4, you can play the Ethereal Arcanist thus allowing him to gain +2/+2 after your turn's end. Seeing as how early this "combo" can be executed, your hero should still have plenty of health, thus not triggering Ice Block for a very long time, and allowing your Ethereal Arcanist to get stronger and stronger until it's eventually killed off.
yea mages actually do that on cockatrice the problem is he's a 5/5 when you play him(after you pass your turn) and they starfall, assasinate, dmg him then execute and whatnot. So far I did this 5 times and all it got was 5/5 and killed without attacking
Well, with your first-hand experience, would you still suggest trying to include him in a mage deck, or would you suggest another minion and/or ability/secret? I was thinking of trying to incorporate Blizzard or Faceless Manipulator into my deck.
I play with a frezee oriented deck with some secrets on the side with Ethereal Arcanist but the deck is really weak imo most mages go for standart taunt based approach with only powerful spells thats mage spesific like vaporize and pyroblast. Blizzard is a good card because it's a board clear which is much needed and also frezees argets so you're safe for one more turn if they live. Faceless manipulator is a good card in certain decks if you can copy sth strong (possibly with taunt) from the opponent then it's excellent but if you have no mions and the oppoent has no copy worthy cards in play it kinda takes up space, it's better to have him in a deck with more constant effect minion based build (since he can't copy battlecry and since you need minions to copy him you need a minion based deck which is not that good for mages because mages use spells the majority of the time)
He is a slow minion and the combo is kind of rare to happen (I mean with the ice block). Having two [card] Ethereal Arcanist[/card] make the deck even slower. On the other hand, a duplicate and then him might create a few problems to the opponent... happened to me twice and I was struggling to cope with the value the generate.
Part of the problem is wasting turn 3 for something you don't need yet. Feels like spending 7 mana for a 5/5. Even if he survives a turn it's still only 7/7 for 7.
Maybe if you could cheat out Icee block with scientist.

Let me change your mind

I think he would work in a deck with Counterspell and Ice Block

I feel Duplicate is a bit too slow in this kind of deck.
Played it alot. Works really well with Effigy, but don't expect amazing results.
I have made my own Archtype deck for Etheral, but.. i'm not really one to share but all i can say is i usually get him to atleast 9 lucky 10+
