Brrhrrhrhrh it's cold in here ! Jaina is around the corner !
Edit : Replaced one Fireball and the Pyroblast by 2x Forgotten Torch which can help the trade midgame.
Since my first steps in Hearthstone I have played Freeze Mage and my first objective once the game downloaded was to build something with the freezing spell.
We almost all know the classic Freeze Mage, with a lot of recycling card such as Loot Hoarder or Acolyte of Pain, which let you go further in your deck and quicker.
Now that I have 1000+ victories with this classic Freeze Mage, I just want to share my idea of building a deck using almost all the Freezing mechanics. Why "almost" all ? Because in order for the deck to be still viable, there are some cards that cannot be removed. So we still have the Mad Scientist, Alexstrasza, Archmage Antonidas or my beloved Doomsayer.
What really change in this version is that I replaced the draw cards by freezing ones. So I'll now run 2 Cone of Cold, 2 Blizzard, 2 Frost Nova. And the biggest change is the use of Freezing minions. Turn 4 for Freeze Mages is the worst, you don't have a real turn 4 with the classic set and this is where the Water Elemental is interesting. With its 6 PV, it can trade the enemy board effectively, and most importantly, give you time by Freezing bigger threats. Snowchugger is an other interesting turn 2 to slow down your enemy in early game and even sometimes in mid game to block one bigger minion if you run out of spells. I ran both of them in the beginning but finally replaced one with Bloodmage Thalnos, to combine with Cone of Cold, Blizzard, or as a finisher/draw.
What you will try to do here is just prevent your opponent from attacking, and find the right spot to use your best combo Frost Nova or Cone of Cold or Blizzard + Doomsayer. One advantage compared to the classic freeze mage, is that you have more opportunities to combo your Doomsayer. But, as you have less draw and the Freezing spells are your only time savior, you have to use it efficiently, and sometimes have to wait one more turn and take some damages before playing your Cone of Cold or Frost Nova, in order to maximize the efficiency of Doomsayer the turn after.
So basically, it's a fun deck that I like a lot because I have always liked CC spells and it's in my opinion very pleasant to play and not so bad ! The freezing cards replace the drawing ones, and have, in the end, the same effect, which is to give you time. The drawing cards give you time by letting you having more cards than your opponent and get your finisher (Alexstrasza, Pyroblast, Fireball, Frostbolt, Ice Lance) (hello Divine Favor), whereas the Freezing cards give you time by giving you an extra turn.
Ps : One word about the last and unused freezing card : the Frost Elemental. This one is cool, and could be a nice card I think, but not for 6 mana... Maybe for 4 mana it would be usable but not now unfortunately.
Pss : For more information about how to play Freeze Mage (classic or this one) or for a deeper guide, feel free to ask.
water elementals usually live 2-3 turns. it means you are quite restrained in using of doomsayers.
If it lives it's a good sign ! It means that he is still here to trade and stall the enemy board, so you should have control of the game. But if you really are in danger, don't hesitate to suicide it in the Frost Nova + Doomsayer ! One good position to play it is after the combo, so that it is alone on the board, and forces your enemy to trade it before playing something else.
Hi ! Unfortunately,Alexstrasza is mandatory in the deck and is irreplacable. Bloodmage Thalnos is replacable by a second Loot Hoarder or a Novice Engineer if you prefer to have more draw. Kobolt Geomancer is great as a finisher with the spell damage.
whats better Pryoblast or Ragnaros to replace Archmage Antonidas??
Pyroblast is a good and strong finisher in freeze mages and can easily replace Antonidas. Ragnaros is almost totally useless in freeze mage cause you will 90% of the time face a lot of minion in the late game and ragnaros will just hit one of them (what you don't want) and be trade quickly. It's good as a finisher in midrange deck when you have control of the board turn 8-9. So you should go for pyroblast !
Hey there! I'm someone who's trying to play freeze mage for a week or two now, with about 100 wins and maybe around 80 ish looses. I think this deck lacks card draw, which I might be wrong, so I'm going to try it out for a game or two. I still need help with freeze mage as well, is it okay If I ask you to teach me how to play better with it? :D
Hello ! Welcome in the ice mages community !
You're absolutely right about the lack of card draw in this deck, and that's why I precised that it's more a fun deck than a ladder climbing deck. Sometimes it's also good to play for fun and use some mechanics just to enjoy and not only to win !
