Quick Note: There's some good questions in the comments section, so read through those for additional nuggets!
Update 8/19: With all the Gigglings around, adding in Blood Knight can be strong. Consider taking out Reckless or Spellbreakers.
Update 8/13: Now with some general matchup advice! Adding more soon.
Most of the guide will now be under construction as I continue to refine the list, but this list has been working pretty well for me.
General Mulligan:
We still want our Flame Imp + Homunculus starts. We can keep Soul Infusions if we have a taunt or Doubling Imp to buff, buffing a Ghoul that we can play for free is also pretty good. We play aggressively early on and try to burst our opponent out in the late game.
____
Card Choices:
-
Spellbreaker: Currently still feels like this deck really needs the 2x Breakers to help push through damage.
Doomguard: Nice to have as a 1 of which gives additional burst which this deck needs since we cut Life Drinkers. I prefer 1 of since the discard can be awkward if you’re running 2x
Vulgar Homunculus: actually just the nuts. This on 2 in most situations makes up for the lack of Keleseth. It gives you so much more game vs other aggro decks and is the reason why you can compete with Keleseth on 2 in mirrors. This also can single handedly win you the game vs Odd Rogue if they can’t efficiently deal with it via Deadly Poison or SI/ Deckhand because you often get to heal it and gain so much tempo and time to just go face that even when they eventually win board, you’re already threatening lethal.
Doubling Imp: Even without buffs this is effectively a 4/4 for 3. With cards like Infusion, you can get some nutty draws.
Soul Infusion: A very solid card with big high roll potential. In this budget version it can allow you to play a T2 4/6 Homunculus or smooth out your T2 with one drop + Infusion on the one drop. Typically you want to hit your taunts or Doubling Imps with it.
____
Matchups:
Some general advice (more specific advice to come when the meta settles more)
Druid:
We want to have aggressive early starts with Flame Imps and Homunculus, getting a Soul Infusion off on a Homunculus or Flame Imp can be big since they won't always have a way to deal with it. Going into turns 4,5,6 we avoid developing small minions to play around Plague- these are the best turns to play a Fungalmancer or spend mana tapping and playing Soul Infusion. We want to try to finish the game by T10 before they can UI and stabilize. You should try to set up board states that beat UI on 10 which sometimes means going wide and risking they have a (second) Plague.
Warlock:
Usually the Zoo or Even variety. Against Zoo we always keep Vulgar Homunculus as that card can single-handedly win us the game vs Keleseth starts. We can keep Soulfires going second since we will need tempo swings to take over the game and preserve our board. The mirror is all about getting good value trades and preserving our board while killing theirs. Landing a Fungal Enchanter heal on multiple minions can be game winning.
For Even, we go for the biggest creatures we can find. We want to have resilient boards to Hellfire and Defile (usually means not playing a 1 health minion or sometimes holding a Happy Ghoul). A big Infusion'd minion early can carry us to victory. We usually need to hold Spellbreakers for Lich King or Sunfury'd targets, at that point in the game, we almost always need to go face, even if we risk losing to Hellfire lethals. We need to win ASAP since we have no longevity.
Rogue:
Vs most Rogue's other than Odd, we really value going face since they don't have ways to heal (outside of Kingsbane and Leeching). We often will use Soulfire to kill their minions to preserve what we have on board since those minions can push more than 4 damage over the course of 2 + turns.
Against Odd we want to mull for taunts and Soul Infusion to buff our taunts. Doubling Imp or Happy Ghoul turns can also provide the necessary tempo swing to win back board and thus the game. Watch out for Vilespine and Fungalmancer turns. At some point, we probably need to risk losing board to push the final points of damage.
Shaman:
Ike Shaman is a rough matchup since it's nearly impossible to play around all their cards. This is a matchup where we need to go hard early and hope they don't highroll Lightning Storms. When they draw their high end, we will usually lose to their value. But hey at least they don't have Healing Rains.
Even is a bit easier and more dependent on who went first. Tempo is king and thus going first and having the first one drop into two drop is huge. If you keep their board clear, they have a hard time coming back. They do have minions that swing tempo like Eel and Fire Ele so those are cards we need to play around.
...More to come soon! What matchups are you guys seeing a lot of? I'll cover the most popular ones.

Questions, comments, concerns addressed in the comments! Will be actively checking.
