A Less Friendly Game of Chess is This Week's Brawl!
Things have gotten a little underhanded at Medivh's Magical Chessboard. Bring 6 unique cards and hide them under the table, they could swing the match in your favor!
Trivia
- This is a brand new brawl!
- The brawl comes to us from the One Night in Karazhan Chess Boss.
- A Friendly Game of Chess was a similar version of this brawl but did not allow for deckbuilding.
- This brawl uses the Wild format so all playable cards can be used.
How it Works
- Build a deck using six cards. No duplicates are allowed.
- You will be given either the White King or Black King. Your health is 20, the heroes are the same.
- Most chess pieces cannot attack normally. They automatically hit minions or heroes that are directly in front of them.
- Your hero power allows you to Discover a chess piece.
- Positioning is key. You'll get the best value if your minions are between his as they will hit two targets instead of one.
- Unlike other versions of Chess we can play, your 6 cards are put into your deck and can help you out!
Discuss this Week's Brawl
Head on over to the discussion thread on our forums for this week's brawl.
was really fun, good thing deathknights and evolve/devolve were banned or else it wouldn't be any fun.
winning in this chess is really easy since 90% of the people I played against really screwed up in the chess part.
Sea Giant is quite good
One match of this brawl is like a duel in WoW classic between two paladins: Plus Ultra boring and it takes a thousand years.
If this is chess, playing Deathwing is like turning the board over
It just reminded me of the nightmare part of heroic Karazhan
This is the most fun I've had in a Tavern Brawl since the last Boss Battle Royale. I've been able to make hunter quest work off of Pawns, and my Explore Un'goro has seen a good deal of brawls. 10/10 please make this a permanent feature.
As much as I love the idea of banning cards from tavern brawl, I find it ironic that it be done in a cheating themed brawl.
I have tried multiple decks for the brawl and in my opinion, this is probably the easiest combination of cards to help you win.
Here's a quick rundown of what you should expect from this brawl:
I truly don't understand bitching people about this brawl. The core point of HS is here - plan, predict etc., but here also placementis important at your turn, after turn AND look out at these special 6 cards.
The chess spirit is here :D It's fun & awesome.
IMO seems like for some people using brain in some different direction is hard & painful :/
IMO awesome idea.
I thought it's a perfectly fine concept. But it's a concept that lacks in execution. A true game of chess comes with static pieces that I can strategize with, make my plan, control the areas accordingly and then execute predictably. My issue with the Hearthstone iteration comes in that your good pieces can get buried way deep in the deck. The supposed fix for that is that you Discover new pieces, which is totally fine. .. Except that it costs you tempo. If the HP were 0 mana, I'd be more content with the brawl.
It's why I made my 'go around the problem' deck that, to my complete amazement, is sitting on the front page.
Don't get me wrong. Full marks to Blizzard on the attempt to make something innovative. It succeeds, but only to a point.
Lol i don't have Ragnaros so i don't no
Lucky I could do it with a friend again so nothing to worry, both of us got the pack easily :-)
Thanks to whoever autoconceded against me. Saved me some trouble.
How disappointing... Drakkari Enchanter does nothing!
Chess Pieces do nowhere state 'End of Turn'
The idea of banned card is amazing!!!
If only we can have this in last week's brawl
Worst designed brawl ever created.
GJ blizzard
Eh... the brawl is ok, I guess.
The original HS chess brawl was pretty cool, but it got kinda boring after a couple games, due to a lack of variety. So, mixing it with class cards actually sounds like a pretty cool idea.
But being limited to 6 single cards and the Black/White King hero power along with 20 HP makes it a bit too restrictive. Half the time, you play the regular chess game, and in the 6 added cards, you can't really get too ambitious or experimental to do something original with the chess setting. Most players I've met just covered the basics, like cheap/efficient removal and some sort of burst damage. There are a couple interesting cards that can shine in this one, but it all felt a bit mediocre.
The idea of banning cards is very interesting, but it also feels strange to see cards "banned". I think they could make some good use of this feature in Brawl and maybe also in Constructed periodically, but after I've seen all the cards for Shaman banned, I think "bans" have to come with good reasoning and careful analysis. It just feels weird to have the game tell you that you can't use specific cards for no other reason than "probably kinda unfair", when several other powerful cards are still allowed.
If they use "bans" more in the future (they bothered adding a graphic after all), they have to put more effort into communcating them, since it feels like a soft nerf, and balancing has to be made transparent.
What do you think about Wicked Skeleton + Shadow Word: Horror combo guys?
I just tried it earlier, I got an 11/11 Wicked Skeleton. LOL
The problem is that it's slow. You can play your combo on turn 8 if you have both cards in hand and the board is full with chess pieces.
I played Ragnaros in this brawl and it crashed the whole game, and it kept crashing whenever I relaunched the game until I eventually lost the brawl . Has anyone else had the same problem or is it just me?
