Ueahh... I KINDA see what you are saying, in that they both appear to be "mini games within a game". But in WoW, at least, it carried enough of the Pokemon genetics that you picked your stable of pets based on the fight you were going into. And you had to very specifically choose what character was going to take what action, and when, to clear a fight (and some of those were TOUGH, like mini Oondasta on Timeless). There was very little random involved for most fights.
I enjoyed the pet battling and collecting, as that clicked for me. I can't say the same for Mercenaries.

Pet Battles!
I never wanted to play Mercanaries. I gave it a try...its kinda boring. Still its somehow fun to do like a bounty the day just to kill time.
But i cant stop the feeling that i play Pet Battles lol...
