Have the default comment sorting be BEST, which means top-rated top-level comments appear first (i.e. on the first page). Also allow sorting by NEWEST, but that shouldn't be the default.
Currently, great comments drift off the front-page never to be seen again.
Poe, just wanted to let you know that your feedback has been noted. Thanks for the suggestion!
Just a thought. Something more along the lines of Reddit or Disqus sorting. Plus, those achievements about getting 50 upvotes on comments, just not going to happen when potentially good comments move off the front-page so quickly. Some good comments immediately get 6-10 upvotes, but as soon as they move to the second page (and beyond) they stop getting any upvotes at all.
Plus comments such as "This card's effect is random" get upvoted so they would stay visible, thus you wouldn't get six other people parotting that information throughout the day, because they would have seen the original information, upvoted, and at the top of the comment list.
I know that we currently lack the tech to allow people to change sorting themselves, and we could switch news posts right now over to a "score" algorithm, but there are a few downsides to where the default sorting is set to top scores and its impossible to change it. The main reason is the same reason why the current system isn't the greatest, some comments are always "lost".
With the current way, its potentially really good comments getting bumped down, with score sorting its the new comments which are automatically put to the end.
This will be discussed internally and I'll be sure to provide an update when I've got one!
So have you discussed it? 4 years later :/ Sorting comments is the most basic functionality of a community site. It motivates to write better comments, engages discussion (good comments that engage it don't dissapear under tons of +1s), enables effortful comments to be seen. I'm pretty sure it would result in more people visiting hearthpwn.
It's not something we're looking at right now but I'd never say never. I still think it would be a positive experience to have on the site, the tech just doesn't exist.

Has this been addressed? Pretty much every comment section I see these days has the option to sort comments by newest vs top.
Beer before chess leads to success. Chess before beer, should've had a beer.
