This is Icegirl's decklist shown on the most recent episode of Decktalk. The deck is a tempo deck that uses a great amount of deathrattle, has a great early and late game that can contest against much of what is in the meta.
Deck Guide by: IceGirl
Strategy:
This is a tempo midrange deck that has the ability to rush/ win the early game. This mage deck decides to control rush with early minions that trade well and work well with the rest of the removal package from mage.
Certain cards explained:
Bloodmage its back where he belongs in this deck a threat that acts as a soft taunt and draws you cards. If undertaker is out do not fear playing him turn two as a pump of getting an additional card draw if you lack him some have found a decent change is an additional secret. I would also mention haunted creeper to counter a rush players creeper and buff your undertaker.
Mad scientist: if he is in your opening hand your going to have a good day. The deck shines and intends to get secrets out for free using him (why the deck only runs 3 secrets) thus play him and get a nice advantage.
Fireball: This card is awesome because it can act as removal or finisher. If you are contesting the board feel free to use it as removal, otherwise send it to the face for the win.
Water Elemental: This card has caused quite abit of controversy since many feel there could be better 4 drops are cheap value cards in it’s place. Water Elemntal was put in place to counter the abuse of weapons: hunter , rouge, warrior and paladin depend on weapons for trades and board positions. One of my legendary teammates on Ace breakers had a match vs warrior where they were able to duplicate the water elemental and totally dominated him. Sometimes the best decks are ones that respond to where people are going in the meta and the water elemental achieves that. (not to mention a 3/6 can kill quit abit of rush junk.
Azure Drake: In the comments I have noticed many players ( my teammates included) have cut one for Loatheb I feel that is probably better and I personally just love card draw why I ran two. I honestly feel since rouge is about to be hit hard and hunter to, making spells cost 3 more for a turn might not be as important as it once was. Note I agree that its better in the current meta.
Loatheb: This card should be considered for one of the drakes because in the current meta where disrupting heavy spell damage matters it is great. However with priests on the rise a 4/4 that cant be targeted by death could matter more than previously especially since the nerfs are killing certain popular builds.
Mulligans: one should mulligan pretty hard for things that cost 3-under also toss back secrets this is a deck that doesn’t want them in hand ideally they only come out from a killed mad scientist.
Changes depending on what you face on ladder –
1. Polymorph cut for a blizzard or flame strike: being able to shut down / wipe a rushes board is critical if you weren’t able to trade / contest the early game and the polymorph won’t help you as much in that match up anyway.
2. Azure drake cut for a loatheb: explained above (highly recommended)
3. Cairneblood hoof cut for : another duplicate getting two more Loatheb/ sludge belcher could offer more way more value than a single Cairne Bloodhoof. The important thing is if you do make this change ensure when duplicate triggers you get something useful.
THE DECK IS GREAT! Swapped half of the cards... You guys...
Nice deck but 100% doesnt beat zoo as she states.
Fun deck! Went from 11 to 3 and still climbing. Nine days left to the end of season. Hopefully the hunter nerf will boost it even a bit further. As I don't have Thalnos I traded him for a Haunted Creeper.
Edit: Currently bouncing between 2 and 3. Can't quite make a breakthrough yet but hopeful for a lucky run.
This deck has been great! I made the following changes as recommended and so far so good:
- 1 Azure Drake, + 1 Loatheb, -1 Polymorth, +1 Flamestrike
I also don't have Bloodmage Thalnos, so substituted a Haunted Creeper for him.
If your having issues with aggro with this deck throw in senjin or argus. That usually messes up aggro if u get one on turn 4
11 games unranked: Zoo 3-1 Mage (lucky flamestrike), Shaman 0-2, TokenDru 1-0, Miracle 1-0, ControlWar 1-1, Priest 0-1. Useless vs hunters, useless vs any other agro. Too slow.
Having a good time playing this deck. It's one of the only mage decks that has a good matchup against almost everything, even hunter and miracle rogue. I couldn't resist naming it KappaField though ;P
What are some options for replacements if you don't have Bloodmage Thalnos? Thanks in advance!
maybe loatheb or another secret will do.
thanks! ill try both :)
no problem mate. another card you can consider is anything with deathrattle.
i'll give that a shot as well. wondering how crucial bloodmage is though?
imo, looking at the list, it isn't crucial. makes the curve better if you remove it actually.
I think the deck needs to cut the Azure Drakes for a Loatheb, you really want to be able to keep your board presence long enough to play Kel'Thuzad. Card is way too good not to run in pretty much everything, sadly.
I like to think of it as a viable/alternate version of DeathKlock by TotalBiscuit.
I switched Kel'Thuzad for a pyro as i often find myself burning them down so low but not able to do the final hits due to the taunts etc. Opinions? :)
not a bad choice, personal preference I would have to say on this one if you have the board controlled then Kel is amazing but if you lose that control then I can see pyro being a life saver.
Im a fan of Duplicate on Sludge Belcher Awesomeness always follows.
I had some good fun and a good win rate with this deck from 17 to 15 (short I know). I lost when I had bad opening hands, as others have commented, and once or twice to a hunter who had amazing draws and was able to burst me down.
I made one change: since I didn't have Bloodmage Thalnos I subbed in a Faceless Manipulator that seemed to work pretty well. It allowed me to copy a taunt when I needed it or to copy a second Kel'Thuzad once my opponent copied my first one and did a double Soulfire. Nice job!
Overall, fun deck. It's quick and fun to play. It does have the potential to seriously suffer bad opening hands. If you don't hit Mana Worm + Coin and/or Frost Bolt or an undertaker, the deck sits there until turn 3.
What's the strategy against Warrior? At the rate they stack armor, I can't get ahead in the early game, and their kill is soooo efficient, they just brush my late game threats aside.
Update: I'm using a second Flame Strike instead of Cairne Bloodhoof. I also don't like Azure Drake against the current meta (Face Hunter, Priest, and Zoolock, with a bit of Rogue and Control Warrior). The +1 spell damage hasn't made a difference, and the 4/4 body is just too small. I'm using Lotheb (preventing spells plus a 5/5 body is clutch) and Defender of Argus (for the extra taunt) instead. I hit a huge win streak, launching me from rank 11 to 8, but I still feel like I'm winning on the back of good opening hands.
