Heroic Grobbulus' Priest
Hello everybody! Here comes the guide for the second boss of the Construct Quarter, Grobbulus! Despite having a really scary look, he's actually defenceless against a buffed up Stoneskin Gargoyle. So we are going to throw one hell of a gargoyle in his beautiful face!
Background
Grobbulus has three main weapons in his arsenal, his hero power Poison Cloud, his Mutating Injection buff and the Echoing Ooze he can combo with the Mutating Injection. Poison Cloud will deal 2 damage to all enemy characters (including your hero) and if any of them dies from that, a 2/2 Slime will be summoned on Grobbulus' side of the board. His signature buff, Mutating Injection, costs (4) mana and will give a minion +4/+4 and Taunt, which will make his Echoing Ooze two 5/6 Taunt minions on turn 6+. Apart from that, there's nothing else...
Strategy
- You want to start the game off by mulliganing for a Northshire Cleric and a Stoneskin Gargoyle. Other buffs such as Divine Spirit and Power Word: Shield are great to kick-start the game too.
- Turn 1 is all about playing Northshire Cleric so that you can start drawing the turn after. You also want that opening to bait out a potential Slam which could hurt your turn 3 play.
- If the coast is clear on your third turn, play your Stoneskin Gargoyle and start buffing! Once it reaches 6+ health through Divine Spirits and/or Power Shield: Shield you are good to go with an Inner Fire, Grobbulus will not be able to beat it. Top it off with a Sunfury Protector's Taunt and Grobbulus will never be able to hit your face again.
- Once your main minion is set, you just need to control the board whilst limiting the damage your buffed Stoneskin Gargoyle is going to take even if that means healing it during your turn.
- Beware of the Echoing Ooze+Mutating Injection on turn 6 and after. You should keep a Mass Dispel for that occasion.
- Final point, beware of your minions' health and if you can't heal them, it is sometimes better to ram them in an opponent's minion instead of giving Grobbulus a 2/2 Slime.
This is a rather straight forward match again, where your main weapon of attack is going to be your Stoneskin Gargoyle and aligning your cards towards buffing him. The most important factor here is going to be you draw at the beginning of the match-up if you don't start with one. Good luck!
If you are having troubles with the rest of the Construct Quarter check my other F2P decks out for Patchwerk, Gluth or Thaddius.
Edit: After reading the comments, retrying to battle Grobbulus, I have made a slight modification. I switched -2 Silences for +2 Lightwells as you need those early heals to prolong the game. Also, Lightwell gives more potential combos for Divine Spirit and Inner Fire, overcoming the over reliance on Stoneskin Gargoyle.
Came here after using your F2P pally v. Gluth and this one was just as effective. Good on ya
After many failed attempts with various decks, including a number of priest variations, this deck had just the right balance to get the job done.
Funnily enough, I couldn't seem to luck out with getting a gargoyle early enough to buff up, and he kept wiping out my cleric on turn one or two, in the end, I chose to beef up my lightwell, ending up with 10/15 or so eventually, and coupled with a few other minions, got him down.
A lot of other priest decks revolved around buffing a lightwell or two, but none of them seemed to have the right overall deck balance to pull it off without a ton of luck.
Thanks yet again MrPLJ
I, too, only managed to win with an 18 power Lightwell. The cardstars just must not have aligned to get my Stoneskin out and buffed.
Either way, thanks for the deck, MrPLJ. Won and done!
Hope this deck has helped you beat the boss! Keep me posted and I'll be happy to help. Cheers for the support!
Any advice on what to replace Mass Dispel with? Got two Ironbeak Owl's in there at the moment, but I'm wondering if there's anything else that may be better..perhaps Spellbreaker since they have more health?
Mass Dispel is used for two things: Silence for turns 4+ and Card Draw. So your idea of substituting it for an Ironbeak Owl sounds good but Grobbulus' Hero Power will mean that he'll get a Slime the turn after. My advice would be going for Spellbreaker like you mentioned, as you really need to counter his Mutating Injection, which won't be played until turn 4 at the earliest. Also, 3 health is more than enough to survive the hero power, thus making Spellbreaker viable.
Thank you for this deck! I totally forgot about Stoneskin Gargoyle and it's possible synergies for this fight. You do need good hand so you can buff him enough and survive the process, but once he's 1/12 or 1/24 he can tank everything, and when you inner fire him it's game over for our friend from Naxx.
I'm having no luck, those 3 cards find ways to screw this deck. It's great, he manages to crush everything and the face. RNG won't give me that 1 shot win, lol, thanks for sharing this deck! Maybe someone can add a few changes to make this fight easier? If not, I'll keep trying, thanks!
