BlizzCon 2015 Announced - Nov 6th and 7th, Golden Hearthstone Card Back
Eric Dodds on Blackrock Mountain
The guys at MetaBomb had a chance to discuss Blackrock Mountain with Hearthstone's Lead Designer, Eric Dodds. Check out our recap of the interview below, or if you'd like to read it in full, head on over to their article.
Quote from Eric Dodds
- Initially when deciding on Blackrock Mountain, the team threw up a bunch of ideas on a whiteboard.
- Blackrock Mountain is very different thematically when compared to Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes.
- It fit in really well with the 10th World of Warcraft anniversary being themed around Molten Core (which is in BRM!).
- Dr. Boom is not on the nerf list.
- They only want to nerf cards when it's "really negatively impacting the game".
- The team has discussed Karazhan as an adventure, and he'd "be surprised if they didn't do it at all".
- Not all cards in new sets are going to be designed to fix issues in the current meta, but some will be related.
- Cards have two stages of creation:
- Design: Make a cool concept for a card, and make it awesome.
- Development: Balance the numbers. Playtest. Balance the numbers.
- No plans to redesign the Hunter Hero Power, nor are they talking about it.
- They are not working on a console version of Hearthstone, but they won't rule it out for the future.
- The phone version of Hearthstone has an updated tutorial to make sure new players understand the game.
- No current plans to change anything about how new players can get brought up to speed with their collections, but it's something they're talking about.
RAGNAROS => For 3 mana, shadow word death, easy.
One card, 5 mana less when you use 2 and the same amount of ressources for a Dr... That's why Boom is OP and Rag not.
I think it is worth mentioning that at no point is a Dr. Boom slammed on the board a game over... Yes he does drastically change the board state, but their are plenty of other legendaries who alter the board in similar ways. I mean nerfing a card shouldn't be something done to appease a small portion of people tired of seeing an innately powerful card. Nerfing a card should be something that is breaking the game and making it unfair. Dr. Boom is a neutral legendary card with a high power level seen in a wide variety of heroes, builds, and decks. Saying nerf him because he is "TOO" powerful is actually doing the game a great disservice. All that does is set a precedent of laziness. Instead of lets see what I can do to counter Dr. Boom, or what works well against him. I should instead just tell the dev (Who by the way most definitely have playtested every card printed, and any one who says other wise is being very ignorant.) nope don't like it... it makes me use my brains to beat. Change it. Nerf it. Get rid of it. I guess what I am saying in short is it's a meta people, change to it to beat Dr. Boom and the meta will adapt and in a couple months their will be this discussion about another inately "Game Breaking" card.
These arrogant fucking designers never want to admit when something is unbalanced in their game. They only wait until their revenues decrease and they get pressure from brass before the nerf cards that need it. "Not even talking about changing hunter hero power" Really? You arrogant fucks don't even bring it up on occasion? This is the shit that makes the average Joe hate these people and their disconnect to the real world.
You seriously expect anyone to ever take you seriously when you don't have a civil thing to say in your post? People are now arrogant designers because they may not agree with you on a potential nerf. That's an incredibly misplaced self-important viewpoint. Given how well you write, I'm surprised you didn't attempt to convey your point without the personal attacks.
Perhaps you could clue the rest of us normal people in on what you are grousing about - honestly I don't get it. Is it Mechwarper, Dr. Boom? If you want to know why you can't win I would suggest investing in a mirror. People are getting to legend every day and people are having 'fun' playing the game. Sorry if you aren't one of them.
You're taking their decisions way too personal. And if you think you are the "average Joe" then you've deluded yourself. But the great thing about Hearthstone is if you don't like it, don't play it.
Hearthstone game is unbalanced yes and they know it but why are you harping on something that's essentially free, people are enjoying it and if they want can put some money towards it which they enjoy more, in Magic not all colors are balanced and this rings true to Hearthstone, instead of 6 colors to balance, they have 9 instead. This isn't say "World of Warcraft" where your paying a set fee and the moronic developers keep on altering the game with band-aids before a major patch thus fucking up a game more, somehow making more of a time-sink rather than fun which was the appeal of WOD. I think you posted on the wrong forums World of Warcraft is stage left.
The only thing I don't like about the game is Blizzard is being the meditator of the game, this should be officially done by a third party.
I don't understand the concept of making a card so bad and situational it will never see play...Cards like Rend Blackhand is a complete waste of resources and a card slot, no one will ever play this card after the first 3-7 days. Whys well not even be there. And Dr Boom DOES need a nerf, it's Undertaker 2.0. In every single deck.
Imagine if Magic: the gathering done the exact same thing if the card is overplayed (which there are few) you be having so many fucking rules and regulations you don't know what to do.
Undertaker needed that nerf cause you can get a 2/3 at turn 1 easily and it's too efficient for it's cost.
!!! Super Excited !!!
for what? for they to not nerf Dr.Boom???
And apparently we aren't allowed to discuss it either.

Neither of these threads were negative when I looked at them. Then a few minutes later they were closed. Can't even discuss.
Blizz has spoken and looks like HearthPwn enforces.
This site is literally cancer. It is why I was downvoted so hard for speaking the truth. You dare call out the developers for ignoring the obvious, and you are immediately some kind of invalid mouth drooler. "They are the almighty, they never make mistakes!" The only argument to not nerfing Dr. Boom is that everyone already runs him anyway, and that his affects aren't really changed from deck to deck the way undertaker was. Otherwise he is the strongest card in his slot in the game. The only card that might come close is Mad Scientist giving 2/2 and a free secret that can cost up to 3 mana. Many times the boom has to be killed with multiple cards, or even with BGH you can run ONE bomb into a belcher and kill it, and you STILL have the other bomb alive. The bomb damage also ignores taunt, and you can deal a possible 8 damage to the face with JUST the bots even if the other player has taunts up.
What I understand when I read "Dr. Boom is not on the nerf list" is that he is not in the list of already nerfed cards, am I right ?
No.
It means they are not planning or even considering a nerf (or any change).
Edit: Why did I get neg repped for clarifying the OP's question?
Because it was sarcasm.
XD
"Cards have two stages of creation:
I just have a hard time believing in this statement. If you balance the numbers and have play tested it...Dr. Boom would have never happened...FL would have never happened....Hemet would have never happened...all these unplayable cards in GvG would have never happened
What is FL?
