Yes, that's true. But neither Soul Cleave nor Earth Elemental saves him either, and Shadow Word: Ruin clearly offers more value.
Also, Brawl should be offered either way.
It didn't offer Brawl or Shadow Word: Ruin because even if it did, you'd still be dead. The only spell that could've kept you alive for one more turn was Frost Nova.
