I know fans of the series are up in arms about the recent changes coming in with the blessing that is a console core installation of PokeMon. That being said, here's my take on things.
The game looks gorgeous and I'm incredibly excited to enjoy both tall grass and wandering encounters. I think both means of engaging wild PokéMon have a place in the main series and offer a better overall experience regarding immersion (much more than past titles).
The new mechanic - Dynamax - is a silly gimmick that forgoes the complexity and openness that Mega Evolution brought in X/Y. Mega PokéMon were and still are the best mechanic to enter the series, transforming average or even "bad" monsters to competitive tanks and sweepers. I mean, it made Beedrill a terrifying force to be reckoned with! Even Z-moves were more inventive, although they catered to the competitive tournament aspect of the game more than Megas ever did imo. Dynamax fails to bring anything unique to the series other than the opportunity to engage in raid battles (which didn't need Dynamax to come to fruition). They're just big, which means they're stronger. How revolutionary. Kappa
The absence of the National Dex feels very bad to a lifetime fan and player such as myself, but I wouldn't skip this game for it. The National Dex is something I've worked very hard on completing in every generation (I'm currently only missing a couple event legendaries like Marshadow!) and it feels strange and wrong to think of my hard-trained and collected PokéMon being cherry-picked for admission into the new generation. That being said, I do not think this will ruin the game. Nintendo and GameFreak could always see their fan base calling out for a full National Dex and bring the new character models in with a patch (why not exclude the non-Galar PokéMon from Dynamax effects to save space and development time?), but I can't say I 100% expect it. Given the increasing file size of each PokéMon and the sheer volume of monsters we now have, it's entirely reasonable for Nintendo to consider limiting how many PokéMon appear in each game. I want the National Dex as badly as the next trainer, but I'm not going to roast Nintendo and GameFreak for a Dex we have no information on regarding its size. Chill out and let's get some more information before we all flip our lids.
The new PokéMon designs look fantastic and I can't wait to see the rest (yes, even the moronic-looking Impidimp is fine imo. Just like in nature, not every creature is going to thrill, impress, or draw you in to love it, and that's fine).
I hope this generation gives us some real old-school challenges like Whitney's Miltank from Gold/Silver, something that just utterly steamrolls you the first time and makes you reconsider your team and battle plan. The games have felt very easy in the story with the Battle Trees and the like suddenly ramping up in difficulty.
What did you think?

I've played at least one game from every generation, but I think it's really weird that people care -- like, at all -- about the first three bullet points. The last two are just, yeah, obvs.

Well, I loved Mega Evolution and found Z-moves just ok, but with so many options for more megas to explore, they decided to go the route of Clifford the Big Red Dog for PokéMon. I was disappointed when they not only decided to stop working on the mega mechanic that I love, but removed it from the game altogether. Also, I really like how the game looks and I enjoy when games make some effort to help suspend your sense of reality in their world. Not to mention I tend to like to collect things and after generations of adding to that collection, now I'm told that only some or most (we don't know yet) of that collection will get use in the newest game.
It's just because people like these things so much that they care.
I'm glad you agree with some of my points, though!

