I just don't see the value of the egg when compared to the Nerubian egg or just in general. In most cases you are going to be getting a 2/1 for 1 mana and that is it. That isn't good value especially when it is delayed. There a Clockwork or leper gnome is far superior as they are both 2/1's you can use immediately and they have other benefits (2 dmg or a spare part). I guess there is a little bit of value in the Dragon Egg saving you 2+ damage from opponent attacking it instead of your face so maybe you could call it a 2/1 and 2 armor but I don't think that is really valuable in a zoo or aggro style deck.
To get real value out of the Dragon egg you need to get 2 whelps from it and your opponent isn't going to do that for you in almost all cases. A warrior or druid might end up having to do that with swipe or whirlwind but they are more likely to have killed it with a single hit first and then cleaned up the drake with the swipe or whirlwind. To get the value out of it you really need to be able to trigger it yourself in a reasonable manner which is why I see it fitting into a warrior deck the best.
In Zoo the Nerubian Egg works because all you have to do to get the full value out of it is kill it. For zoo, it is much easier to kill a nerubian egg than it is to do one damage to a Dragon egg twice. The Nerubian egg is also a good deterrent against board wipes.
Trying to buff it up to spawn lots of whelps sounds good but it's not going to be easy to do and a bunch of 2/1's is still vulnerable to board clear. The sword of justice combo sounds interesting but it's 3 mana for the sword and 1 for the egg so the earliest you could do that combo would be turn 4 without the coin and you wouldn't be able to attack until turn 5. At that point most decks won't have a bunch of 1/x creatures for you to run the egg into and would obviously want to try to kill it with any 3 attack minion on their turn to limit the number of whelps you get.
This card is bad. Maybe with a "Dragon" Tag ok, but not like this. Even if this Egg gets buffed and spawns many 2/1.. the board gets cleared with a single Fan of Knives. Actually, everykind of board clear is enough.. it's not worth to waste 2 slots for this card.
I think this card is better than the 2/1 it will become in most scenarios. It is something that the opponent will need to clear before you can buff it or get extra value. So usually it soaks up at least 3 damage and deals 2 damage. Not bad for a one drop. It also has potential to do more.
1 mana
Soak 3+ damage
Deal 2 damage min.
Potentially deal 4 or more if buffed, pinged, etc.
Not something for every deck, but I think this could see play.
So I think I might have found a good comparison for this card: Argent Squire.
First looking at the differences. Squire doesn't have good synergy with Cruel Taskmaster and is much weaker vs Knife juggler pings. On its own the Squire's 1 attack means it can handle itself without support, can trade into 2 Leper Gnomes, and it has arguably better support with buff spells.
Now look at all the situations where your opponent is trying to deal with the egg. If a 2/2 or 3/2 pops the egg or Squire's shield you are left with a very similar outcome, the remaining 1/1 or 2/1 will be able to finish off the opponent's minion. If drawn later in the game they have a very similar outcome to opponent's AoE. And Argent Squire's shield can be pinged by 1 damage hero powers, and the Egg's whelp can be pinged by 1 damage hero powers.
So in most realistic situations where you aren't producing a whelp factory, I see the 2 cards as serving a similar function which is to possibly slow down aggro a bit or put a cheap, somewhat sticky minion on the board for buffs like Abusive Sergeant, Shattered Sun, Flametongue etc. It's tough to say whether or not something like that will be relevant in the upcoming meta.

So, this 1 drop is bad because it's weak vs aoe huh? Just...just think about that for a second. Does it sound as ridiculous to you as it does to me? I hope so. /facepalm

Yes it is. because you need time to utilize this card and once you are at a point to get value, most opponents have some kind of AoE ready. A Leper Gnome or any other 1 drop can at least trade the next turn/ deal some damage.
It might be the cheapest dragon, and if you need to hold a dragon to other combos and mechanics just hang on to it I guess. I don't think this is intended to be played but rather just to fulfil that requirement.

There is just one small problem: It isn't a dragon.
In constructed, it fails a hard truth : Mage and Druid can deal with it for (almost) free. I see little future, for this very reason that it's a completely dead card 22% of games
You know hero power costs 2 mana right ? You know 1 damage for 2 mana is bad right ? You know 2 mana on early game is huge right ?
I'm unclear how their hero power stops this thing. If they use their hero power on the egg they just spent 2 mana to give you a 2/1 whelp.