My good man, you have came and asked this question 2 months later. Blood Knight is not used anymore. Hell, I doubt this deck is as well.
I was on a long break from hearthstone and was thinking of getting back into it with some entry level decks. Does this deck still work as of today? Upto which rank is it good on an average?
I'm a noob F2P player that started playing a month ago. Struggled on the ladder with crap decks. I finally gathered enough resources to build a budget deck. After some research I decided to go with this one.
I went from rank 20 no stars to rank 18 3 stars in a day which is where I stand right now. My win rate is at 65% with this deck and I'm on a 5 game win streak right now. I managed to beat tier 1 decks along the way.
So yeah, I'd say this deck still works.
EDIT: After 3 days of about 10-15 games a day, I managed to reach rank 15 with this deck. Not bad for a budget deck.
Nice, I am playing it currently, will probably craft Prince Keleseth when I can.
Yeah, I wish i had the resources to craft Keleseth. It improves the deck by a ton if you manage to draw him early. Also chain gang is a huge upgrade over Homunculus. It gives you more protection and it's a great target for soul infusion and mushroom power.
Yes that's a good 2 drop to replace prince 2. But i think you need chain gang in this deck. It has way too much value to drop + it setup nicely into mushroom power
For non-Budget
- 2 Vulgar Homunculus
+ 1 Blood Knight
+ 1 Prince Keleseth
Yep! These are good swaps. I'd also add Leeroy over Rocketeer too. And potentially Mossy Horror/ Void Rippers over Spellbreakers.
This is exactly what I was thinking! :)
I Must Be Lost, Why Blood Knight? Are Paladins That Prevalent In The Meta? Just Coming Back After Many Moons Away From The Game
This deck was made pre Giggling Inventor nerf
Hey! I'm really close to having enough dust to make this deck. I was wondering whether the lightwardens were neccesary. I've played against zoo a lot before, and I've never actually seen the lightwardens pop off. Could I substitute in something like dire mole, argent squire, or elven archer? Thanks!
Also, I played most of those matches while running midrange hunter, and I always steamrolled. Any advice on how to beat hunter with this deck?
I think they are very strong since the times they do pop off, they can essentially win you the game, no other one drop really has that power. That said, if you really don't want to craft them, Squires or Dire Moles are fine too, Fire Fly can be good discard fodder etc.
The Mid- Range matchup is heavily tempo/ board control based, so usually whoever goes first has a huge advantage since the main way Hunter wins is by snowballing board. Clear minions when you get to chance to and play around key cards like Razormaw, Houndmaster, Unleash etc. If you win the board vs Mid Range you will usually win the game unless you get bursted down (you can play around those situations to an extent by holding back on hero power and minions that deal damage to you).
Returning player here. Picked the game back up after about a year off. This deck has rekindled my love for hearthstone. It's ridiculously powerful for how cheap it is, and it's really fun. Nicely done!
I love and hate this deck at the same time. I am pretty bad player, still learning how to play. With this deck I got for the first time to rank 11. My previous record was rank 14, and in this month I beat it to rank 11, and it's thanks to this deck. So for me it's a huge success. But then something just broke... I started losing almost every game, and got back to rank 14. In the end overall I won 26 games, lost 30. But don't get me wrong, I don't blame this deck, it's propably my poor tactics skill, and bad using of cards.
Should I put Blood Knight in this deck?
Yeah, Blood Knight feels like a really strong tech right now since there's so many Inventors, but if you don't see that card very often don't run it.
Biggest problem I am having with this deck after a weekend's worth of play is that the combos do not draw reliably enough to let up the early rounds. Not enough 1, 2, 3-cost cards to populate the early hands, and if you do get a good early board up, it's very vulnerable to Lightning Storm or another low-yield board clear. About 60% of the time, though, you just cannot mulligan the cards you need - you wind up instead with a hand full or 4s and 5s; not good at all when you're leading the play.
There's potential here, but so far the deck is too inconsistent to be a reliable winner.
Lightning storm is just naturally a very strong card against aggro. You either need to play around it more or go all-in more. There's ways to play around it, but sometimes you will just lose to it plain and simple.
I am a new player and I probably disenchanted too many possibly good cards to get this deck. This deck performs very well against so many heroes/decks. Except, I find it difficult to go against a hunter and win. Any tips?
