Season 43 was my first season of Hearthstone. I've watched countless videos, read guides, read blogs, etc.. I started playing in early October and finally got brave enough to hit the 'Ranked' button and fairly quickly made it to rank 20 with a few different net decks. Learned the ins and outs and switched to a Zoolock where I easily climbed to Rank 7 by end of the season.
When 44 kicked off, I started at 18 and hit the 15 floor in about an hour.. no issues. From there, I made it to 14 once, and now am consistently getting killed. I know the ladder is harder to climb the first week or so due to everyone climbing, but I'm literally losing 5 games in a row consistently.. if not more.
I know I have "to get good", but my question is, is this fairly typical? I have no false illusions I am or will be a 'good' player, but I thought I was at least decent and that's fine for me. Playing and winning more than I lose is all I need for enjoyment.. losing 30 games in a day while winning 5 or 6 is not fun.
Interested in hearing other's experiences.. any similar experiences or am I really just that bad? :)
If you've only been playing a month, you are not 'decent'. You are still in the 'bad' category. This isn't meant as an insult, just a fact - you have to play this game a lot to get 'good' at it.
It also probably depends on what your goals are / what you define as decent. Do you want to be #1 legend? Reach legend? Reach rank 5? Reach rank 10? What's your goal? Start with a small attainable goal and build from there.
Most of all, keep playing. The only way to get good is to play.
Rank 7 is fairly impressive considering the total % of people who actually make it there in a month. That said, part of getting that edge is being familiar enough with the meta to know what decks are being ran, what cards they have yet to play, what cards to mulligan for in certain situational match ups, and when to risk committing to the board vs. risking holding off. You are probably a lot better than you give yourself credit for, but maybe not quite as good as you originally thought. In my opinion, while climbing ladder is great and I choose to do it time to time, I think part of what is great about the game is just making a deck that you really enjoy playing and playing with it whereever you equilibrate on the ladder. I mean right now I have been playing a dragon quest priest deck that is nowhere near tier 1 or 2 it is fun every game.
Thanks guys, these are all great answers.. I appreciate. And yes, I completely realize and agree that knowing mechanics is only one thing. .what I need to get better on is knowing the opponents plays.
I do think that my climb to Rank 7 was a bit diluted by the time of the month.. all the top players I'm sure were already at Legend or near it and I was probably battling mostly against newer players like myself.
Sorry I didn't see the part about you reaching rank 7 last month, I only saw the part about getting stuck @ 14 this month. Rank 7 is pretty impressive for a new player, regardless of the diluted competition or not. Keep playing and you'll keep seeing improvements.
Right now I hit a total brick wall at rank 8 and have fallen back to rank 10. The only thing to do is dust yourself off and keep trying (while analyzing whether your deck is correct for the meta, your plays are correct, you are mulliganing correctly, etc)
EDIT: or quit playing, which is what I feel like doing >_<
b)Be lucky because all tier 1 deck are highroll skilless decks
c)bm like an imbecile.
d)Play a lot.
e)Reach legend
If you are not having success you obviously don't do something from the above. The only difference between a good player and a bot is the variety of decks they can use to reach legend.I for example been multiple times legend adn i have been reaching legend those three months in a row.2 times with controllock and last month with a krullock lol.But anyone could do if he would played a ton of games with rogue.
Just keep playing and check which decks are meta in the ladder so u can play around some cards. It´s mostly just about knowing what ur opponent plays and reacting in the best possible way (except it´s highroll or keleseth since u can´t play around RNG)
Getting stuck at 15 right the start of the season is pretty common. The players you are going against are very often Legend level players that are working their way back up the ladder. I have found that what works for me at the start of a season is to just use a fast aggro deck, and grind through it by playing as many fast matches as possible, and hoping I can keep my win rate over 50%.
Its also a good time to experiment with different decks once you hit a rank floor. I got pretty lucky, and rode a long win streak to 10 really early, and now I am playing around with some decks I would otherwise probably not play. I'm not exactly advancing, but it's fun to play something different. After a couple weeks, I'll start pushing a little harder to advance, but for now, I am OK with Rank 10.
Here is the deck I used from 15-10. I can't say it is the best deck, but it is fairly cheap, and it was effective.
There are a lot of skills that you don't realize are necessary to hit the high ranks. If you want to get past rank 5, you basically have to know every card in your opponent's deck at all times, you need to know how to play around every possible counter, AOE, and secret, you need to be able to tech cards in and out of your deck depending on the meta... It gets heavy. But you'll get there if you practice.
I did manage to hit the level 10 floor just now, so happy with that.. can take some pressure off and play some different decks.
I've been watching a lot of streamers.. trying to get better at Arena too.. but can't get past 3 wins.. it will come I'm sure.
Arena is a very different game from constructed, and it's what I play the most. If you get good at it, you never need to buy packs again. Watch Kripp / Hafu / Amaz for Arena content.
I'm sure this comes off as whining.. but man..

I think you're putting the stake too high. Getting to rank 7 in your first season is impressive. In my first season I got to what? Rank 18, I'd say.
I mean, I didn't use any guide, but still... you were using a budget Zoolock and nowadays Tier 1 decks are prominent since rank 15 or less.
You are not bad. You're really good, dude. And I guess you played a lot, too.
Thanks for the further replies :)