I won't argue that an AoE can clear both welps if for whatever reason you have both out on the board. That is obvious, what this card is good at is early stickyness. Turn one this guy, or with coin this guy and a leper gnome. Now the same AoE clear wont clear the board, it'll simply kill the gnome and give me another 2/1 to take it's place with egg just sitting there ready to poop out another 2/1 (assuming fan of knives is the clear as you suggested).
This card is less about aggro and more about sustaining or controlling board state with not all that easy to get rid of critters. I think it's pretty descent. Not "wtfOPqq" good, just descent. I think this card won't be found in every deck, it's no Dr. Boom afterall. But I think it will be found in a few decks that can take advantage of it's ability to poop out critters for dmg (priest for example.)
I just think it's ridiculous to call a 1 drop bad because it's weak vs aoe. Not only does that apply to pretty much every 1 drop in the game, this is probably the best choice to help counter aoe when it comes to 1 drops, since it's leaving a body behind.
Sure, the 2/1 whelps will die to an aoe. Every 2/1 in the game dies to an aoe. But if my opponent is wasting an aoe to clear my board of egg spawned whelps, this is a win for me. I want my opponent to waste their aoe on my 1 drop! Why wouldn't I? When people make it sound like that would be a bad thing, it makes me think they're either very new to the game or very bad at it.
It looks really cool, but I don't think it's threatening enough to use a card slot for. Also, outside of mage, it requires some kind of combo to get anything out of it

Favorite class: keeping all 9 of them equal in level.
With mage HP - could nearly guarantee 2 pops (or draw out a silence).
That's 5 mana for two 2/1s... That sucks!
I think it should have had 3 HP to make it a "maybe" in some decks
Originally I was thinking Mage pinging their own egg would be a bad play. It does cost a lot of mana and is not efficient.
But think of it compared to other Hero powers. For 1 mana, Mage can essentially transform their hero power into a better Paladin hero power for 2 turns or until it's destroyed.
Hero Powers aren't mana efficient, but they do help fill out your curve, and give you options, and for Mage they can get Paladins hero power but even better, spawning 2/1s. Not that bad of a deal.
Playing egg on turn 1 for mage, means for turn 2 and 3, it's like their hero power is "Choose one: Deal 1 damage OR Summon a 2/1 Whelp." Options are good, that's why card draw is so strong, gives you more options.
Obviously there are times when a Paladin summoning a SHR is the best play they have. There will be times when Mage pinging the egg for a Whelp would be the best play, even though it's mana inefficient.
Seems pretty cool! Not sure if it would be that good though, can be silenced, or it will be destroyed in one turn leaving you with a weak 2/1. I think it´s too slow and weak, but maybe if you get it in the starter hand it can be good.
You are joking right?!...for one mana, if it does any of that ( eat a silence, require 2 turns to kill) you already gained value,
I don't know why everyone is down on this card its effectively an alternative to zombie chow. Even if you only get 1 whelp from it your opponent had to deal 2 damage and then 1 damage to clear the whelp, that 2/3 worth of stats. Difference is this is slower while zombie chow heals your opponent.
Of course the advantage to this card is that your opponent may leave it alone giving you a sticky minion for buffs/shadowflames etc. In addition if you pull of the combo this card becomes insane. Violet teacher is considered playable and that only makes 1/1 minions.
I agree that this would be most effective in Priest and warrior but of course we need to see the rest of the card.
While I agree that people might be incorrectly down on this card, the comparison to Zombie Chow is flawed. What makes Zombie Chow so strong isn't just absorbing 3 damage in the early game, but that it deals 2 damage and then survives to attack again (although not against 3/2s obviously, and even that is a fine trade). The Dragon Egg, once popped, will die after any hit so it does not have 2 for 1 potential against aggro without any outside buffs. And of course, you may be out of luck if you don't draw an activator on turn 2 because your opponent can choose to ignore the Egg. If your opponent does fear a buff it can dispatch the first half of the egg without damaging their minions, and then efficiently take out the 2/1 with a free trade or hero power ping etc.

Why is this card not a dragon?
The same reason why veterinarians can happily eat eggs.
