Ben Brode: Purify Will Not Appear in Arena
Ben Brode has clarified that Purify will not be appearing in Arena in the latest episode of Hearthstone Designer Insights. We've recapped below!
- The card was not intended to be powerful.
- Internally they tried Silence any minion but they're trying to cut back on Silence to see what the game feels like without it.
- Purify was 1-mana at one point but was changed due to play testers using it just to cycle through cards.
- Ben acknowledges they messed up with the timing on Purify with the community's current views on the Priest class.
- Purify is good for the game, but maybe better in a set with flashy, exciting Priest cards.
- Ben has hopes for Dragon Priest.
- Purify will not show up in Arena. This is due to them not having a system in place where they can balance card appearances individually but do have one which can remove cards completely from the draft. "It won't solve Arena balance but it's a step in the right direction".
It's not good enough to just "admit" your mistake. Admitting the mistake and still releasing the shitty card, is still pretty bad. Fixing it is what's important. And not making it available on arena is simply not good enough. They need to actually fix the card. (make it one mana, or draw two cards, or able to silence enemy minions...)
I dont get how people can be defending this guy, he has called the community stupid to their faces. this guy is bad news and needs to be gone.
Ok. so we give Priest a OP card. So what? Have you looked at Shaman and Warrior lately? And so what if it's' way stronger than Arcane intellect? Mage has it's own OP cards. And so what if they use it to cycle? Have you looked a Shaman and Warrior lately? What entitles only these classes to have broken cards?
Priest needs a broken card or two. (or even 3 or 4). Really. Just because Ben Brode makes a few points that makes sense in his mind, doesn't mean that it's actually right... And silence not being anywhere in the game is just dumb. It's a solid (and I would argue necessary) mechanic.
Priest needs to be thrown a bone. And saying "we fucked up" and not fixing the issue, and keeping Priest pretty shitty for the next 4 - 8 mos. is not really an answer. People will simply not play priest. Priest needs something broken.
They're not making changes to cards FeelsBadMan. Even though they dont reprint cards *coughing*, they refuse to make certain interesting card-effects playable...
you tried using blessing of wisdom as a cycle? it requires a minion that can attack, so you need to have board control. one mana purify would simply require you to have played a minion with a battlecry or non vital effect, its much easier to use as a cycle. one mana cycle is not broken, zero mana cycle is. however they did not want the card to really be just an auto include in combo priest so yeah you cant really go for a 1 mana cycle.
Wow, gotta stay aware of those pesky combo priests... Also Power Word: Shield
you dont need to be playing a combo deck for zero mana cycle to be over powered, just because they unintentionally gave other decks unfair cards, catagorically does not mean you should make cards that should never be made. zero mana cycle is not healthy in any way for any game. if you are playing early to midgame minions that dont have vital effects, then it is my honest opinion that there is no way you would not run this card in priest if it was zero mana.
quite apart from that, yes cycle has to be a 2 mana minimum you heavily limit future design space in the future by not doing that, i.e. you make making good cards harder in the future cause everyone is scared it will be used in some broke ass combo and I'm not just talking about priest here cycle cards, cards that draw straight away, i.e. not the new egg should always be more than 1 mana, look at flare, no one is complaining about that change. Besides Mr Brode is not saying that he doesnt think it shouldnt be ever used as a cycle card when you dont think it will get value just that you shouldn't put it in in preferance of cards like loot hoarder or that you should ever really build a deck with it in never expecting it to get value from the silence and just using it to burn through your deck. its the same reason tutors are a unhealthy mechanic from mtg.
So, even when this card was less shitty (1-mana), people still used it only for draw, and then devs fixed it by increasing its mana cost? Seems logic.
And how it works with the new card, Purify? Should we silence our own dragons? Twilight Guardian? Azure Drake? Maybe Ysera...?
I thought this developing team is awesome, but I changed my mind when I realised they can't even admin that they make a mistake.
