This is a great first legendary for a new player with no cards. However the deck recipes range from terrible to tier 3/4 at best. So it wont ever be in the meta for any but the most memetastic of players.

TLDR - Keep pressure so mage gets in all defensive postion which ruin his plan to setup your lethal. Consider teching beneath the grounds; consider pirate package.
I main highlander mage so here's my 2 cents: Try to acquire and keep board control from start. Keep sap for 6 mana drop - emperor or Sylvanas. It is very destructive. Try to keep pressure and adopt the role of the aggresor in the match. Renomage is control untill win condition is met. Some use Medivh for extra board pressure to finish you after Alex. Try weapon removal against those. Some use Antonidas. Its a slower version, more effective for me at least. Needs lotta preparation 1. cheap spells to combo with Toni 2. Toni turn 3. 13 thirteen dmg at best the next turn from hand - 2xfireballs and hero power (could be 15 - keep track if frostbolt is used) + dmg from mage minions. If you put enough pressure mage will use his cheap spells early. Those are - 100% of the renomages run - arcane blast, forbiden flame, frost bolt / nova, volcanic potion and the greatest advantage is he cant afford his Toni turn because you'll finish him if he doesnt deffence. Some dont have finisher other than Alex and hope for his fireball, torch and minions. As I said if you pressure he cant play Alex as he is losing whole turn at late game which is devastating. Generally rogue has better draw and is more consistant at getting the cards he needs. Unlikely, mage count on controlling the game long enough to get what he needs. We dont have soul tap or auctioneer. Renomage uses Thalnos, azure drake, arcane intel, some include loot hoarder or acolyte. No other draw mechanic (!some dudes run Curator and jewel scarab , but its not that common )
Now beneath the grounds. Its nasty against mages. Wlocks draw faster so I guess it doesnt really help you in this m-up. It ruins early kazakus which might just win you the game. Some 5 mana pots are capable to turn the game around in mage's favor. If you pressure enough and he cant Reno early enough you can win aswell. IDK if you can find slot in your deck for it but, God, is it nasty to play against this card.
IDK if you run pirate package but it'll help you in renomage m-ups. Solid early game puts you in great position. When I see rogue skipping turn one and only hero power on turn 2 even w/o attacking Im getting relaxed and confident for the match. If you open aggresively you pressure the player himself, you're squeezing him, opponent usually panics and throw resources ineffectively. Its a psychological thing :) take advantage.
Finally I wanna tell you that more or less mage needs luck! Its not as consistant as Renolock with goldlike draw nor as regular constructed decks with 7+ pair of cards nor as combo decks heavily build around combo and card draw. Renomage just not always get what he needs. Treat it like the heavy control deck it is and try burn asap. Ice block or Reno could easily be at the bottom of the deck. Lotta games I dont find one of the said cards, it happes I dont find either.
Good luck!

Some people may call it a cancer card because of how powerful it is, but in reality Its uniqueness has allowed it to create a whole new archetype that has overall been a great and welcoming addition to the game.
