Few people complain about the lack of Paladins on the standard ladder, they've had enough of seeing a 6 mana card pulling out the value of sometimes 6 cards and 11 mana. Because it felt like cheating and.... it was. So Blizzard as always listened to the people by making sure that not only Secret Paladin was uncompetitive in ladder but the entire class. Post GvG Paladin was an awkward class that tried to buff lesser minions in the early game and nerf immediate threats to hold off the opponent, heal in the midgame, and then use heavy minions to overpower in the late game. Come GvG and paladin received 2 cards that allowed it to become a top tier midrange deck. Shielded mini-bot and muster for battle.
These two cards allowed the Paladin class to achieve enough of a board presence in the early for buffs from both spells like blessing of kings and minions like defender of argus to land their full value. That's all it took. Cards like Quarter master and cog hammer just made it more unfair, but the main bread and butter that made Paladin a fun and competitive midrange deck was a solid 2 drop and a 3 mana spell that gave you difficult to remove board presence.
But let's talk about the big wins for Paladin in WOTG. (clears throat) ...... N'zoth. Turns out having the ability to play Tyrion twice in one game is pretty good. But seriously we got a one drop that's garbage if it's not played on turn one and a 3 mana "give minions with one health Divine Sheild" which is only good (not great) if you put very specific objectively bad cards in your deck.
So will the next expansion give Paladin its midrange deck, I don't think so. I think Blizzard has recognized that giving people the ability to play different play styles like control, midrange and aggro to one class is bad for business. As you use some obvious core cards to create every deck within a class no matter what variant it is (like all mages run frost bolt and all warlocks run power overwhelming), so basically if you can't use the same card multiple times to make different deck variants you have to get all the cards for another class in order to play that different variant. I hope I'm dead wrong. This game is best when every class is feared and you never know what deck they're playing. As of now, the meta is pretty boring I can't believe how quickly i got board of seeing yogg saron hex itself and play 6 board wipes. And by the way the only class that's successfully pulling of a tempo and control deck right now is warrior and black rock mountain is about to be shifted out making dragon warrior impossible. Thaaaaaks for reading my rant internet.
Midrange pally lost 15 cards in standard. That's quite dreadful.
I don't agree that selfless hero is garbage and especially not later in the game. I would actually make the argument that for a 1 mana drop it's quite good value later in the game. It's just the follow up to that 1 drop that's miserable
The paladin hero power can easily snowball out of control. So I think that's why they are reluctant to give us good minions.
I'm still quite happy about getting rid of the secret pally as it was though.
But for the love of the holy light. give us a 2 drop
I like your analysis, but your trolling the troll answers, that's the best part of this thread :)
I would nice for Pally to have a better spell to summon minions that the 5-for-fighting spell. Maybe something a bit less OP than Muster for Battle but same idea. Maybe 2 minions with divine shield a conditional, dual effect spell like Warrior has.
That said, the game is never as bad as most salty trolls claim it is. Blizzard does a fantastic job of making major shifts to keep the game as fresh as you can expect.
Well aggro paladin still kinda works I used an aggro secret paladin in standard to some success and N'zoth paladin.. well it's fine for tournaments.. maybe
I agree paladin needs desesperately a 2 and 3 drops maybe we will see tommorow? who knows..
