Legend (EU)
After aproximately 1 month playing almost exclusively Highlander Mage (reaching 1000 wins in the process, yay) and having tried all sorts of variations of deck Ive this one the most consistent and reliable against most of the decks out there.
It has a couple more draws with Bloodmage Thalnos and Starscryer and one more early removal with the Icicle (can work as card draw too). My biggest concern with most of the decks out there was running out of cards and not having enough early removal. These 3 additions were key to make the deck successful.
The point of the deck is very simple, you either clear all stuff against aggro or stall until you can pull the Archmage Antonidas (you can pull 3 fireballs consistently) in combination of the cheap spells + Alexstrasza (Thalnos and two fireballs > 14 damage. It beats all the slimy priests out there unless they get really damn lucky.
PS. You might notice that some of the "usual" cards are missing and for a good reason. 90% of the games the Tortollan Pilgrim was absolutely useless, and just a drawback against aggro. Same goes for Deep Freeze. They are just too expensive for what they end up doing most of the time. The extra secret is usually not useful either, as people play around it and you end up taking the damage to the face making it two wasted cards.
UPDATES!
Made some changes in the deck to match the somewhat slower meta after the July patch. Running Counterspell instead of Ice Barrier (this is still a bit of an experiment. Added also Deep Freeze to give the Dragoncaster more juice and Frizz Kindleroost, to allow the Dragonqueen to still be OP, and well we have a bunch of dragons so its always nice to have then discounted. Thinking about adding the Tortollan in the deck too.
how do you beat galakrond priest?
Lost ten times in a row because of bomb warrior and hunter.
So I removed Imprisoned Obsverver cause it's too slow for Flame Ward. I removed Escaped Manasaber for Kobold Stickyfinger.
Im not surprised, that deck is probably the worst match up.
hi, I just tried highlander mage decks recently but I still missing Astromancer Solarian, Khadgar and The Amazing Reno. What do you think is better to get first?
Hey, so The Amazing Reno you can only get if you buy and beat the Galakrond Awakening expansion... it is a PRETTY critical card in the deck though. And Solarian vs Khadgar, Solarian everyday :)
thanks man!
So I've been trying this deck out the last couple days. Running Ooze instead of Thalnos simply because I had to choose between crafting him or Antonidas. It could just be the games I've played. But I haven't figured out the best way to play him to maximize his effectiveness. I usually get one fireball before the opponent spends mana and resources to kill him.
Which, now that I wrote that. Makes sense since that's less damage to my.face.
If I had to choose Id go for old Antonidas too for sure, although Thalnos might see more play in other decks you might play.
About Antonidas, he is just needed to win a lot of control match-ups, he provides you with a win condition instead of just hoping for the best getting enough damage from the ohter cards. And I would say I get 2 fireballs from him almost always.
Against aggro or any midrangy stuff that goes around, sometime you just play him for tempo or just as a "taunt" mininon.
I never thought of playing him on curve as a off-taunt minion. I guess because of his potential he could scare the opponent into clearing him first.
I'm working my way through Gold right now. I don't think I've beaten a single hunter yet and I'm 50/50 in mirror matches. Really depends who got the better box.
There is no other Highlander Mage deck as enjoyable for me as this one. I really have a lot of fun with it. So far 23-15, but I'm pretty sure better players than me can make even better winrate with this deck.
I obviously agree! I think the enjoyability comes from the fact that its more reliable than the other Highlander Mage decks.
It's perfectly balanced, I guess. Gives you so many possibilities, depending on opponent. Good for aggro, and tempo thanks to taunts, small spells, and aoe spells in mid game. Good as a control at late game. If you feel, you can fight for the board, if you want pressure, you can pressure with big minions, if you need help, you have some possibilities, and RNG cards, that can help you.
I had so many "I'm fucked" games, that I won after all. And it's pretty sweet feeling after such wins. Rogues and Priests are the biggest threat to me, but I'm still learning, how to respond in those games.
I have a lot of troube agains Rogues most of the time, as they run 100 cards in their decks and you cannot really counter their bullshit. Maly-warlock can be hard too, considering they can deal 30 damage in a turn.
Yup, since Galakrond expansion Rogue is insane. With infinite lackeys, infinite "you never know what" cards, infinite dragons, spells, minions. And now with Secrets, Stealth it's crazy. And every time you think, you got this, you control the game, next turn more random shit.
Great deck - reached platinium 4 with it (62% winrate overall)
Nice one!
Made Legend again this month. Last month was a different highlander Mage. I have to say, though, with this deck Antonidas has won be a loot of games.
Antonidas is key against all of those control decks out there (Quest Warlock might be the more difficult one, but that one is probably the most broken deck if played somewhat well).
best alternative for icicle?
I really like Icicle as an alternative for Frostbolt, to have two different options. But if you can add either Doomsayer or Swamp Ooze to the list, two solid two drops for different reasons.
