It really says something that in most other games I play I would cheer if the lead developer left ::cough:: WoW ::cough::, but reading that Brode is leaving Hearthstone makes me legitimately sad.
I think people have realized at this point that shudderwock is just another OTK deck. Agro kills it. Start focusing on the real problems. Its just a fun deck, lemme have this one.
The problem comes when you get all of the OTK haters coming out of the wood work and demanding that the card be nerf because they feel combo and OTK decks aren't intended as a legitimate playstyle. Even if this deck further crashed to a lower win rate they would still complain about the few times they would get matched up against the deck.
My complaint isn't that the deck exists, but that there's no tech card available to counter it. If you queue into a match with one with a control deck there is literally nothing you can do except hope you can kill him before he completes the combo, cause you have no other way to prevent the combo from happening. Against Quest Mage, on the other hand, you could try for a good pull with Dirty Rat if you were running it, and if you got very lucky and picked off Tony the game was simply over.
got otked by shuttercock combo at 30 life and some armor at rank 20.
if you guys think its okay coz of 'its low win rate'. do you want to wait until people learn how to sequence the deck properly with all the proper cards before thinking its a real problem?
it has low win rate because a) not everyone has the right build b) they are not piloting it well coz they are new to the deck. i have played against enough shuttercock players with a variety of decks to know the card has to go.
This is the same with Open the Waygate, everyone hated that card because control got destroyed by the OTK. Shudderwock OTK is a worse version of the mage OTK. shaman doesn't have good AOE and survive tools.
Except Exodia Mage could be countered with Dirty Rat, while Cancerwock has no counter outside of Warlock (Gnomeferatu).
What needs fixing is the perception of the HS community. The OTK is frustrating to play against when it works, but it’s a bad deck that works infrequently. (Sure, Toast did well with it, but he’s a pro - especially with memes.) While it’s early to read a lot into the data, OTK Shaman has seen some of the most play, and the HSReplay statistics have it at a ~45% win rate. It spends the whole game playing weak draw cards and low tempo battlecry minions, leaving it vulnerable to all but the slowest control decks.
You might compare this to the Quest Rogue nerf, which also had a poor win rate but was super polarizing. The major difference is that Quest Rogue had some OP matchups. Shudderwock OTK only has positive win rates against 3 classes, one of which is Shaman, and another - Warrior - which has seen tons of experimentation with objectively slow control play in the form of Odd Quest Warrior.
Shudderwock is a powerful card which has not seen nearly enough deck experimentation outside of the OTK. A nerf this early will ruin the card to satisfy mob mentality.
There wouldn't be a problem if Cancerwock didn't share another characteristic with Quest Rogue: the complete and total lack of a tech card that can counter it. You have no way at all to interact with the Shaman's win condition, just as you had no way to interact with a Quest Rogue's ability to complete the quest, so the entire game is decided by draw and nothing else.
Rework Sarnoite Chain-Gang to read Battlecry: Put a 2/3 knight with taunt into play.
Shudderwock, even if nerfed, is just bad for the game. When streamers and tourney players play the deck, combo off, then WALK AWAY FROM THEIR COMPUTER while the combo is doing its thing is bad for the game. It screams this game is easy, takes no skill, and boring to play.
That would nerf handbuff decks. Sure, most handbuff cards are Wild now, but it's still a concern.
Leave the card as it is and instead learn how to play vs that deck.
What exactly can I do differently other than pray that I get lethal before they draw all their combo pieces? There is literally nothing that can be done to stop a battlecry from being executed, and every piece of the combo is a battlecry.
If you don't equip the weapon until you can play Azari, you're really decreasing your winrate.
I'm just telling you what my opponents were doing. Like I said I almost always hit Rin with a silence anyway, usually I wouldn't lose until I was finally out of removal and my opponent dropped N'Zoth. When I played Cubelock myself I didn't include Rin, but more often than not I didn't draw the weapon until late in the game anyway.
Cubelock has been severely weakened by losing N'zoth. Prior to Witchwood when I lost to Cubelock with one of my control decks it was usually after I'd used all my removal and they dropped N'zoth. Since the rotation, I've steamrolled every Cubelock I've faced.
Right now the only deck that pisses me off is Cancerwock, and that's really only because there are currently no available tech cards to break up the combo.
Losing N'Zoth was a setback, but it's not as bad as it seems valuewise, just add Rin as additional win condition, there is still no other Controldeck that I'am aware of, that can outvalue Warlock.
Oh and Warlock even has a techcard to break up the Shudder combo.
Too sweet indeed :)
You know you can’t play Rin in cubelock?
Why? It was frequently run in the K&C version of the deck. My answer to it though has always been silence. My silence priorities are as such:
1) Rin
2) Cube
3) Acolyte
I'm also playing mostly odd decks ATM, and since MC Tech is odd I figured what the hell and put him in a few of my decks. Has won me a few games, and can be particularly useful against Cubelock since their big plays put more than four minions on the board.
It was run because of Medivh, if you can't destroy your own weapon, there is no point in playing Rin.
I never once saw Medivh in Cubelock. Usually in my games against Cubelock Rin would be played early if at all, and if it wasn't silenced by me they would simply wait until after playing Azari to equip the weapon.
Every aggro/mid-range can win against it honestly (aswell as cube locks with Glinda + Gnomeferatu). Shudderwock is strong, but isn't that the point of a legendary card? I get that it's necessary to nerf OP cards, but he just isn't. Just a great legendary. His animation is the only problem. It says something that Shudderwock decks have a very low win-rate. I like the idea behind Shudderwock, but I'd be more tempted to run him in a control shaman deck (with cards such as Elise, etc) than to use him in an OTK deck.
The problem with it is that only Warlock has a tech card that can break the combo. For every other class it's a completely non-interactive matchup, infact I'd say it's worse than Razakus (which I also hated playing against) because with Razakus you could at least try to pick off Raza with Dirty Rat. The only thing I can do now is rope the Shaman every turn in protest and hope they don't draw the combo before I get lethal.

Elemental Mage is another example of a deck that can beat it that isn't aggro.
Any deck can beat it, it depends entirely on the Shaman's draw. To actually counter it though, you need either an aggressive deck, or a deck with a lot of burst potential.

Quick idea I came up with for a replacement of Dirty Rat since it has rotated out:

Post-nerf Warsong Commander. Went from being an effective burst card, to arguably the worst card in the game.
