I've been playing Hearthstone for two years (always maining as a Mage), but FINALLY the meta has turned simply beautiful for us Mages. Enjoy this deck. it will tear up the ladder until people figure out the tech slots.
------------------------------------
Q: What's unique about this deck?
A: It's tailored to the meta right now on ladder without overburdening the deck.
- Gluttonous Ooze (Golakka Crawler is too niche. Ooze takes out Mirror Medivh, AND paladin, as well as Hunter Bow)
- One Polymorph - (Counter intuitive to have a control card in a burn deck you say? Well, not with Buff Priest, and Paladin running Tirion/6 mana Dino buff on the ladder)
- Volcanic Potion - Perfect for Shaman (Harder to bloodlust all those tokens), Agro Druid's Living Mana, Paladin Murloc
- Spellbender - Other than Medivh, The real superstar of the deck. See below for all the many and varied used. From decimating the 6 mana Paladin turn, to protecting your board)
- 2 Meteors - (I got inspiration for this from Reynad. Full credit to him for this seemingly counterintuitive idea, and for the general concept of the deck)
- One Flamestrike - I found it EXTREMELY powerful with Medivh as added juice for the weapon, and against all other decks once I pulled it out to late game
- Many people run Medivh's Valet or more card draw, but per my testing this formula is absolutely ideal.
------------------------------------
Mulligan: Always throw away anything but 1 drops.
- I throw away Sorc Apprentices if I'm going first (except against Aggro/Pirates, as they can eat Weapon attacks), as you want to get value from them. KEEP Medivh in hand if playing against Mage - He turns the battle, and Mages on ladder have a slow enough start that it will work out for you. I had a string of 4 Mage wins in a row to get from Rank 1 to Legend, all with mulliganing/keeping Medivh.
- Mulligan aggressively for Arcanologists as well. When in doubt, always play an Arcanologist on Turn 2, even if you have other "better" plays (over 1 drops, or Sorc Apprentice + coin + Primordial Glyph), as you will be thinning out your deck for better future draws. Also, on Turn 3, play Arcanologist over Arcane Intellect - same reason as before (plus minion on the board).
- Mulligan hard for 1 mana drops/Frosbolt vs. Pirate Warrior. Save Frostbolt for their 2 mana 2/3 Pirate.
------------------------------------
This deck destroys:
- Mage Mirror Match (that doesn't have Gluttonous Ooze)
- Quest Mage
- Pirate Warrior
- Paladin (all types, including Murloc. Unless you get an awful mulligan and they get an insane one)
- Jade Druid
- Quest Rogue
- Midrange Hunter (*usually)
- In short, all of the decks that are in the Meta in high ranks on ladder now.
-This deck requires expertise, you will need to learn and get a feel for how everything works, the flow of the curve, and gameplay. Keep it up though. The deck is hella fun, hella strategic, and very successful.
------------------------------------
My tech choices are the optimal ones for this deck, IMHO:
1 Polymorph and one Spell bender to simply destroy Paladin (very prevalent in the top 5 ranks). The spellbent 6 mana spell can cause an insta-concede. Spellbender also works nicely against Rogues to steal a Shadowstep! And it can't be countered by Coin, etc. Also, destroys Quest Mage and their 4 mana Molten Reflection combo. It also protects Medivh and Alex late game, and disrupts Silence Priest. I think this is the most powerful secret (along with Ice Block) this meta.
The double Meteors, are absolutely key, as they trigger off Medivh, and take out the Priest archetype (along with the one Polymorph). Flamestrike also works nicely with Medivh, and in the aggro meta (you can survive till then with your excellent early game)
------------------------
Hardest Matchups:
- Agro Druid is Sickening against this deck. Expect to see a lot more of it if this deck takes off.
- Quest Warrior can be tricky. Be very judicious with your burn. Play it like a Chess match. Wait for them to trigger their quest, and make sure to have Medivh ready a turn before that, so you can apply more pressure. Also, try to cast your more expensive burn first (Pyroblast, Firelands Portal)
- Miracle Rogue (Quest Rogue is EZ with this deck) - The variant with Sherazin + 2 Arcane Giants + Sherazin + 2 Auctioneers can be VERY difficult. Save Polymorph for Sherazin (along with Highmane in Midrange Hunter, and Tirion/Ragnaros Lightlord Paladin, one of the main reasons I teched in the one copy of Polymorph). Try to save Flamestrike for Auctioneer so your other burn can go face.
1-4 so far with this version of burn control. Spellbender has been absolutely useless every game I've drawn it which is the majority of games.
*Yep deck is trash, it gets dumpstered by every single deck on ladder, not to mention now everyone seems to be teching flare or secret eater. And double meteor?? Just bad overall.
Wait you've been playing HS for two years now and only now reached legend?
Destroys jade elegiggle, played 4 matches with this deck, lost to 3 jade druids and 1 dragon priest... considering going back to the psygunther version...
daaamn, 5 face hunters in a row, 5 looses, i have fcuking unlucky today
Nice deck and great write up, Thx!
Is there a replacement for Spellbender? I do have the card, but Arcanologist pulls that secret and I'm left with only one Iceblock i(f I'm lucky.) I haven't had success with this deck. I lose to not having an ice block up.
Been looking for a new controllish deck with some push, and this sure feels like it! Didnt lose a single game from rank19 to 14, playing vs almost only hunter/rogue and 1 mage. Feels smooth, tho I suspect I had really nice draws, but the deck compliment itself with many of the cards.
If you're looking for a deck that requiers a bit of thinking and rewards you accordingly, this is it.
But they don't play around second meteor...
I'm having trouble with this deck everytime I run into Priests, silence or Medivh, doesn't matter. Tips?
currently most mage decks struggle alittle bit with priest:
silence priest is alittle too fast for you to burn and you really can't win on board control.
lyra/medivh control value priest, is able to heal out of burn range most of the time.
What I have found to work best with most mage archetypes is to make sure you play a strong control game early and then save all the burn possible for the last push
You want to make sure they aren't getting card draw and value out of cards like northshire and radiant early game if possible. worth a frostbolt to prevent them absolutely going off with a radiant, or a fireball to kill a lyra quickly.
Actually this deck is tailored against both versions of Priest! You shouldn't have any issues. (See above comment)
Use Meteor on the Humongous Razorleafs. Or use Polymorph. Save your weapon removal for the Medivh turn. Priest is auto-win with this deck. Need to just use your removal right.
Killer deck, works really good!
Imho is better to play 2x Flamestrike and only 1x Meteor
"This deck destroys: Pirate Warrior" - it's a lie. Pirate Warrior destroy this deck absolutely!
Why do you show the whole world that you're a noob, dude?
What do you mean? Mage has literally NEVER been worse than the average power level of decks in any given meta. Atleast, after Undertaker meta. This deck I would say is even slightly below the average power level of all Mage decks. Nice deck though :) Been having great success with it, thanks! Oh also! Midrange Elemental Shaman is tough to deal with if you can't end game before Kalimos is dropped.
