My name is Fon. I used to play Hearthstone ranked in its earliest days. Most people knew me thanks to my dedication to Handlock and "weird" techs like the 6 drop cow with taunt, and ooze. My best cred is top 200 only Handlock.
Due to life punching me in the face harder than aggro Rexxar, I had to quit Hearthstone. Since last week I come back to Hearthstone. However, the game has grown to be something completely different:
Many game modes. I'm lost. Mostly grinding arena now since it's what I know. But playing the same guy twice makes me think. Is the player base of Arena shrinking?
I like Ranked/Standard. However, I'm not sure I would spend much on this. Pokemon TCG is gentle to returning players. I could buy 2 sets of League Battle Decks to come back to the game with an S Tier deck.
Decks and strategies are also super scary to me. If the barrier to get "moderately good" at the game is high, I'd rather not come back to Ranked.
Open to other game modes. As long as they don't ask me to grind through stuffs. I have gone past that age...
It's a completely different game now than what it was when you played last. Just take your time to discover and try out all of the new modes. I'm not exactly sure the point of your post as you only ask one question regarding arena player base size.

Have a good day.
Returning player gets a free meta deck which is nice. Battlegrounds and arena I'm not a fan of but some people like it. Tavern brawl just do for the free pack once a week.
Also ladder is always a grind and not relaxing/casual play. But it's the most accurate experience, casual is a lot of people just quitting with bad hand or mulligan.
Lots of cheap decks to hit legend with. Secret mage, handbuff paladin, murloc shaman, kingsbane rogue can all get you to legend in wild for less than 5k dust per deck. These decks usually only run one legendary
The game is WAY worse than it used to be. You used to have to think about plays and actually make informed decisions at least sometimes. Now? Not even close. The decks win, not the players because Blizzard insists on creating broken synergies with no weaknesses and no way to counter the stupid crap. So the game is perfect if you are a single-cell organism with no brain. But, the OP seems like hes not that so he'll be disappointed.
Paladin and Mage are BOTH 100% broken still and this is after they ALLEGEDLY nerfed them which of course they didnt.
Think long and hard about getting “back in” to one of the most expensive play to win card games out there. If not.. the most expensive.
you can have fun with the other modes but obviously over time they will potentially suck you in to paying some big bucks.
unfortunately the metas always come down to one or two decks. Right now for wild Secret Mage holds the title. For standard paladin and mage. There’s not much creativity all around. You kinda have to play those decks to achieve legend. Yes there are counters.. but those counters become the same thing over and over again. Just like the meta.
so ya.. just decide what it’s worth to you personally first before diving in. It can be dangerous for the wallet, and not much fun for most of us when you have to grind the same thing over and over ... for what?
Subjective. I've been plaging since Beta and it's WAY better now. Go play Classic mode and gouge your eyes out at how boring it is. Tell me how Handlock or Freeze Mage required skill...
The only deck that probably require some thought throught the history of the game is probably grim patron warrior

Boring? Watching Mage draw their entire deck by turn 5/6 playing zero cost spells is "fun"? Watching Paladin have every possible answer to every possible thing you can even imagine doing is fun? Having NO good neutral counters tro any of this horse dung is fun?
What current borken decks do you think take "skill". Im ready to laugh my arse off if you even mention anything paladin, Mage or basically anything else. The skill has looooong been removed in favor of game-over turns and ridiculous synergies. Its great for the 7 year olds so they can win too but it makes the game suck. Its a casino. Thats what theyve mad it into. Its not a "CCG" anymore because it isnt "competitive" at all. Its just "win at the matchup screen" or "draw busted crap before your opponent does". Thats all it is.

The game has always been what you described it to be. There was never any 10000 IQ strategy behind the game, and that's what makes it likeable. If you want startegy then there are tons of games out there that offer it. But those games don't offer what HS does in other departments.

You can play Classic Mode, it's the Heartstone experience you know.
Warlock is unplayable, you need to play Paladin to win.

Handbuff and darkglare beat secret most of time right now. Pirate warriors and murloc sham do well too. Shit even kingsbane beats secret mage a lot
