Just killed a warrior on turn 6 from 33 health with nothing but a Necrium Blade on board
Edit: thanks for the upvotes. Here's a small description:
The deck's idea is to assemble the whole combo through a single Elven Minstrel. That happens 100% of the time when you do not play the Cavern Shinyfinder, however i have found that card to add consistency rather than lower it.
The way you actually win is by having a 1 charge Necrium Blade equipped, then playing Kobold Illusionist -> attack > Backstab (or Razorpetal) the Illusionist and then burn the opponent. That's 4 mana for 2 copies of Malygos. Shadowsteps only help prepare a 2 mana Illusionist, leading to an even cheaper setup, that can allow us to burn even a high armor opponent. They are however not highly important and are probably the first cards to replace.
Cards like Bloodmage Thalnos, Vilespine Slayer or some taunts would help keep us alive, but would lead to us needing more time and more draw. Personally, i have not found that version of the deck as interesting or effective.
Edit #2: i've replaced the two Shadowsteps for one Sudden Betrayal and one Necrium Vial, as a test. The first is aimed at helping against aggro and the second against high armor decks (and slow draws).
As for Mulligan choices: Always keep one Elven Minstrel, as he gets us the full combo. Mulligan aggressively for him.
If you are certain the opponent is playing aggro, you can keep effective removal like Backstab or Sap. If you are certain they are slow, keep Preparation and Razorpetal Volley, as they speed things up for you.
Update #3:
I replaced the Shinyfinder with a second Sudden Betrayal, partially because the secret was performing well, partially because of a rage moment on a shinyfinder topdeck on the wrong turn.
I am personally getting close to a 50% winrate against zoo, which should be a very bad matchup. Don't play like a typical control deck. When the pressure is not too high, try to ignore it and setup your combo. You have to win first, not outlast them.
Thank everyone for the enormous feedback. This is something i never expected. I hope you keep having fun!
Final Edit:
I do not have the time to refine this deck as much as I would like. However as many of you have found, tuning it is not too hard, because there are a few simple guidelines to follow.
1. You should be very careful about adding more minions. Every one reduces the effectiveness of Elven Minstrel by a lot, and that card is the soul of the deck.
2. Mulligan almost everything for Elven Minstrel and go for the combo as soon as possible. If your opponent doesn't have lethal on board and you can set up the OtK, go for it. Don't play this as control because the rogue class does not have the tools for that.
3. Don't give up if your opponent is gaining a lot of armour. If you find the right spells you can burn through obscene amounts of it, as demonstrated in the videos.
And an important clarification. The deck has a somewhat weird approach to it. Contrary to what most players are used to, the aim is not to have a fair chance to win every game. Instead the deck aims at being extremely favoured when drawing properly, while accepting that there will be a few games you just concede. It is in a sense a coinflip deck, except the odds depend on the metagame, rather than always being 50-50.
Updated for Rastakhan: 2 Walk the Planks and one Cavern Shinyfinder in the place of two secrets and an Assassinate.
The deck is now much smoother and can actually be used for ranking up consistently.
Here's a video of the deck by Kiwiinbacon.
And here is the second video!
u might try Bloodmage Thalnos + Fan of Knives
Cheap Shot is quite strong as well
I have the same problem , the zoolock is the hardest opponent to play against , its harder than the odd paladin.
Good idea, is it crazy to try with Wild Pyromancer? With alot of cheap spells and Preparation + Fan of Knives it could work?
Anything that involves you playing more minions in the deck will vastly reduce its consistency. You'll end up pulling Wild Pyromancer, Bloodmage Thalnos or whatever other minion you stick in there via Elven Minstrel instead of what you need for the combo.
there will always be bad matchups, and for this deck, unfortunately, any aggro deck that can constantly apply pressure is a bad matchup. you could consider adding more stall cards, like doomsayer or something like that, but it makes the combo harder to pull off in the favorable matchups, so it depends on what you are facing , and what you are aiming to beat. if you aim to beat zoo, i would consider playing something else
aw yea didn't think about that... Too bad :/
Huge highroll deck. It seems similar to Malygos Big Priest.
Wincondition is insanely good when met, but reaching it is indeed a problem that threatens the placement of the deck in the meta.
I have watched the videos, read the comments and played 15 battles with this deck and only won twice. The cards come out backwards for me so often and it makes me so sad :(
Very nice deck, rank 14>12 with it.
Warrior with 30+armor and Inhumane savage aggro are it's only weakness. At least until people will start running weapon removal again...this deck will die a bit :(
Necrium vial is really vital in many matchups and also its a way to win when enemy destroys both of your weapons - still 3 malygoses, I'm enjoying this deck and I have to say that only pain in the *** is zoolock, but other then that I have pretty solid winrates. Also I reccommend trying evasion, mbe over assasination, against aggro decks it can win you the game taking one turn more:)
Perhaps some anti aggro techs like si 7?
are the two Preparation 's necessary?
Sometimes you win turn or two earlier if you have eviscerate or smthing and its a way to win with about 6 mana and also its a neccesary piece for necrium vial to work, so yeah. And also sometimes prep + vanish helps you a lot
Also, you don't always have the handspace or mana to cast Razorpetal Volley before you get your combo out on the board. Preparation allows you to get the razorpetals a turn earlier, which is important against aggro. Also in a pinch you can waste the prep on turn 4 to activate minstrel, which is usually worth it especially if you already have the razorpetals or Sinister Strike in hand.
I mentioned earlier on that I was trying WANTED! in place of a Necrium Blade. It's actually okay. One problem with the consitency of this deck is that if you don't draw and activate an Elven Minstrel, you can just take too long to get the combo pieces. When you go second it's easy to activate the minstrel with a coin. But when you go first, I'm often finding I'm having to do sub-optimal things like prep-minstrel, just to make sure I'm getting everything going. With WANTED! you can turn 4 wanted, and then usually turn 5 coin + minstrel (and hopefully use the spare mana to cast the Razorpetal Volley. It's also helpful against aggro decks, since it adds additional removal.
Of course the problem with wanted is that it's generally a bad card, and there are probably better options if what you want to do is stall aggro. Like add another evasion or a second sudden betrayal. It also comes at the cost of making the shiny-finder more important, as you will draw a necrium blade less often. Still, I'd be interested in hearing others experiences with deck tweaks.
Is this deck worth to craft Malygos for? I only miss him and the necro vials.
i think maly is always a worth craft. I dont know if this deck is good but you can play maly druid which is pretty good. Maly is classic so it wont rotate out.
If I were you — I wouldnt craft Malygosfor this deck only :)
Well I pulled Gloop as well and enjoy most of the druid decks. So it might be a card that will find a way in my two favorite classes.
there is a good chance it will go to the hall of fame so might be safe and @free@
