I just can't get it to work anymore. It used to be my favourite battle type, but now I barely ever reach top-4 unless I'm extremely lucky in getting a rat pack and the +3 attack when summoned early.
I find you mostly have to transition into them if you get a goldrin early, along with a baron. Rat pack is indeed the only early game beast that allows you to force them from the get-go along with pack leader. I'd say beasts "start" on 4 with hydra and highmane.
You are not supposed to commit to a build early... Even if you get a rat pack and the 3/3 guy, that's good maybe to carry you through the early to mid game, but you need to keep some flexibility and be ready to sell everything when you see a better late game strategy.
I would say don't commit to beasts unless:
-you get an early mama bear
-you can get a goldrinn + baron
Now with this you might go past top 4. just having a bunch of midrange beasts in play and hoping to see a goldrinn or mama doesn't pay off most of the times
What works for me is early Packmaster (don't commit to beasts at all without him I'd say and ideally triple him up fast) and afterwards get all the token generating beasts (Rat Pack, Savannah, maybe Infested Wolf), plus a Scavenging Hyena and a Hydra (which should already be an 8/4 and it is the minion you want to buff with the 'Give a Beast +2/+2 one). Later you need to replace Packmaster with Mama Bear, get a Goldrinn and win fast because after a while you just can't improve any more while other builds will keep getting better each round (Dragons & Murlocs in particular)
It centers around seeing Goldrinn and deciding if you want to go that route, it's not about early beasts. While I occasionally see Mama as the centerpiece, that's extremely rare. People just can out power the deathrattle buffs a little too easily now.

Did they nerf beasts during the last month or so?

Rat pack and Hyena to get you through the midgame. Transition to Goldrinn+baron and hydras late game.
