Bolvar is a million times better than the Leviathan! Bolvas has an unique ability which can be useful in different ways. Leviathan however is always bad because it its IMPOSSIBLE to count on it. Further more it can and will most likely be a downswing.
Mage is frigging low tier of all classes and how do you fix it? Release this basic card. If mages want cards like this, we´d use War Golems for god sake...
We'll have to call Yong Woo on this unless there really is a new great-but-somehow-noone-sees-it-yet Mage archetype. So far it's a nail in the coffin, a welcoming gift to the second round of Mage being bottom-tier class.
If I get one of these in a pack I hope it is golden. Not because it looks cool and I would use it. Because I could disenchant it and make any other legendary! lols. hahahahahahahaha
This and Bolvar are disappointing. At least Bolvar might have some potential with the other cards.
Also if I ever saw this card I never ever would have thought mage. It just doesn't connect for me. No personality whatsoever.
Are all the cards out now? I keep hoping something else is going to add to this to make sense. However I am pretty sure I am just wishing. This card seems really bad and like some of the others I would be thrilled if I could be shown otherwise.
As many class cards try to fill the gaps in class design (a healing minion for Shaman, a sort-of-hard-removal spell for Druid), I believe Flame Leviathan is meant to achieve the same goal. Mage has lots of high-cost spells and is often limited by mana. There are no minions like Fire Elemental or Keeper of the Grove in Mage, so you either deal with the opponent's board or develop yours, not both at the same time.
AOE that has no mana cost can be a huge tempo swing and is exactly what Mage needs (along with card draw and spellpower, but we get Echo of Medivh and Soot Spewer for this). However Flame Leviathan is extremely unreliable, damages your own minions, anti-synergizes withIce Block and has a sub-par body.
If you have to limit your strategy and deck this much to be ready for an uncontrollable 2 dmg Hellfire, the effect has to be super-great, like that of Archmage Antonidas - it wins games if left unchallenged. But Flame Leviathan's effect is just that - a 2 gamage Hellfire.
It would be a gimmicky neutral Legendary noone really plays seriously, but being a Mage class legendary is a major letdown.

Ok , so I get that devs want to make more unique mechanics for the game and this trash it's their way of telling us that , but... BUT , I cannot be more frustrated with this as I have ever been with this game.
We got nerfed to oblivion starting with pyro (ok ... ok ... it was to "strong" at 8 mana , due to the angry kids screaming all day on the blizzard forums that is the root of all evil ) , then with freeze archetype ( again , same kids realize that was a second root of all evil ) . We are at the bottom right now , but I get that , every meta has ups and downs and classes that are at the bottom but one would generally hope that a new expansion would give those classes a " help " into the right direction.
I know a legendary doesn't mean that it would change a class but they're are example where it helped a lot such as Jaraxxus became a must have in the handlock which would be a finisher , another chance to live a few more turns to finish your oponet ( well handlock wasn't particullary in a bad shape at all but it was the only example that came to me right now ).
Now someone said that because we got Antonidas that is a generally good ( not always it's a "versatile " because it requires you to cast cheap spells to get value out of it ,but I agree it's pretty good when you get value out of it) this would be the payback for a " good " legendary . But the thing with what I am the most frustrated it's not the crappy Abomination effect , and not with those golem stats and cost but with the feeling of this card. It doesn't fit anywhere , it doesn't represent mage at all , it's even poorly designed , I can go on and on and on ... I would rather stay with one legendary that have this crap represent the mage class. At least Bolvar is a well know paladin figure or Neptulon which is well know in the lore and fits the shaman ( bot being is the same category as this "card" ) , I would expect this card into a warrior deck ( well they actually got it , in the best version with the juggernaut ) , it simply sadness me greatly and frustrates me that the best they could come up to for a class that represents heavily magic theme with a tank and mark it as legendary ... there are no words to describe on how many levels this is bad.

I couldn't agree more with everything you said. This is lazy design.
^I wouldn't call Antonidas an excellent legendary; it is merely average and not versatile at all. Most mage decks don't even use it since you need to have a deck filled with cheap spells, and most mage spells are fairly expensive (3 mana and above).
Well, Spare parts incoming
^ this makes a lot of sense: cloak antonidas AND get a fireball for example... Antonidas just got so much better. This new one seems really shitty tho.
First of all as a wow and hearthstone mage lover i really dont like this..... And i think all of the people that play mage and other classes dont like it.. AT ALL !! First this is a tank in uldar and i dont see how its related to mage, the art is boring and the card its self ... 7 mana 7/7 that is a bit of a letdown next the effect is terrible many people think so, and me too.like there are plenty of mage names in the warcraft universe and is this is the best optiofor mage ???? I mean look at the other legendarys this is a letdown.. Better without this card than to see it in the colection of mage cards i mean give us kael or some other dalaran mage or anything, anything than this please..
I think that legendaries should have the element of surprise to it. You kinda reveal to your enemy when you get this War Golem into your hand :P But still Antonidas rocks so its fine to have a mediocre/bad legendary
A gnome in an arcane-powered robot mining manacells for Kael'thas. It calls to mind any number of mage-compatible on-draw effects, like adding manacells to your hand or spiting nether charges at random enemies or "polarity shifting" the attack of all minions on the board. It would've been a mech, and a gnome, and a lower-cost than Antonidas, and endlessly more usable.
Thank you Blizz, you make me love Bolvar and Nozdormu now.
What's more disappointing is that mage players are not given a card to manipulate the top cards of library like tracking at all. IMO, the concept of this class is similar to blue planeswalkers in Magic where you have quite much control over the game, which would suit the profile of the class. Yet I see nothing but more RNG coming.
None of the Mage cards excites me. All of them are medicore. Rogue players got axed but they have the prince now. Mage gets nothing but opposing threats such as Kezan mystic. Great Job Blizz, you just made a rarely played class even less popular. I don't think anyone will agree this is good for the metagame if we only see same classes in the meta over and over.
chizuk - You destroyed him @_@ he couldn't even answer any more !
Well, i'll try, like you i have thought all day about a deck it could work in, but it's just impossible.
lol. Either that or he had had enough of me.
Only way I see even a remote value in this, is if there's some "Draw Mech Card from your Deck" neutral card, that I'm not seeing, for some reason. Like a Captain's Parrot for Pirates. Then, you could at least get the AoE to happen on your command.
what kind of halfwit would create such a card for mage ? i'm so fkin mad.

Killing eggs, enrage minions, improve cards like Frothing Berserker....

sorrry for bad english :)
I dont think there has been any card discussing thread where everyone agreed.
This must be the first one where EVERYONE agrees on how bad this card is. Even Bolvar´s discussion had many ppl liking it

There's even an arcane mech that would fit better.

Guys, please tweet or otherwise get the message across to the guys who are behind this thing.

Here's a back and forth between Yong Woo and I, where I air some of my complaints, via hijacking a GvG hype train post.

Official boards for Hearthstone are raging as well:
