Mike Donais on Tournament Mode & More
Icy Veins has a chance to sit down with Mike Donais at gamescom to discuss Tournament Mode, The Grand Tournament, and more. It looks like tournament mode could be the next big feature. The full interview has been recapped below.
Quote from Mike Donais
- Tournament Mode was going to come before Tavern Brawl, but they decided Brawls would be enjoyed more.
- TGT was a way to provide us with tools to answer our complaints with the current meta game.
- Joust isn't a keyword because it ended up still needing other words on the card. "It didn't make sense".
- There are no immediate plans for spectator mode improvements.
- The Adventure then Expansion model we've seen isn't set in stone. We could easily see two adventures or expansions in a row.
- They're still looking at the new player experience. Making sure newbies fight other newbies, and releasing powerful common cards helps.
- No work is being done on an option to disable animations.
While I actually love the brawls myself I seriously doubt there'd be anywhere near as many complaints if tournament mode was released first.
Let me switch "Joust" with "Battlecry" and you'll see what they said.
Battlecry isn't a keyword because it ended up still needing other words on the card. "It didn't make sense".
Wait what? They came up with a dumb excuse to explain the dumb thing they did.
My line of thoughts exactly. Makes me also wonder why "Can't be targeted by spells or Hero power" isn't a key word since it doesn't need additional text.
I think what he means is that there are too many differences between Joust effects that making it a keyword was unreliable. Like, the Joust effect on Gadgetzan Jouster is totally different from the one on Tuskarr Jouster. They would need to elaborate what each effect did, so there would be a bunch of text anyway. Not to mention The Skeleton Knight, whose Joust effect is a Deathrattle, whereas all the others are Battlecry. So, would each of these cards need to have, "Battlecry: Joust - [yadda yadda]" just to accomodate one card? I mean, I could probably figure out a way to make that work, but I can see how it might come off as a bit confusing to players - especially new ones - so I get where Blizzard is coming from.
Gadgetzan Jouster
Joust: Gain +1/+1
Tuskarr Jouster
Joust: restore 7 health to your hero
So difficult!
The Skeleton Knight
Deathrattle: Joust to return this to your hand
Or hell leave Skellie knight unkeyworded, you'd still simplify every other joust card.
Basically higher cost abusive sergant
It seems permanent +2 have no value for you, huh?
