lAnyone playing ranked hearthstone nowadays knows there is an insane amount of combo decks on the standard ladder not limited to:
Mecha’thun Priest
Mecha’thun Warlock
Mecha’thun Druid
Togwaggle Druid
Malygos Druid
Shudderwock Shaman
Mindblast Priest
And a few other off meta ones.
Does anyone else see any sort of issue with this? Why are there so many viable combo decks in one season of hearthstone? I love playing control decks: control mage, warlock shaman, priest, warrior, and even control paladin. Problem is, there’s only one card in the standard format that combats combo decks, demonic project, and you have to get lucky even with that card to kill the combo.
I have the answer. A neutral combo breaker! Similar to dirty rat in the past, some sort of neutral card to break the combo decks. That way control decks that aren’t warlock, have a prayer of winning a ladder game vs a combo deck.
Is this the bitching of a control player? Sure. Should I just play a combo deck, or a mindless aggro deck? Yeah probably. But hey, the game has so many cool control cards in it, and it just feels like a shame that nobody can explore any of these control decks due to there not being a counter to combo decks that everyone can use. Blizzard gave us geist for 1 mana spells, and even dirty rat as a combo breaker.
Do you agree that hearthstone should have a combo breaker available to ALL classes? If so, what do you think the card should look like?
I'll post the same, watch this video around the 1 hour 42 minutes mark:
agree with the video about "sometimes its fine have a combo meta or a whatever meta" my issue with this actual combo problem (and probably the issue that everyone is having now with this decks) its the level of survivality that those decks get with the overdefensive cards that are perfect for combo decks but useless for anyother slow deck type. Druid is the best example, when you try to kill druid before he get his combo pieces you need to dealt with 4 or 5 1/5 armor guys (sometimes less but if you are trying to push damage the spreading plague ever push a huge board).
Also you need to dealth with 50 or even more armor gain in all the match and super big taunt minions. Its pretty...unfun. Warlok and shudderwock also have a lot of super defensive stuff that make you not hard but almost imposible to outrace those decks. When you face this stiuations vs a control deck is not a problem cause control decks wins with value and slow plays. But combo decks have not that weakness. They win in the late game with one or just 2 plays.
I’ve actually beaten 2 cthun decks when I’ve realized the deck they were playing. The trick is don’t play any minions. They can’t play psychic scream and are literally locked out of the game
You said yourself you need to retain a TECH card for the Plague (and mossy is suicide IF you are aggro most of the times). So if you go aggro and you face combo druid that gets his armor up and plagues working you auto lose most of the times (you can also lose to they taunt recruit mechanics but that can be a little RNG in you favor or...not). So this is when the triangle argument fails.
Right now Combo in some classes like, Druid, is literally an upgrade version of combo (cause is basically a lot of CONTROL TOOLS with combo engine that works pretty super good because Druid has acces to a splash of almost every defensive effect in the game (taunts, armor, AoE, single target removal, hero power that let him trade threats) but also one of the best combo engines in the game with a lot of card draw and pretty solid combo winconditions. And we arent talking about one but atleast 3 tier 1 decks.
So i stand in my position: combo just let contro out of the triangle, and only loses to aggro when they fail in the early game plan. Which is a problem cause aggro should crush combo not "win because combo draw bad on early" and that is pretty much why people is complaining so much. You can try to prove me wrong and i admit you have good arguments to do it but the amount of people saying "i have problems with combos, how i tech against combo druid, am i forced to play warlock if i want to beat druid?" is pretty big this time.
Mecha'thun combos are mostly just memes, only Mecha'thun priest is playable and even then, it is a very bad tier 3 deck.
Mindblast priest is just Control dragon priest, it's different from other combo decks as it solely relies on spells and can't deal insane amounts of damage in a single turn. I think the maximum is 19 dmg, and that's the best case scenario, most of the time that number is far lower.
The only insane combos left are druid combo decks and Shudderwock shaman. So, I believe the problem is druid, not combo decks in general. Druid has got so many insane cards that "any card with combo potential + druid == an insane tier 1 combo deck". Just look at Star Aligner, everybody said it's a bad card but with druid it's wreaking havoc in wild.
I think the biggest problem with the game right now is the fact that warrior wasn't the class that got the combo breaker card. Like, they only have one archetype right now and that is control. So what does Blizzard do? Well they give warlock the hand disruption despite the fact that warlock already has hand disruption in the form of Howlfiend, Treachery, Defile, and deck destruction with Gnomeferatu and Rin. Way to shit on a class that is struggling to be relevant Blizzard. By making sure that a relevant class that already has answers to combo decks, has more answers to combo decks. Just absolutely moronic choice. I think the worst part of it all is the fact that even if Control Warlock disappeared from ladder, zoo would still hold a large enough representation that the class would still hold a dominant spot in the meta.
Why is Blizzard so clueless with warrior? Just give them something that helps them fight these stupid combo decks. JFC.
With all that said, I am fine with their being no neutral combo disruption, but if a class is only going to have a control archetype like warrior, you have to give them something.
Also I think an interesting answer to combo decks for warrior would be a 4-6 mana spell that reads "summon a random minion from your opponent's deck, it deals attack damage to itself." This would automatically kill minions like Togwaggle, Mecha'thun and Azalina. It also creates interesting situations where maybe a druid keeps these minions in their opener but doing so dramatically slows them down allowing the warrior to get on the board. Something like that would work for warrior.

How about
Silent Infiltrator
3 Mana 3/3
Silence a Minion with the highest cost in your opponents hand.
A milder version:
3 Mana 3/3
Battlecry: Each player shuffles the highest cost minion to their deck.
