first off I just recently started playing hearthstine, And I understand at Hearthstone isn't pay to win.
BUT , pretty much every deck revolves around a few legendary cards. And unless I olay a rush deck I feel like after around turn 7 who ever has the more rare cards usually more often than not insta wins.
If I'm o my sitting on a fire elemental and hex sitting in a Dr.boom and some giant or dragon is the game realisticly even fair at that point.
I come from League of Legends and it seems like the equivalent to someone with no runes and masteries playing against someone with a full runes and masteries
It's not pay to win. It's pay or grind to Control. Aggro decks are cheap and very viable for going up ranked. Midrange decks take more time/money to make and there's very few that are viable. Control is extremely expensive in time or money.
Note, though, that the most efficient way to go up ranked is aggro, NOT control which really hurts the 'pay to win' argument.
It would be like if LoL kept about 5 tier 1 heros unlocked for free, but all of the rest of tier 1s and all of the other tiers needed to be grinded or bought. Thus if you just want to win you're all set, but if you want variety then you will need to work at it.

Playing with no runes and masteries in League of Legends was awful. I played this game for a long time, and I did not knew any player in the Diamond spot where I was playing that was not paying to buy in-game champions (via RP).
But I totally disagree with Hearthstone. I've only paid 20 bucks to acquire Naxxramas, the rest was F2P grinding with Arenas. If you manage to craft the card you really need to play the decks you wants trought good dust management... you can afford to craft about a Legendary or two a month + a couple of epic and some rare/common along the way.
I manage to gather between 1500-4000 dust each month by doing Arena runs each 2 days approximately.

1) Be patient, realize that grinding a collection f2p will take several monthes to build even 1 competitive deck on the ladder (minus some of the really cheap rush decks.) And probably a year or longer to get a full collection. To compete on high levels in the ladder not only do you need to be experienced with all heroes, you need to be familiar with all of the meta decks (best way to understand all meta decks is to take the time and play all of the meta decks to understand their strengthes and weaknesses so that you can better play against them/build or play decks that are favored to beat them.) So you need pretty much a full collection to get to that level. To think you deserve to compete at the highest of levels in the game right after joining is incredibly absurd. So no you dont have to pay 2 win in order to be competitive, but if you choose f2p then you nneed to have a ton of patience and realize itll be many monthes before you get to the point of being competitive.
2) If you are impatient and feel the need to be comoetitive right away, and enjoy the game enough. Then yes your best option is to invest in the game and "pay to win" and buy a chunk if packs. My recommendation is purchasing 180 classic pavks and 180 gvg packs to start (6, 60 packs which is $300). This should give you all of the essential cards, and if not you should have the dust you need to craft any of the missing epics and legendaries that you need for 5-6 of the core meta decks. This allows you to be competitive right away by skipping 90% of the grind, and then you should be more then capable of gradually filling in any remaining blanks over the next few monthes so that you can gain experience with any and all past, present and future consistent meta decks as they are discovered.
Tl:DR, game is only pay 2 win if you are too impatient to grind and gain experience, and are too competitive and pigheaded to use loses as a learning experience to better yourself and your game as opposed to being salty and laying the blame on elements that are outside of your control. s

This guy actually blamed the matchmaking system being not that much random... don't read is recommendation as something fix. You can enjoy the game while being F2P. I only bought Naxxramas and was still able to hit Legend after playing 4 seasons to gather some key cards to make a good amount of decks.
You need to grind a lot of Arena thought to get that much dust... but don't fear that, if you enjoy Hearthstone as a TCG... you'll find your place. Nobody enters Hearthstone telling himself, I'll be the better player in the world tomorrow... unless they are willing to spend a lot of money on buying card packs (which I don't advocate, but it's your right to do so).
And it's not true you need a high collection to compete on the high ladder. I do not own several legendaries that are considered a staple in many decks, just because I decided they were optimal to craft for my style of play (like classes legendaries you won't use). I focused on getting legendaries for 3 classes, and then, proceded to make myself a place in Legend after 5 seasons of playing intensively.
This, without spending more then 20 bucks, only to buy Naxxramas. So don't listen to this guy, telling you that you should spend 300 $ to begin in Hearthstone. It's nothing more then a bait to make lose money before you are sure you are enjoying this game.

With 50 dollars, given a normal rate of packs opening... you would gather an average of 2000 dust... not nearly 4000. More about 100 $. And oh I'm not willing to pay 100 $ for Hearthstone. I'm enjoying it as a F2P player, I'll stick to this. It's easy to collect enough dust to make competitive decks. Just make good Arena runs.

Remhouse, you post is evidence that supports my recommendation. You spent 4 seasons to get good enough to reach legend, which is 4 monthes to get enoigh cards to finally build your handlock deck. So 4 months before you were competitive on the ladder. As per my first suggestion about choosing the f2p root, you need to be patient as I said since itll be a long grind (even longer if you play casually) to get the gold for the arrna runs/packs to build your collection to make 1-2 of the competitive decks. So if you are a patient player and willing to grind and learn along the way instead of whinning like you have already done in your OP, then yo7 should probably be fine. My recommendation to spend money to get the collection faster so you can start being comoetitive and learning all the meta decks at an accelerated rate (and know that you enjoy the game enough that you wont quit after a month or two) then simply spend the cash and save yourself from the annoying grind and frustrating handicap that you can expect to experience in the first few seasons of being f2p

