I respect your opinion though, I'm glad you're able to enjoy both type of games.
I also enjoy both kinds of games. In fact, I'd say that if you love RPGs you're *far* more likely to like an MMO like WoW that someone who doesn't like RPGs.
As I'm curious if I should play it myself, I'm going to revive this. Is it worth it to start up WoW (I'm going to play as F2P as I can), or should I keep it in my 'queue' of things to try out next, my current queue being: BRM (when it comes out), Terraria (when it updates for mac), Overwatch (when it comes out) (well, that's a lot of stuff that has yet to come out) Should I start it up? Should I wait until I'm bored to death? Should I ditch it altogether?
And if I should play, what should I expect? Should I expect Hearthstone-style or Skyrim-style? Is healing OP (which I've found to be true in most all action-based games, as EVERYTHING YOU DO you go in with full health)? Do I need friends? Which classes should I keep under my thumb, or should I just play them all? Do I need to farm everything? Do I NEED expansions to have fun? I have experience with MMOs (played Clash of Clans style, Runescape style (run around and if there are people, great, if not, you're on your own, open world), and Spiral Knights style (automatic lobbies, and floor-based, NOT open world))
To me, playing WoW is like going for a walk in a park (not the raiding part, that is). Of course you don't get the health benefit an actual walk in a park do for you, but the more I walk away from end-game content, the more I enjoy the leveling experience.
About expectations...
WoW is WoW, so it's not really Hearthstone-style or Skyrim-style or any style. You travel around the world, village after village, finishing quest, getting experience, until you hit level cap and go with a bunch of dudes to kill some bosses, get some phewt loot, and then... kill some more bosses. One thing though, is that I think the fluidity of character motion is unmatched by anything out there, which is a very important aspect for an MMORPG.
"Is healing OP" implies that you want to play PvP games, yes? Not much experience there. But they do a lot of balancing stuff with PvP. Not perfect, as there is no "perfectly balance state", but you can certainly have fun with PvP.
"Do I need friends?" - No, friends is not a necessity. The leveling is trivial to the point of... got no word for it. Example: a 5-year-old kid that doesn't know english (a european or something) leveled up a mage all the way to Lv80 (the level cap at that point). However, if you have friends, preferably in the same room, will greatly enhance the experience. But then, doing stuff with a bunch of friends is always fun. End-game PvE content does not require you to have friends as well. You can play it like a single player, there are even queues for boss killing, you are going in with 24 other dudes randomly picked and just go game.
"Which class? Play them all?" - well play the class you like, there are no OP class in WoW, slightly OP, yes, overall must have, no. If you got so much time and is an altaholic, well you can certainly play them all. The leveling content can keep you entertained for only so long but if you enjoy it (I know quite a few who do), sure, play them all.
"Farming" - Farming is not as effective as playing the auction house game. There are professions, requiring a bunch of stuffs. I don't like farming, and I never do (except farming bosses, that is), but it's still not a problem.
"Expansions" - Yes, because while there are people leveling, the majority of people are, sadly, at the end-game content, which requires you to have the expansions.
Overall it's a game that is very friendly to the players, I find it enjoyable because it is a relaxing experience. Some hardcore players consider me tourist but whatever. I am no longer going hardcore anymore and I am still enjoying this game.
Feel free to ask, I will gladly answer. As a WoW player of course I will encourage you to try it out. I think they are doing free to play till Lv20 thing. So if in doubt, you can certainly try before you buy. Hope this helps.

If you're looking to play it casually, hell yea you're going to fucking love the game. But what I quickly realized when I started playing 6 months ago is that it's impossible to catch up to the level of the people who have sometimes been playing for 10 years. There's just so much shit to learn it's crazy.
It's the same problem with Hearthstone right now: new players can't catch up except in Hearthstone's case all you do is put a few hundred $ and you're set.
I played WoW from beta through the first expansion. The initial years of the game were quite fun. I had the fifth character to reach lvl 60 on my server (Alleria), met some cool people and had a ton of fun with PVP, and the occasional instance raid.
What killed it for me was after the release of the first expansion; you really had to be in one of the 24/7 raid guilds to get the gear needed to compete well in PvP. The BG's went from who had the best TEAM to which team had the best GEAR.
Instance raids taking many hours, often to be rewarded with nothing is called "PvE". Well, I kind of hate PvE, so yeah that was the end of it for me. MASSIVE time-sink if you are the type of person who likes to compete on a high level.
If you enjoy PvE, and the acquiring of "things" for your character, "things" that will be rendered obsolete by the next "expansion", then yeah I would recommend it.
My first MMORPG was "Dark Age of Camelot". The end-game was almost entirely PvP, and had three factions rather than two. For me it was a better game conceptually. Heck even Shadowbane was better conceptually, but the problem with PvP-centric games is that the strongest team often recruits the best players from the weaker teams, becoming even stronger...thus eventually killing the game. Kind of analogous to humans vs. the other creatures on Earth, but I digress....
up to you if youve never experienced an mmo and want that whole experience wow is where its at til you get bored of it, but that won't be for a long while probably. I played wow up until the first expac then got really bored. However I'm more of an arpg kinda guy if you are too you could just play poe instead its like d2 and its free.
Edit: what other people are saying is true if you have a tendency to get sucked into games and don't wanna ruin your life... assuming you have one.. you mayyyy wanna sit this one out.
I have played offical wow for 5 years and private server wow for other 5 now. being an old time player, I have my personal opinion on the game. I play WOTLK because it's the only available option that I still like. To me, however, the game started dying when TBC went out. They made everything wrong due to plain and simple greed. The very hardcore gamers I knew all ragequitted when it turned out their epics would have turned into trash with the expansion. I think that they should have just kept releasing new content forever, as other mmorpg do, instead of releasing complete game rehauls each expansion. I tried Cataclysm and was horrified by the level of dumbness the game had reached. I don't know what Blizzard has in mind for the next 10 years. The original game is still great and it would work today as much as it did at the time. (Improving graphics means nothing for those who loved it 10 years ago)
You posted your WoW story on the 5th of March too, on this exact same page. :D
I started WoW a week after release and ended playing it 4 months after the first expansion because my friends stopped playing + my guild splitted and this game is very boring if you are alone at high levels.. I never enjoyed farming for items anyway (which is the main focus of the game) The way more entertaining questing was never a real focus of the end game. I also had fun with the PvP system but again.. Without farming items (which is very boring for me) you had a huge disadvantage. I looked at WoW a few months ago because I was interested how this game evolved and I was disappointed.. Things I didn't like were extended (damn this long raids) and funny things.. Like the skill tree were made that simple that even people with severe handicap can build perfect characters.. It has just become very boring.. I would just read the lore if I were you and start new promising MMO'S if you want to try them.

Well there is always a free trial of WoW so you can always give a try. Another thing is private servers (they are free) if you are a pirat tipe of gamer :)

i will say very simple, choose one:
a) your life
b) world of warcraft
c) look at a) and b)
If you never played an MMO before, WoW is definitely worth trying. The game is old but it is the most classic mmo out there!

Completely different game and this thread is months old. By now OP already begun WoW and quit or has a max level character packed with epics.
XD
Well played.
WoW is worth starting, if you are fed up with conventional drugs.
I started WoW a week after release and ended playing it 4 months after the first expansion because my friends stopped playing + my guild splitted and this game is very boring if you are alone at high levels..
