Yo guys, you may be doing this already, but have you considered banning the users instead of individual posts? Maybe even introduce a buffer time between when a user can create their account and make a post?
I don't understand why you guys don't just add a time buffer so a single user can't create a new thread right after they've already done one. Even normal users shouldn't have that ability IMO (creating new threads in succession so quickly).

Because because this does not solve anything. They just make more bots so each bot posts 1 instead of x. It does not impact them at all.
our filter hit every post that just showed up, it's just being a little to slow arm, getting that updated is the real solution! Hopefully very very soon.
What I wonder is, who are the people who respond to these adds? Is there really a market for black magic love specialist on hearthpwn?
The ads don't get attention directly on hearthpwn, google search terms and internet presence increase the scam's illusion of prevalence to others searching google for 'love advice'.
That filter also deletes flavorful discussion topics and deck creations. Why just treat the bot-disease with a filter instead of erasing the root problem altogether and rather easily at that, with the implementation of an easy human verification during registration. The fear that a willing user doesn't pull through because of that is completely irrational and unfounded.
So, captcha doesn't work, cuz it can be solved automatically with neuronetworks and stuff. So, make 10 minutes delay between thread creation doesn't work, cuz they can create many accounts.
But anyways, why not add those two? Both 10 minutes between posts and captcha on registration. This way you won't bother users by captcha (you reg only once) and won't create any major problem, but make it MUCH harder for spammers.
It's all about how much time they spend to succesfully setup the spamming, it will increase this time by a huge margin.

As Flux said on the first page of this thread:
I'd also like to note once again that we're not dealing with bots here, but humans. So although some bots may be thwarted by captchas (not all are), humans can still read them which means you're just going to see spam anyway. This also ends up pissing off new users to the site, thus increasing the barrier of entry.
I'll also repeat what I said. Account restrictions do not work. They simply will get around them by making more accounts, making posts undead of threads, you name it.
we prob want this fixed even more than you guys! So if the fix was Actully that easy, we would already be doing it. The improvement plans we have should seriously help.
How about working with upvotes? Creating a new thread is only possible when you received let's say 10 upvotes from users that already have at least 10 upvotes. Only the upvotes counts, not the downvotes in the card/deck section.
Naturally even there can be a workaround, but then they would at least need 10 upvotes. Also if they have accounts that have already 10 upvotes and give always the spammer the upvotes, you could see it and close them too. This would give them more work to spam here.

It's already mentioned above that they will just spam with answers to the existing threads.
Why not at least try the human verification during sign up? Monitor it for a week or two and see how well it works.
because we have tried it on other sites, it does not work, we already know and have tried. We also use curse auth, which means any account made on any curse site can use their account on any other site.
As someone who is studying to become an astrobiologist, the only spambot that seriously gets on my nerves is the 'astrologer'. Holy shit, that word alone just shaves a year off my life whenever I see it.
Also, looking through the recent posts, I think that Hearthpwn's system simply needs either time or modification. Recent site changes have probably introduced new lapses in programming for spammers to exploit.

tbh, they should implement a stronger filter around 9PM EST, just before the indian subcontinent wakes up. I only say that because the worst ones are clearly in india.... +91 cc
You better buy some telomeres.... I'd have lost 50 years if that were true ;)
Another question: why can one anyway open multiple threads at once? Opening a thread is ok, but why not implement a cooldown of 10 minutes to open another thread? Don't think that beside Staff needs to open multiple threads at once, so 10 minutes between opening a thread would at least stop the spam of the whole page with the whole astrologer/babaji-scam

How can one bot make three dozen threads in 20 minutes and not get caught?

At least we can do "Moderator's Best Friend" achievement. Kappa
You should hire or consult Matt Cutts from Google (or someone from his team). He's the reason my GMail has very little to no spam in your inbox.
I know it's a tough problem, good luck!
