After aproximately 1 month playing almost exclusively Highlander Mage (reaching 1000 wins in the process, yay) and having tried all sorts of variations of deck Ive this one the most consistent and reliable against most of the decks out there.
It has a couple more draws with Bloodmage Thalnos and Starscryer and one more early removal with the Icicle (can work as card draw too). My biggest concern with most of the decks out there was running out of cards and not having enough early removal. These 3 additions were key to make the deck successful.
The point of the deck is very simple, you either clear all stuff against aggro or stall until you can pull the Archmage Antonidas (you can pull 3 fireballs consistently) in combination of the cheap spells + Alexstrasza (Thalnos and two fireballs > 14 damage. It beats all the slimy priests out there unless they get really damn lucky.
PS. You might notice that some of the "usual" cards are missing and for a good reason. 90% of the games the Tortollan Pilgrim was absolutely useless, and just a drawback against aggro. Same goes for Deep Freeze. They are just too expensive for what they end up doing most of the time. The extra secret is usually not useful either, as people play around it and you end up taking the damage to the face making it two wasted cards.
UPDATES!
Made some changes in the deck to match the somewhat slower meta after the July patch. Running Counterspell instead of Ice Barrier (this is still a bit of an experiment. Added also Deep Freeze to give the Dragoncaster more juice and Frizz Kindleroost, to allow the Dragonqueen to still be OP, and well we have a bunch of dragons so its always nice to have then discounted. Thinking about adding the Tortollan in the deck too.

Registered just to post a comment; because I'm happy to say I reached legend today for the first time (I am already over a 1000 wins with mage before trying this version) . I like the version; but I am not a 100% sure if it was the changing meta after the second demon hunter nerf or the slightly altered list that you presented. Thalnos and icicle served me well, Starscryer in all games that I played never managed to attack because 1 health just makes it to weak (especially after adding another class that can easily clear a 1 hp minion). For the draw it can be ok, but in my opinion that one can be changed to Ooze/Doomsayer. Biggest changer for me was Antonidas. Being able to go toe to toe with other control decks and in very late game suddenly present the threat of 2/3 fireballs meant the difference between just being out fatiqued and winning.

Hey man, glad you made it to legend! Im pretty sure its a combination of both. The deck suffered and suffes against the ultra aggresive decks, and had big issues clearing some of the nerfed cards, so Imt helped the win rate for sure.
About the Starscryer, we will have to disagree. The Ooze can be an option as it usually removes an attack from a weapon, the weapon as usually been used to hit you several times and the time you drop the Oooze there is 1 attack left. The Doomsayer gains you 7 health against aggro decks (usually) but its just a dead card against everything else.
Starscryer thins your deck 100% of the time unless they silence it, is also a two drop and can absorb one attack from a small minion early against aggro decks. For me the difference is that Statrscryer does its job 100% the time whereas Ooze and Doomsayer dont.
I've created an account on this website especially to leave this comment as it might help others :) So, I was stuck at D4-D3 for some days, and I had the feeling that I could't break through - until I tried this deck, and today I finally reached legend with it :) And it's my first time legend, so pretty excited about that. The deck works very well, only struggling vs DH but it's not that bad, with good mulligan and decent card draw you can win. Big thanks to the creator!!

Thanks :) Well, its a pretty important card but I didnt have it when I started playning the Highlander deck either (I was returning player, missing a bunch of cards and adventures).
I started using Flamestrike myself, as the hero is mostly there for removal... although it doesnt come close in effect obviously. Polymorph doesnt seem like a bad idea either, in case you need to get rid of a big Van-Cleef or something else really sticky that is usually handld by Reno.

I didnt get 1000 wins, I reached 1000 wins. Small difference there! I did start at around 850 though :)
Just hit legend with this combination of Highlander Mage! The extra draw is very handy, and the Bloodmage Thalnos + 2 fireballs combo helped me beat a priest. :)
last boss was a egg warrior, I had the dragon caster with a puzzle in hand so I prayed to rngesus and used it and it used the 10 mana stampede card from hunter so it gave me a bunch of minions who all hit face. He quit so it was a easy game lol.

i dont have thanos, any good replacement for that? is Ooze okay?
Ive played with Ooze in the deck and it is obviously useful as there are a bunch of weapon heavy decks around. I prefer Thanos because of the card draw, but Ooze its still a useful 2 drop.
I have been getting my butt kicked up and down with this deck, I do not know how on earth you went from D5-Legend I've won 1 game out of I can't count how many. That box has done me more harm then good every time but once what i've played it, it's way to RNG with what it does, I think for the same cost I'd rather do Pyroblast.
I agree 100% about the box, it is probably my least favourite part of the deck and it has won me very few games... Its just there because SOMETIMES, seldom in my opinion, it can save you from death. It is however not a card thats gonna win you the game. I guess you maybbe have been unlucky. Bad card draws happen, and with Highlander decks you cant really afford that.

How to deal with Maly Locks?
Id say its all about tempo in that matchup. They dont have much early play so try to take them down as fast as possible as possible, and keep control of the board. In that match you have be the aggressive player.
Maybe Ive been lucky, but I usually dont have problems against them although I understand it might be 50/50 on that one :(
Hello, I agree with pretty much all the changes you’ve made to the standard list such as taking out flame ward and ancient mysteries. The only thing I wanted to comment on was twilight drake, have you found your dragon activated cards have suffered for it because I sometimes struggle to have a dragon in hand to activate them. Will be trying this version out though for sure!