I'll go point by point in my answer so it's easier to read:
The game does look beautiful and the fact that they're going with the Let's go formula of showing the wild mons on real time is fantastic, to me that was arguably the key factor that made Let's go appealing and would actually love if after the battle and weakening the pokemon the whole throwing the pokeball moment was like let's go so you could actually feel more immersed.
Dynamax just seems retarded to me. Megas are so cool and Z-moves are spicy (Broken in a lot of cases tho) but Dynamax just seems like a stupid mechanic that looks stupid, specially with the fact that there won't be Megas OR Z-moves. I really hope that what they really meant is that there'll be no Megas or Z-moves on the main game but you can eventually access them on the Post-Game or through events/gifts on the future (Like with megas on sun and moon). This mechanic just looks to me like they thought well bigger is better so let's make every pokemon huge and give them stronger movers for 3 turns that have some side effects.
About the national dex I have mixed feelings. It sucks to not be able to access some of your favorite mons but I'm mainly a competitive player so it may not be so bad. By competitive I mean Smogon, I couldn't care less about VGC or Battlespot, so having less of the super broken mons we have nowdays (Like Tapu Lele or Ash Greninja for example) seems super refreshing and it'll allow some mons that would never see the light of day to actually see play and become somewhat relevant. On the other hand as I pretty much exclusively play on Showdown I read somewhere that they'll implement a gen 8 ladder that has every single pokemon available even if that's impossible on the actual game so even if I wanted to use the other stuff it's still fine for me.
Yeah the new pokemons are cool indeed, they're looking like actual pokemons, cause last gen we kinda went the digimon, filled with 7k layers of shit and colors and bullshit that just doesn't look organic route (Looking at your Ultra Necrozma). I like Impidimp and Grookey the most from what we have seen.
I really hope they would make games more difficult again, the last 2 gens were made for babies for real. I know pokemon obviously has a huge kids fan base and it's super appealing for them but Nintendo and Gamefreak are just forgetting about the Older and/or Hardcore players, XY and Sun/Moon felt like they were taking me by the hand the entire game. I'll keep saying that there should be a hard mode put into the game, just keep the easy mode as a default and give us the choice to pick the harder on the settings or something. You know trainers either having more pokemon or them being higher level and having better movesets could be really cool. Also for the love of everything that's sacred, let us skip all the tutorial slow bullshit that we already know and have known and done for literal years already, I don't want to learn how to catch a pokemon for the 700 time for fuck sake, I already know how the Pokecenter looks like and that you can but goodies like Potions and Balls on it. Don't assume everyone is a new player that has no clue about the game Gamefreak! I understand that there ARE new players and even small kids that never even heard about Pokemon before so they need this kind of tutorials but my dude, I've been playing this franchise for 22 years now so I think I fucking know how to weaken a wild pokemon and then throw a pokeball so it's easier to capture and I think I also know how a pokecenter looks and how to use it. Just have an option to skip these dumb tutorials please, that would improve the game experience by a lot. By far the worst part of any pokemon game is how slow it is to start and how slow the first like hour/ 2 hours are, and this has become worse in the last few generation, they have the need to just hold your hand the entire game, it's sickening honestly.
Thanks for the bump, NickHusky! I forgot this was here.
Hindsight and one half of the DLC live:
The game still looks great and Isle of Armor is what all the wild areas should look like - dynamic, lush, varied.
D/GMax still feels like a silly gimmick compared to the practical applications of mega evolution and Z-moves. GMax is just the appearance of mega evolution with the practical application of 3 turns of Z-moves. DMax is just GMax without the new visuals GMax provides. I've found I enjoy battling without using Max forms when I can help it (even though I'll admit I love some of the GMax designs).
The lack of a pure and full national dex at this point doesn't feel as bad as I thought it would. It definitely doesn't take away from the game itself, just my own personal attachment to Mons I've trained for literal generations of the series now. That there are so few not included helps a lot. I think it's fine they didn't let everything come into SwSh.
The new Pokemon are great. Period.
The story isn't particularly hard... at all. Leon is your greatest challenge, but a well-rounded team can overcome him and his OP GMax Charizard. It helps that the AI is predictable. Nothing like Whitney or Cynthia, but a good effort. Battle Tower is a lot of fun, even if any solid all-out offense team can push to Masterball Tier with sheer brute force. Once you get there, it loses its luster, then you're left with PvP, which is its own animal.
Points not mentioned previously:
HOME is a wonderful replacement to Bank and as they streamline it, it only gets better. I mean, they FINALLY killed impossible trade requests! I know that's not a HOME feature, but it came along with it after a few months live and it's really cleared up one of the biggest gripes the community had going.
The additional clothing and style options on the avatars has been a blast and big improvement that came in with the Isle of Armor DLC. I didn't expect to love this, but it offered much better outfits and beauty options!
The Rotobike is a genius means of addressing travel that is seamless, lending to the enjoyment of travelling the wild areas on your Rotobike.
The Diglet hunt is not worth it after 100. The final Pokemon is an Alolan Diglet, which is a lot of work for bragging rights and a Pokemon you probably already have.

I dont know much about the actual game storywise/casual play, but from what I have heard from friends, this is the easiest game ever, barely a graphic improvement from last gen, very colourful game but some bugs (like most games these days) and almost no shadows ingame. This game programming has been the worst since the programmers were inexperienced, duplicating THOUSANDS of files making the actual game be x2 its intended size.
DIN A4 max is actually busted/broken beyond limits, Zmoves & mega evos were broken but understandable to break some stalls, but Dianamax is actually 2x base hp + 3 Z moves combined + many perks (immune to flinch, roar, etc), which turns a dinamaxed poemon into an unstopable train with no brakes.
From the competitive aspect, that I actually play at showdown, this is one of the worst games ever, maybe as bad as gen 5 sand meta.
This is the first time a pokemon game has less pokemons than the last, they actualy cut the number of pokemons from 800+ to half. They also cut items and actual pokemon movements/attacks. Which makes the combats very predictable.
Good points: New attacks, items and abilities which is always nice, mostly from hackmons meta. Although any other pokemon game also did that.
I think that Pokemon should destroy enemies without any obstacles. Pokemon is a personality that can give the necessary knowledge to the enemy who didn't want to continue the battle. Pokemon is a Samurai that didn't want to kill the enemy by the sword, and only with the speech. Actually, I'm a fan of the Pokemon and from what I can tell, I kinda like to play in the Pokemon video games. Such video games can give me a lot of pleasure because they are quite interesting to play, and I mean the arcade plot of the video game. Sometimes I play in the classic Pokemon video games, like that series that was released on the Nintendo DS. I play in them using the emulator and the ROM https://romsie.com/pokemon-white-version-nintendo-ds-rom that can be downloaded for free!! This is a thing that makes me more interested in video games. I'm kinda new in the classic video games, so I want to learn more about the culture of them..
