Ben Brode on Standard 2017 - If Things Won't Change Enough, We'll Tweak It
Recently there has been concern floating around the community with regards to the Standard format in 2017. Ben Brode took to Twitter to state that they would make changes if needed. This could include:
- Nerf cards like the nerfs for Standard 2016.
- Moving cards to the wild set.
Standard 2017 will see Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, and The League of Explorers sets moved to Wild only.
Quote from Ben BrodeReading feedback on Standard and whether things will change enough in 2017. If we think they won't, we'll make tweaks to ensure freshness. (Source)Not sure yet if that's nerfs like we did with Old Gods or something else like moving cards to wild like we did with Murk Eye. (Source)
Any chance of not letting League of Explorers expire in the next set rotation? Would be a shame to see it go so soon.
Ideally we will release awesome new cards, and Wild will also be awesome. (Source)As long as you stick with flawed idea of the classic set, things are always gonna be partially stagnant. :(
Not sure that's true. What if we nerfed every card in it, for example? (Source)
Was that some sort of threat as the last answer? Ben giving a partial backhanded answer there?
I mean, I know I'd progressively get tired of the community's endless... *ahem* constructive criticism...
IMO, the best idea is to rotate the base set once a year or two, but use just released cards from previous sets in the new base set. That way some Classic cards may move to Wild, while some Wild-only cards may return to Standard. No nerfs required. Returning players could still use their collection in Standard. Obviously Classic packs would leave the shop and new Standard packs would appear, containing all the rotated base cards.
They might want to change the arts for the new base cards, to motivate collectioners get the new cards, but still allow to use old ones instead.
Changing art is problematic, because it will make harder to identify cards in battlefield.
But I agree, that they may release new classic boosters (like Classic 2017) with new cards. If you have those cards from older sets, great, you can use them.
My biggest concern is the card pool which will always be underwhelming. Especially, with how many filler cards they recently been printing. I can already see wild format being more popular then standard in 2018 and beyond, simply because it will be much more interesting. Sure imbalanced, but this will correct itself by a large card pool. And can we really say standard is balanced? I dont think so.
without the damn thief priest it would be really enjoyable to play.
When the Expansion expires there should be ONE neutral card from it that joins the Classic set. For example:
I agree on all points except Malchezaar. the rest are strong but fair cards that shape the game, Malchezaar is not.
Strong but fair? Loatheb? Are you certain?
Honestly playing with and against loatheb felt like it added fair strategic depth to the decision making in the game. I'm sure not everyone agrees with that, but most people I've talked to definitely liked the card a lot, at the very least.
Totally agree... I admit that I'm biased towards the card and hate it with a passion, but objectively 5/5 for 5 mana with that Battlecry is insane.... We certainly need a card to keep things like Worgen in check but Loatheb in its current state it's a bit too much....
nerf loatheb to a 4/5 so the stats are (above) average
Going to miss LOE...
This is basically why Wild will be a much superior format over time Standard will keep hitting brick walls like this with limited room for creativity. Standard in large will always have the same card pool size while Wild format keeps growing broader and broader, eventually what will have down the road is what we have now with everyone netdecking the same 10 decks with half of those making up 90% of what you encounter this currently being (Aggro Shaman, Aggro/Control Warrior, Zoo, Yogg Druid). As for wild the creative ceiling will have a multiplier effect which will result in a Heinz 52 experience no two decks will be the exact same which will lead to a much better playing experience overall. As momentum grows Wild will become the preferred format as time passes.
Not to much mention as more cards cycle out the more people are gonna want to revisit them, there is a mountain of reasons why it's inevitable.
I'd love to see some more of the stable [read: fair and enjoyably dynamic] cards from expansions be moved to the base set. Stuff that will keep standard interesting for years to come instead of being almost completely the same of a base year after year.
but..but..but..heal has to be weak bc its the theme of priest, so no healbot for you *grabs his bag of money and runs away*
the answer is damn simple: no money for blizzard. they lose money by nerfig cards and gain money by creating new ones, even more money for desireable rares, epics and legendary. that is why we get stupid reprints of the classic set as common and almost every new set has one "cheap" deck and all other decks need at least 2 epics or a card from the 3 or 4th wing.
and ofc its just a bug that we only get 40g quest before the release of karazham.
hearthstone could be so fun if they start nerfing if they really need to, like with chrismas tree or now with shaman, dragon warrior, yoloron or priest on wild. or if they would nerf and buff a card every month or even two weeks and call it another gamemode and see how it works out and transfer the best changes every 3 month over to standard. or raise the hp up to 40 so control decks become better and they have more designspace. or let us create custom game modes. or just stop the powercreep madness and creat new cool effects.
what i would do for the new season: set the hp to 35, redo the classic set with old ´cards like lightbomb, dublicate, echo, deathlord, mad scientist(3mana), healbot and get rid of all vanilla cards. non of them is played ever (the age of inno+yeti is over and ok there is bog creeper but he has at least taunt), rethink th buffs and nerfes some cards would be fair again like commander, change the rarities of adventure cards for arena and create a new set with many legendaries so you could use your dust to creat some you want
Even if Reno Jackson won't be brought back, it would be great if Antique Healbot could be moved to the classic set. Love that little mech.
Sadly this would never happen. Anyways, nerf hype :D
Wild Will be Wild
Move Call of the Wild to wild because it's so wild. Wild wild wild.
