Ben Brode: "We Might Rotate Some Additional Classic Cards to Wild"
Ben's been a busy guy lately! Mr. Brode took to the official forums to discuss the goals behind Standard and wanted to let everyone know that if the team doesn't think enough will change, they have no issues moving problematic cards out of the basic and classic sets.
- The ultimate goal is to keep Standard fresh every year.
- If the same Basic and Classic cards appear too frequently each year, that won't be them achieving their goal.
- Meta will always need to be watched to make plans for the next Standard year.
- Releasing new cards is better than buffing cards from the classic and basic sets.

Quote from Ben BrodeThe goal with Standard is to keep the meta fresh for each yearly rotation. There are some benefits to keeping Basic and Classic cards in Standard: Returning players have an entry-point to the new format, and new players experience classics like "Hogger" and "Arcane Missiles" that are iconic and great introductions to the game. People take breaks from Hearthstone, and being able to jump right back in with a few cards you already own and understand makes that experience a lot better.
That upside has a real downside in working directly against the big goal for Standard. It needs to feel different each year, and if Basic and Classic cards are still appearing in large densities year after year, we will not be achieving our goals for Standard.
We knew we weren't going to get there when the Year of the Kraken began, so we nerfed 12 basic/classic cards, to put more of the weight of the meta into the rotating sets. We always knew we'd have to watch the meta to see if any future changes would be needed when we got ready for the next year of Standard. If things are looking like they are going to be too same-y for that next year, we could see more nerfs, or we might rotate some additional classic cards to Wild, like we did with Old Murk Eye. No matter what, we're committed to making Standard fresh and exciting each new year. (Source)
Are you guys considering, besides nerfs, implementing buffs for underused vanilla cards?
Given the goal of Standard is to keep the game fresh each year, it's important to keep a lot of the power of the cards in the expansions, and not in the basic and classic sets. It's not clear what that balance of power should look like (is it ~10 cards from the basic and classic sets on average?), but we're currently skewed so high towards basic and classic cards in decks, that we are at high risk for 'samey-ness' as the years change in Standard. Buffing Basic/Classic cards *increases* that risk. If the goal is to get more cool cards into the meta, just releasing awesome new cards in expansions should make an impact there, and still keep Standard fresh. (Source)
Not sure if I should PogChamp or ResidentSleeper
I guess I have to think about it the next couple of years Blizzard but trust me I HEAR YOU I FOLLOW ALL OF YOUR COMMENTS (ironic, you guys will understand what I mean by that^^)
IF Some One got near my 1600 new dust Bloodmage Thalnos I'll switch to Pirate warrior and screw the META >:O !!!!
What about my 3200 dust Bloodmage Thalnos? You better stay away from us, Blizzard. I don't want to start playing aggro once again.
"No matter what, we're committed to making Standard fresh and exciting each new year."
Well, i have a proposal for the community, we choose a classic/basic card (via pool) like chillwind yeti, and put in every deck until it gets rotated out, then we choose another one until there are no more classic cards to ban.
The developers still don't get it. They are too focused on making the game profitable instead of fun. This is exactly what ruined Diablo 3.
I've already stopped playing because Pirates are super OP and standard is no longer worth playing. Whispers of the Old Gods was probably the only healthy meta. There were more rogue decks in that meta than in any meta we've had in the history of the game.
I probably won't be playing this game again until pirates rotate out in another 2 years.
It sucks because I thought this game had a lot of potential, but per usual game developers are just trying to cash out and push all the free 2 play players into spending money. The only way that will happen is if they feel like the game is worth the money.
The past 2 expansions have been powerful, but not fun. It's fucking GVG all over again. And as for all the Reno decks, I don't feel like spending 100 dollars on cards so I can craft all the new legendaries to play Renolock or Reno Priest, which are the only fun competitive decks in the meta. All the other decks are super easy to play, typically not interactive.
I've been on board with the progress of this game and I've been a patient since GVG for years. I was waiting for their library of cards to expand and for the developers to get better at the game. But going right back to printing OP 1 drops is just something that is beyond frustrating. The only thing that's saved the meta is that Renolock is even more OP than pirates and Dragon Priest has enough taunts and high value early drops to beat agro decks consistently.
But those 2 decks will rotate in another month or two and then you will be left with the worst fucking meta in the history of the game. And this idiot is talking about removing cards even more cards from standard. The Grim patron decks while hilariously overpowered, were at least fun, cheap to build and didn't go off until turn 8-10.