I reached rank 3 on my first season with a F2P deck. I played a Zooish deck with Warlock... with like bad minions... but I crafted some cheap ones that were good and efficient at the time. It's easy to do a good, while efficient deck. If I had to do the same thing now... MechMage would be my go to.
I'm sure I could make Legend with a F2P account if I had enough time to devote myself to such an extent (which, unfortunately, I'm not willing to do since I'm already spending enough time on my main account).
Still... you don't need money to be ''competitive''. Being competitive is something pretty relative. On my first season, my goal was to reach rank 10... which I actually managed to did quite faster then I expected. Then I pushed it up to rank 8, 7 and so on... finally reaching a ceiling at rank 3... where I could barely win/lose all the time.
It's all about a point of view. If you fix yourself a personal goal (not reaching Legend in the beginning) according to your skill level, it is ok to ladder to a point where you are satisfied. One of my friend fixed is goal to reach rank 10 this season... he just began. I helped him a bit, made him a Shaman deck that was worthy to play. He's doing quite well, without spending a dime on the game. So far... the only epic card he has is DoomHammer... and he's willing to win more matches then I expected with the good old Hammer.
It's not annoying to grind the ladder. It's fun. It's constructive. It's a learning experience in construction. Again, it's all about point of view. If you are frustrated each time you lose... I guess you are better at the pay-to-win way.

i have to disagree on pay 2 win part.. yeah it kinda might appear like that but even if u dont pay u can grind ur cards and still win.. it's just a question of how much time you actually want to spend in this game + if u have most of the common/rare cards + naxxramas there is no way u wont be able to have a decently good deck to win enough .. and getting most of the common/rare cards isnt really that hard
epics are mostly niche/fun stuff and legendaries.. well you will get some from packs aswell don't worry..
in constructed everyone will take advantage of the cards they own and the time/money they spent to get them.. so i think you should play some arena aswell (there u are picking a deck from random cards and u can get anything... so everyone in arena starts from the same point) websites like heartharena.com are pretty good
Like any game you get outta HS what you put into it, and that can be time and/or $. Win some games, open some packs, figure out which dominant deck you wanna make first and concentrate on that. Soon it won't matter what everyone else plays.
Play Hunter, Zoo, Mech-Mage, profit .-. those aggro classes are pretty cheap, but if you want to try something slower, control-based, it's not P2W at all, it's just grind alot 'til you get what you need
oh wow. This topic again. have not seen this in... maybe a week?
First of all you don't even describe p2w correctly, what you describe would be p2p since you need to invest money to play decks/HS in the first place.
P2W: Through paying X amount of money you get an in game advantage which is not obtainable through normal play.
P2P: You pay X amount of money to play a game, either per subscription or once.
F2P: You don't need to pay money to play the game
HS is maximal pay 2 enjoy since you exchange money to time and that is the whole model of every good F2P and has nothing to do with P2W so please stop using the wrong terms. You are sad that it's hard to get legendary cards and that's your right, that doesn't make it anything close to P2W but only a boring grinder game.
P2w would mean that if you pay money you'll win every game, at least enough to reach legend. Is that true? No, it isn't. Can you reach legend without spending money on the game? Yes, you can. Therefore it is not p2w.
pay 2 win would be: for money u have more cards in hand, or more life at start, or any actual advantage during the game, in exchange of money. This is not the case.
Getting the cards takes time, but you are free to NOT netdeck and don't use the same cards. To be totally fair toward legendaries, you only really need 6 to play all the meta decks, all the others can be subbed...
Well the matchmaking has been brought up many times (putting players with barely any cards against people with full collections - and not how many legendaries you have in your current deck vs same for other player) and I do feel it is a valid point and something that blizz should really look into. As a 1 year F2P player who has barely any legendaries and epics I far too often meet the situation where whether you have a legendary decides the game. There are situations where having an Alex/Tirion/Leeroy/etc. will decide the game, and I mean having any other card would not affect the match in any way but that one card wins it.And I think the older the game gets and the wider this gap grows the more this hurt the game (attracting new players) unless they implement some sort of collection-%-based matchmaking.
Otherwise the P2W argument is a bit complex I feel. They always say even with a basic deck you can reach legendary, that skill weighs more than overall card-dust-cost, but I'm pretty certain that if you put two equally skilled players against one another while one has access to more cards, then the one with the larger collection will win out over many games. But then again, that would still not mean that the person did buy his cards, so that's where it gets murky.
Either way, a better matchmaking system would quell all this anguish from new players who are getting slaughtered by piles and piles of legendaries in their face. They don't really have that ramp, that adaptation phase that players who are playing since the dawn of the beta had.
With 50 dollars, given a normal rate of packs opening... you would gather an average of 2000 dust... not nearly 4000. More about 100 $. And oh I'm not willing to pay 100 $ for Hearthstone.
Everyone who has actually recorded dust values of large numbers of packs has come up with an average in the ballpark of 80-100 dust per pack. So it's not unreasonable to suggest $50 = 4000 dust. It might be a little less but it's certainly nowhere near as low as 2000.
Sure you get a lot of packs with the bare minimum 4 white + 1 blue = 40 dust, but the epics, legendaries and golden cards drag the average up considerably. You don't get a lot of them but they are worth sooo much more dust.

Well as a new player, you have 2 choices.
1) Be patient, realize that grinding a collection f2p will take several monthes to build even 1 competitive deck on the ladder (minus some of the really cheap rush decks.) And probably a year or longer to get a full collection. To compete on high levels in the ladder not only do you need to be experienced with all heroes, you need to be familiar with all of the meta decks (best way to understand all meta decks is to take the time and play all of the meta decks to understand their strengthes and weaknesses so that you can better play against them/build or play decks that are favored to beat them.) 2) If you are impatient and feel the need to be comoetitive right away, and enjoy the game enough. This allows you to be competitive right away by skipping 90% of the grind, and then you should be more then capable of gradually filling in any remaining blanks over the next few monthes so that you can gain experience with any and all past, present and future consistent meta decks as they are discovered.

pay 2 win would be: for money u have more cards in hand, or more life at start, or any actual advantage during the game, in exchange of money.
