So I ran Big Spell Mage a lot before the expansion hit, it was honestly one of my favorite decks. I never got around to crafting Baron Geddon just because it seemed like a greedy card and I was doing just fine without it. Now, however, it seems that most lists I see run him. I wanted to know if you guys think it's a necessity, or merely just a good, albeit expensive, utility tool
As for me, this card is great with Jaina and even without her, his ability to damage the board is particularly strong against pallies. And pallies are the most frequent opponents on the ladder. I don't think that it is a must craft for big spell mage. It depends on the frequency of you playing this deck, your passion for it and obviously how it fares versus others. When I am playing Big spell Mage, I do not feel any urgent need to have him, as you rarely run into a situation where Geddon is just saving your booty. But I guess as another control tool it serves its purpose.
That is, craft him if you have spare dust and/or you love the archetype (which I do, but I am just too greedy to spend dust on this card).
I think so. I've run into a lot of situations where I thought I was on the verge of stabilizing after playing Jaina, only to have my Elemental removed before it could heal me up. Between all of the face hunter, aggro Paladins, and big Gul'Dan boards (plus 3 damage hero powers), it's starting to feel increasingly necessary to drop that huge heal.
He is worth the craft if you can. He's not really just a Win More card, but not a must have either. Combined with Jaina, he is almost a guaranteed win. At that stage of the game, you almost always get a huge heal from him, and something close to a board clear. It all but ends the fight with Dudeadin, if you happened to stay alive to see turn 10.
IMHO, mage is in a strange spot right now. If you get Jania out on curve, mage is a beast. But if you don't get her by T10 or so, you are toast. And I really hate decks that are so dependent on one card, especially a Legendary.

Yeah, it's really insane right now. I played only mage today, trying a whole bunch of things. I went a minion heavy Archmage Arugal route until I got savaged by the new Taunt Druid.. Then I tried odd control mage but that was pretty terrible too. I think you're right, the only hope Mage has of winning right now (other than brainlessly smorcing and burning with Trump's stupid list) is getting Jaina on 9.. And even then, she gets thoroughly raped by Hadronox, Bloodreaver Gul'dan.. Feelsbadman

" merely just a good, albeit expensive, utility tool", is not necesary, vs aggro is very slow, and vs control, you almost never wanna be play him

This reminds of that song by Kibler:
"He's not that bad if you're not dead... by turn 4!"
Unpopular opinion: Rogue is OP