What these developers need to understand is that the customers are willing to put a certain price tag the game and if the cost to enjoy the game exceeds that, they will quit. And once they quit, the cost will go up even more, because they won't be getting all the free dust and cards that you get from playing regularly.
I'm really disappointed, because this last edition just ruined the game.
You do realize that they could rotate something like Southsea Deckhand or Fiery Waraxe, and keeping the meta fresh is done exactly because players think it's fun, and because especially pro players keep complaining about stale meta?
When reno and dragons rotate, something has to fill the void. They won't just let pirates rule the format the whole time patches is legal. I wouldn't be surprised if the cards that rotate out of the pirates deck hurt them as well and/or they print something that will punish pirates and make them less effective. I can understand your frustration, but the lack of effective cards in karazhan hurt standard and MSG is the first set to start fixing it.

Keep drinking the kool aid.
This is announcement is a load of bullshit to make it feel like they are trying to improve the game when they are really trying to make the game more profitable. When they say fresh meta, they really mean you're going to have to buy more packs to keep up with the meta.
Pros are complaining about the meta, because the game isn't balanced and there are so few viable cards at the top level. They make tons of bad cards every expansion. If they stopped making bad cards, the meta wouldn't be stale.
They intentionally print bad commons and rares, so that the good epics and legendaries are worth crafting and so people spend more on the game.
The problem with this is that they are pricing their game like a real CCG except that you can't buy, sell, or trade cards. You just get digital content that becomes obsolete once the next OP edition comes out.
This game isn't worth 100-200 dollars a year to play.
Don't say this or that game is not fun/is a money grab/it's only made for the money......
99% of the time developer profits ==== Fun game play.....
If a game is not fun, it will not be profitable.....just like if a movie sucks, it'll lose money at the box office. People who say, "Ooooo this game is a no fun money grab", just because they don't like/can't deal with the current meta are hypocrites!!! They are basically saying "this was a great game when I was stomping on people....but now that there is a new meta where I get stomped, this game sucks"
How about playing just for fun and learning to adapt to the changes that all CCG's go through. Just a thought...........
This post is not meant to be a dig, but more of a see things from the other side type thing. :)
Let's just say that 6 out of 10 is the "suck point".
alright, so if they go through with this, what would be the point of their saying of "having a foundation for players coming back to have familiar cards" when they're not even there or they're nerfed to shit? they keep going back on their word over and over.
Great, change blade flurry costs 2 mana and old effect
praise the non-stop spells YOGG
leeroy back to 4 mana
auctioneer 5 mana 4/4
call of the wild 8 mana
molten giant back to 20 mana
AND THROW ALL OF THEM TO WILD, FFS, I WILL PLAY WILD UNTIL I DIE.
p/s: was struggling between buying a classic pack or keep doing arena, now I knew the answer
I thought you were an dummy until you said ''put them into wild'' and i was like YES :D
If Blizzard truly cared for new player experience they would give more rewards to new players based on how many expansions there currently are.. dunno why they don't give a free wing of each adventure, more packs, more gold, free welcome bundle to new players..
being a new player now and getting past rank 17 is IMPPOSSIBLE or getting started now at all.. in GVG all you had to say is " ok craft boom, and get some mechs then start getting gold and you are fine"
now you tell a new players.. hhmmm you can try and play that budget C'thun deck that can't beat anything or try some jades that are MEH which you also need a legendary for..
Aggro: There are only Pirate decks, you need patches or you can't even start talking about anything need 1,600 dust AT LEAST, the rest of the deck is cheap but no patches is a big drop in power.
Midrange: dragon decks or shaman (BRM +kara or LOE + kara)
Control: new player playing control? good luck they were never cheap.
The biggest problem with HS is that the card pool increases but the rewards and F2P structure stays the same if I would start playing HS today
I would quit in a week seeing as I would never catch up.
There should be a way to get all legendaries of every expansion. Now I have the idea that buying adventures is more rewarding, you get all cards and some decent legendarys (although quality varies, see LoE vs Karazhan). It is always a wild guess when you buy new packs of expansions what you are going to get in value. Having an option to get all legendaries in an expansion, maybe make them uncraftable so dusting is no option, that will be interesting for people to play more. Saving dust for epics, rares is do-able in the current system.
I have a better idea Blizzard ! Let's just nerf some classic cards instead putting them into the wild. And finally release The Lich King card and stuff like that, that would make you money for sure, Blizzard.
And yea we will all be happy and satisfied.
Oh, i see, it isn't enough money.
