18.0.1 Hotfix - Discover Cards & Random Generating Cards Can No Longer Discover Themselves
Blizzard just announced an important hotfix aiming at improving the player experience on discover cards & r andom generating cards.
Full changes
Quote from BlizzardHey everyone,
We’ve got a hotfix going out later today that includes significant changes to the Discover keyword and randomly generated cards:
- Discover cards can no longer Discover themselves.
- Cards that ‘generate a random card’ can no longer generate themselves.
Dev comment: Overall, this change is aimed at helping games feel a bit more varied. While generating the same card can be an exciting individual moment, these types of experiences tend to have diminishing returns after a while. These adjustments should make for healthier games against classes with a ton of resource generation.
The hotfix also includes the following:
- Mr. Bigglesworth is now available in Battlegrounds to all players.
- Fixed a bug where the selected minion summoned by Jandice Barov would not have the death upon damage enchantment when summoned again with Khadgar.
- Fixed a bug where Headmaster Kel’Thuzad would not resurrect minions that were destroyed from being returned to a full hand.
These changes will take place on the server-side, so you won’t have to download anything if you’ve already updated to 18.0.
Quote from BlizzardThis hotfix is live now! Also to clarify how it works for a card like Shadow Visions—you're still able to Discover a second copy of Shadow Visions if you have one in your deck.
They noted that you can discover a second Shadow Vision with your other Shadow Vision. My guess is the change just goes for random generated cards but not cards that started in your or oponents deck. So you can discover a oponent Draconoid operative with yours is my guess.
I think these are two different situations. The drakonoid is in your opponents deck, so that won't count. The same with cards in your own deck. If you have a second version of a spell in your deck your for sure can discover it as it is a another card.
spam freeze is gone, this is a great for this game, 20 Rounds of freeze for 3 mana is gone, your full 8/8 board dying to a 6/6 hitting your face for 5 turns is gone
THIS IS A GREAT DAY FOR HEARTHSTONE
Hate to break it to you, but this has absolutely no effect on Tortollan.
Can they go ahead and bring back the 4x times bonus occurrence to class cards then? It was taken away because of cards like Frightened Flunky causing infinite chains in taunt warrior. They wanted to print the explorer cards Emerald Explorer Bronze Explorer Azure Explorer Primordial Explorer, but they didn't want to create the same problem they just created with the taunt warrior card.
I don't know why they decided changing the occurrence bonus was the way to go instead of making it so that the card cannot discover itself, but I don't really think discover cards need to have two different nerfs to their abilities. I think bringing back the class bonus is fine now that they cannot go infinite.
The issue about the class bonus wasn't so much that cards could discover themselves, but generally that the class bonus made some outcomes too likely, and the effect overall became a bit too consistent. Discovers have become more specific, which meant that in some cases, there were only a few class cards you'd frequently discover.
Official reasoning was: "As Discover pools have gotten more specific, some are too narrow and repetitive. This change will increase the variety of cards from random Discover pools."
Frightened Flunky was one such case, but not the first one. Another infamous example was Stonehill Defender in (Odd) Paladin, almost guaranteed to discover Sunkeeper Tarim or Tirion Fordring, just because Paladin had almost no other class minions with taunt. Likewise, at the time of Spiteful Priest, Netherspite Historian would very frequently discover either Duskbreaker or Drakonid Operative.
If they reintroduced the class bonus now, Emerald Explorer would frequently offer Ysera, Unleashed, and Azure Explorer would almost always get you Kalecgos or Malygos, Aspect of Magic. Also, Carrion Studies and Primordial Studies would be more likely to generate Prime legendaries.
The class bonus somewhat limits how specific the Discover mechanic can be without becoming too reliable.
That would be a massive buff. I don't want to see mage consistently discovering their Prime off of that new Spell Damage studies card.
Or Paladin consistently discovering Tirion, tarim and that new divine shield taunt.
The class bonus needs to stay gone.
In the earlier days it was fine, but power levels of cards have gone up with newer expansions; and being able to almost consistently discover specific class cards like Ysera Unleashed, Kalecgos or the Prime cards would affect a game way too much.
It was never fine. People ran Stonehill just to guarantee multiple Tarim/Tirion plays.
BOOOOOOOOOO this is one of the lamest changes ever.... Getting infinite generation is one of the most fun and interesting parts of HS and this isnt even relevant to anyone's experience except for people playing fun decks that arent competitive...
Good fix! That is all I can say
Talk about power creep when comparing this to druids book.
Tell that to the priest I faced today that received 3 additional Lucia's today off 4 invokes. I still had lethal up until the last one too.
Also, when is a druid unhappy to find a 2nd or 3rd Alex?
Just wrong friend.
In my opinion i dont think discover cards should be able to discover legendaries, unless specifically mentioned like Dragon's Hoard. I feel like it defeats the purpose of a Legendary card which is supposed to be a one of powerful card.
"Prepare to face the mighty Mllhouse Manastorm!"
hm, let me think,....nope, discovering legendaries isnt an issue. yeah, some times you get screwed by a random Barov you wasnt specting, but, it isnt by any mean as frustating as a quest mage chaining magic tricks and primordial gliphs or a renew chain of a almost dead priest. Legendaries are part of the game so isnt anything wrong of those being discovered.
You talking about wild, im not. In standard when Emerald Drake or Bronze Explorer discovers 2/3/4 DQA's. That's an issue.
*Emerald Explorer
Yeah, in the worst case scenario your oponent will swim in DQA, but most of the time it doesnt happen. you will get as much 1 extra alex, and by the point that matters is just a control vs control game, where you already consider extra value from your opponent, otherwise your deck wont win anyway.
You can discover an extra alex yeah, but also you can get just a malygos without spells, a nozdormu, a deathwing that you cant use until is the las resource, an onyxia, and a large amount of bad legendaries in pools that are not only for dragons.
JAgain, just because 1 or 2 legendaries are very good to discover it doesn't mean the entarie pool of legendaries should disapear, it doesnt make sense.
It does make sense. The point of a legendary is that its supposed to be powerful. In a lot of cases game swinging. Thats why youre only allowed to have one. If there was a card that said "Win game when drawn" even if the chances of getting it was 1/100, it would be busted and everyone would be complaining. Its the same concept. Just because a situation is rare, that doesnt make it a non issue.
