I think this deck is not necessarily JUST a tempo deck. It does well in being control-ish as well. I think that is why I really love playing it. We have ways to recover and if played correctly don't run out of juice that quick. Though this might requires some knowledge of the meta and your deck. I'm aiming at early choices that you make with Historian and Operative. Also choices when to Duskbreaker highly influences your later turns. I would label this deck more as a value deck than as a tempo deck.
in 80% of the games you won't be playing Gul'dan, but he actually is a life saver and can turn games that were lost around again in your favor. Especially in priest/control match-ups. In the wild version i cut 1 Power Overwhelming for him. In the standard version I would cut 1 Kobold Librarian. Kobold Librarian isn't really core anyway.
TLDR: Gul'dan can make big swings into your favor, but he is not essential to play zoolock.

If you don't have Netherspite Historian, but you really want to play dragon/big spell priest, then I suggest playing it in Wild.
Wild has Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent and Blackwing Corruptor.