Freeze mage is indeed a bit tricky to play and has nothing to do at all with (almost) all other deck. We were talking about the card draw, this is the heart of this deck. Generally you play with 5-7 cards draw. The essential cards are : 2x Arcane Intellect, 2x Acolyte of Pain (which is generally a T5 because you want to ping it yourself to get maximum value of the card, but against fast aggro don't hesitate to put it on T3 to save 3 PV) 1 or 2 Loot Hoarder and the Bloodmage Thalnos which can be used either to draw or to finish your opponent. The Mad Scientist can be considered as a draw card (at least I do), because it will pull out a secret from your deck and give you a better chance to draw another more interesting card than a secret.
So in the mulligan you will ALWAYS try to get the Mad Scientist and the card draw (try to use them to clean the board as well (Knife Juggler, Darnassus Aspirant, Shielded Minibot), don't go face with it, unless your opponent doesn't have any minion of course). Against very aggressive deck (huntard, eboladin...) you should keep a Doomsayer and if you feel that you are going to be smashed, don't hesitate to put it alone on T2 or T3. Against midrange game or zoolock it's fine to keep in mulligan Doomsayer + Frost Nova which is your best and almost only board cleaner.
About board cleaning : you don't have unlimited ressources to clean the board and sometimes even if you can clean it, it's better to wait a bit to get full value of your combo. One feature of this deck is that you sometimes have to accept to take damages. You have 2 Ice Barrier and 2 Ice Block to give you time. So, it's better sometimes to take 6-8 damages on turn 6 while you have your board cleaning in hand and wait for the next turn to destroy another big threat.
There are few tricks with the Doomsayer :
- Against tempo mage, their secret are 90% of the time Mirror Entity. So just wait the right time to have a free Doomsayer without even having to use a Frost Nova or Blizzard.
- Against Zoo, let him fill his board with crap minions, and don't hesitate to ping the Imp Gang Boss to block his side with 7 minions. Then play you're combo and he won't be able to deal with it cause he cannot silence it.
- With Sylvanas Windrunner on your opponent's side, and if you're under pressure, it's sometimes fine to put the Doomsayer on board and Fireball Sylvanas Windrunner who will take it and activate it at the beginning of your opponent's turn.
Once you have drawn enough and controled the board, put Emperor Thaurissan to reduce the cost of your spells and minion such as Alexstrasza and Archmage Antonidas and just finish the game ! ^^
If you need burst and have control of the board, the combo Archmage Antonidas + Frostbolt + Ice Lance is perfect. If you are under pressure and need time and burst, Archmage Antonidas + Frost Nova is really great.
Against Priest, never use Alexstrasza before you have enought burst to finish your opponent in one or two turns !
Depending on what you face the most, you have a lot of tech cards :
- More draw with 2nd Loot Hoarder or Novice Engineer
- Explosive Sheep, very effective against aggro but totaly useless against control.
- One extra freezing card to stall the game such as Cone of Cold which can give you precious time and which is another combo with Doomsayer in case you don't have Frost Nova.
- Flamestrike is sometimes good
- The new Forgotten Torch can be really nice because it gives you a free removal in early game and put a cheap Fireball in your deck, so it's a 2in1 card which is good.
Thank you so much! I've read thoroughly and I'll apply them in my next freeze mage game. I've added you as well, If you're keen in spectating some of my games :-) I do have trouble deciding when and when not to kill minions, as well as which one (hero or minion) to ping. It's a difficult deck to master, but yet one of the most satisfying when won with.
My pleasure ;) I'll accept you and gladly try to help ! As for everything, the only way to master it is to play and learn from your mistakes. Times are a bit tough for freeze mages though, because of Reno and Warriors, but with experience (and RNG on your side :) ) freeze mage rocks (well, not really against CW...) !
If it can help you, this is another list i'm currently using and which seems to work pretty well (I'm around 10-0 with it, but only rank 6 right now) :
This one has a lot of draw, and uses the Forgotten Torch in place of one second Fireball and Pyroblast. I also replaced the Flamestrike with a Cone of Cold, it's a personnal choice (I'm talking in comparison to the classic Freeze Mage set that you fine quite everywhere). I haven't encountered great difficulties yet with this one because everything went good, but maybe i'll turn back to a more classic list in the future !
