This season in Europe server I've been playing an unprecedented amount of mages. I mean it feels like everyone and their dog is playing some form of Mage right now. I'd even go to say I've faced 80% Mage decks in the last 20 games rank 16-12.
The majority have been tempo mages but not by much. I've also seen Freeze, grinder and even a Malygod Mage in some numbers.
I'm not complaining. I've been playing Patron Warrior with a Kezan Mystic teched in and have a good win rate against them.
Have you guys been experiencing this also? Why do you think Mage has become so popular? I play a lot of arena and I expect that there but ladder is Mage crazy right now and not a hunter in sight :0
Yup, so am I. I've been playing my Hunter deck, Handlock and Freeze Mage this season and about 1/3 of all my opponents are Mages. I guess it's a fun, versatile class (Tempo, Mech, Grinder, Freeze, Giant) to play? Time to unleash the Kezans I guess :p
20 games isn't a great sample size. I'd rather face Mages all day than Patron Warrior anyway. I'm facing a mixed bag of Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Shaman! and Hunter.

20 Games is a fairly significant amount of time. On average a match lasts about 12 minutes. That's about 4 hours of playtime. I don't know about you, but between Sleep, Work, Commute, Eating, & Errands...I'm lucky if I get 4 hours of gaming time.
One thing I think in Mage's favor is that the sheer diversity in playable decktypes makes it a challenge to mulligan against them. Don't forgot Mech Mages as well!

Same problem exists with warlocks. How do you mulligan when there are 3 viable deck archtypes (Hand, Zoo, Demon). I'm happy that warlock players have been able to have such diversity since beta, but I really wish that the same could be said about the rest of the classes.

I didn't say anything about time. I said 20 games ... it's not a large enough sample size to say suddenly that Mage is rampant. If I play 20 games today, and don't meet a Mage, does that counter your stats in the overall scheme of things? Nope. 20 games could be over a few hours or a few days, it's still 20 games btw ... I don't need to know your life story, lol
I can echo the sentiment so far in the US. Played 25 games last night from rank 18-15 and 16 were against various Mages, most being tempo Flamewaker types. I'm not complaining as I am playing a dragon tempo priest with a solid early game that eats it up but they are dominating at least the high ranks right now.
Mage is the class with some of the best tools in the game - hard removal, crazy AOE, powerful secrets, strong burst damage, Water Elemental & Snowchugger, etc (which is why it's widely considered the best Arena class). That means Mage gets used a lot when you're coming into a meta that's in upheaval and want to cover all your bases.
Plus, Flamewaker is not only strong AF but it's also just a fun card to play with. Tempo Mage was good before, now it's extremely good.
One other reason is that - if played correctly - Tempo Mage destroys Grim Patron Warrior. GP just can't keep up with the tempo and is within Fireball range before they can play their combo. Tech in a Skillstrike on top of that and it's just embarrassing. Anything that has a good matchup vs GP is going to see a lot of play right now.
I'm was never implying 20 games was a large sample size. The reason for this thread was to see if others had experienced playing many mages like I have.

How to become ∞ at arena: - practice, practice, win, dominate, profit.
Well, After a good session last night ... where I ended up in the same position as I began .... *grumble* ... I can say i did face a few Mages, but Warlock and Warrior dominated. Man, I really hate Warrior right now! Grrrr! I'm going to try some demonlock myself for a change tonight. And who knows, maybe some wake-Mage. As it is fun.
Yeah, Hunter too. I don't even notice how many of those anymore, as they don't bother me. The odd time a facetard version gets the better of me but I can usually deal with them.

20K G's saved up every new expansion.
yep, a lot more mages than usual this season, much more than hunter, that used to be what i saw more in the first days of laddering.

Have a great deck that's really, really cheap? Help the new players out
