Would edit, but can't - another explanation for the death of Diablo coins is a server side hotfix change. I did have much, much better results yesterday than today - the first five or six runs were yesterday, rest were today, and today was much more in line with what I'd expect given the Coren (N) data.
I started recording all my results from completed runs. Once I gather enough data points I will post here. But what I can tell you for sure is that there is a lot of variance so it is perfectly normal to see very different coin hauls over 15 runs in 2 different days
Lord Banehollow normal, Avalanchan normal, Yeti Hunter Ranel normal & Thaurissan normal - each 1 time
Some general observations:
All runs are level 28 or above, which means you should have a decent chance at getting Mysterious Stranger, indeed I got one exactly 10/20 times (50%)
In most runs you have to go through 8 nodes (battles, boons, mysteries, etc...) in total, including the final boss. Exceptions are Lord Banehollow normal (only 7) and Thaurissan (9). I was retiring and restarting any run where I needed 6 or more battles on the shortest path that included the mystery (with 2 exceptions where the mystery was still quite early - needing 2 battles only)
There are 5 rewards at the end. Based on the position they appear let's call them 'Bottom Left', 'Top Left', 'Top', 'Top Right' and 'Bottom Right'. The first three are always coins from one of the 3 mercenaries that are part of the run's bounty, top right is always from one of the mercs in your comp and bottom right is comlpetely random
Heroic runs give more coins, even if they are not more difficult that other normal runs (hence my preference for Fallen Guardians Heroic). In particular, with the exception of the top right reward (merc from your party), which was always 10 or 15 coins, the other rewards were on average 15 coins (and never more than 20) in 'normal' mode runs, but had an average of 21.7 (with many 20s & 25s and even some 30s) in the heroic runs
Out of the 60 reward slots that are based on the run's bounty (top, top left, bottom left) 24 game me rare coins (17.1 coins on average), 18 epic (19.4 coins on average) and 18 legendary (19.5 coins on average). So that's 395 rare coins, 350 epics and 355 legendary ones
My party mostly had 2 legendary mercs (I did some changes during the 20 runs) and I was lucky enough 8/20 times to get legendary coins on the top right spot (so slightly more than the expected)
In 9 out of the 20 runs I also had 1 'elite' battle that theoretically gives more XP and rewards. In those runs I did have slightly higher than average coin returns (~1 coin above average), but this could easily be random variance
I also had 2 runs where I reached the mystery after 1 battle and it turned out to be the Warp, meaning I finished them by doing only two fights. In those runs I clearly received fewer coins (~3.5 below average)
In most runs I did exactly 5 battles. I have too few data with 4 or 6 battles to be able to tell if it makes a difference in coin rewards
If anyone would like to have the more detailed results you can PM me

So I completed 20 runs in the following:
