I was referring to the reward structure of arena. Where 3 wins is not a guarantee return of 1 pack plus 50 gold.
The one thing I don't like is that when you collect most of the cards and are only missing a few legendaries and epics, it's not worth it to spend gold or $$$ on packs as the odds of you getting all extra cards is extremely high. It really is a genius business model.
That isnt what you said before. In your earlier post, you said 2 or less wins will "always" get you less than 50 gold. the source you cited contradicts that. yes, you can get less than 50 gold sometimes, but you can also get 50 gold, even for getting 1 win, which is what I am saying.
Thats the problem I have right now haha. I want to fill out the couple legends I am missing but it is hard to justify dropping another few hundred dollars when realistically I am just buying dust as the chances of getting specifically what I need are so low haha. At the same time though when I consider the ratio of dollars spent to hours played its still pretty cheap compared to any other form of entertainment so its not so bad I guess. It still hurts though haha
Was watching Kripp's stream yesterday and he threw out the idea that Blizzard may discount the classic packs in the future. Chat obviously made fun that it was insider info, but I know this has been talked about for a while.
Will there come a point where there are just too many cards for new players to get in the game? The majority of the core cards that are needed to make most decks are from the classic set.
Plus the fact that ever since GvG, you can no longer get classic packs from arena.
Do you think it will happen? Would it help new players enough or not? How soon would it happen (any chance it will be a suprise when BRM launches?) If not, maybe when the next expansion is released?
It may happen, things will have to change by the time they release the next expansion (not adventure), or they will hit a wall similar to World of Warcraft. They lost out on quite a few possible audiences due to the fact that the level cap got so high it wasn't really fun/logical to have to work THAT hard/long to get to end game. Eventually they had to find way to make it come easier.
I wouldn't expect a discount any time soon, but probably beginning of next year they will manipulate the way you can get your collection quicker in some way. Either through giving more gold, discounting, or some other variation there of. Just don't expect it any time soon. Blizzard usually caters more to the casual players than the hard core. Thus to keep that audience they will have to change their business model at some point when the entirety of the collection gets too large.
Though don't ever expect it to get too easy, if it was the 'collecting' part of the game would have no meaning. A card collection is something meant to be worked toward over a long period, months maybe even a year for some.

Will there come a point where there are just too many cards for new players to get in the game? The majority of the core cards that are needed to make most decks are from the classic set.
If that's the case then all they have to do is just craft from the classic set instead of the expansions. For example, other than Dr. Boom, a new player doesn't have to craft ANY GvG legendaries and can safely focus on classic legendaries. If th egame changes and new expansions come with a ton of viable cards then the reverse will be true and classic could be ignored.
I mean when I was new, Ciarne, Ragnaros, and Leeroy were the #1 picks. Nowadays no newbie has to craft the first or third and can, instead, go for Dr. Boom and Sylvanas. Myself I had to craft all three THEN craft Dr. Boom when he came out. Warrior ran things like Baron Geddon and sometimes Ysera. New players can skip both. Bah, new warrior isn't as expensive in general as old warrior.
When it comes to the regular booster packs, the ability to craft any card at any time takes a lot of the stress from the issue, especially since new players will NOT have to craft the decks we cherish now AND the decks we cherish 3 expansions later. All they need is to know which cards are viable at any point in time and just craft those.
This is coming from a player who joined a online card game during it's 8th expansion. There were thousands of cards with another 100+ added every 6 weeks. I never picked up 1/3rd of the cards. I never had to. I just first netdecked the current viable decks, pulling from this expansion and that expansion as I went. When I went to making my own decks, all I needed was a good database to search out cards that could help with one move or another. It was actually interesting as each scan showed cards I didn't know existed that I could pull.
So long as 'dust' remains the only tool needed for crafting any expansion, there won't be a need to discount past expansions.
There ARE two issues though:
1. Adventures. Crafting a Ragnaros costs the same as a Dr. Boom: just a matter of what I need more given the meta (boom). I can't make the same choice between Naxx and BRM. If I want JUST a Shade then I'dhave to go through all 5 wings of Naxx which takes a F2Per about 10 weeks to save up for on average. THEN if I want a BRM card I could have to do the same again.. this is for 4 cards.
Classic packs won't need a discount. ADVENTURES though will.
2. Arena. If there's any way I could be wrong, it'll be because of the decision to force arena into only giving the latest expansion. That WILL make it harder to get past expansions as arena players will mostly be getting new expansion cards but won't be able to easily fill out the classic set without going the less efficient booster route. That's an unneeded meh, especially since you could just have an 'option' hidden that lets you change the set via drop box and just have the default start at hte new expansion. THAT will cement the 'just as easy to get classic as any other deck' matter.
Thus for competition or casual sakes, that's really it. For collectors..well.. honestly, trying to go the Collector route AND the free route AND not jump in early is the way of madness anyway.
I am extreeeemly doubtful that older packs/adventures will ever have their price lowered. As I am not a blizzard employee, (as far as any of you know) I can not guarantee you that it won't happen, but I will die of shock-induced heart attack the day that it does.
You need 30 x 9 = 270 cards to make 9 decks, past, present and future.
Where those cards come from doesn't matter. Cards that were staples will be replaced by cards from new expansions, and there will be no reason for new players to get cards from old sets when they can just buy new expansion packs. Best example is Cairne, from must-craft to don't-waste-your-dust.
So, in the future, you might not even need any cards from the classic set, so its price is irrelevant.
Something else I could see happening in the future is increasing the basic set of cards (the free ones you get when starting) to include some of the weaker/vanilla cards (like Spider Tank) as more and more expansions pile on.
While doubtful, there will come a point where there are just so many cards that opening even a pack a day it could take forever to even get the most common of cards, let alone sets of 2 and even more so specific/good cards you're looking for. This will theoretically be years away though. The crafting system does help immensely, but as long as Blizzard keeps power creep to a minimum there will have to be some change or it will deter new player from starting by the sheer dauntingness of 1000's of cards and go against their basic principle in HearthStone of being as simple as possible.

Totally agree with this point. I want to complete my collection but if I get cards too easy I will not be very thrilled when I will find a new card and certainly I will loose my interest.
You need 30 x 9 = 270 cards to make 9 decks, past, present and future.
That's not true - you can use neutral cards such as yeti or boulderfist ogre in every deck. That will significantly reduce the total amount of necessary cards.
I was just thinking this. I'm trying to get one of my friends started on HS but if he started now he'd need a lot of classic cards, Naxx, and BRM soon to keep up (not to mention GvG which you get from arena). I definitely think they need to make some changes to ease new players in. I mean basically the way I see it now new players have to fork over $50 just for Naxx and BRM if they want to stay competitive. In addition, they'd have to grind for so long for classic and GvG cards

Of course he needs a long time to get the good cards from classic, naxx, brm, and gvg. How long did u think took us to get those cards? Does it even make sense for him to join the game today and have the same card collection as u 3 months later? That's not how online games work.
This kind of discount/more gold should be done very cautiously.
Indeed, for the new players will be tougher to catch up but also it will be very frustrating for the established players/collectors, who worked a lot to complete their collection to see that a new player can get almost the same collection very easily.
Also, don't forget that this is not only a collection game, but a competitive one, and meeting a new gamer with the same cards that you get over months or years is certainly disappointing and will make you to think that you have lost your time/money with this game.
Blizz has to find the right ratio for gaining new players and taking care of the established ones. Collectors are here to stay for years so any dramatic change can ruin the game for the long term.
That's why HS team is so careful in changing cards. They only do when is absolutely necessary. This is the reason.
By the way I'm a new gamer and I don't want to have an advantage over old ones in getting cards. I've started later, this is the fact. It will not be fair to get cards easier.
As a second thought I agree that in the future, when the cards pool will be huge, there should be a way for the new players to get the classic cards quicker.

Basic neutral cards had been completely phased out after GvG. Before GvG, the last remaining basic neutral that players run in competitive decks is Chillwind Yeti, now piloted shredder takes its place in every deck, and in the future it will fall behind hungry dragon as well.
Basic neutral cards are now borderline useless and only serves as cheap alternatives for actual good cards. This discussion is not about that though, because technically u can build a complete deck with only basic cards, but it's gonna suck the big hairy meatball. So, if you wanna be competitive, u need 270 cards minus some staple basic class cards, not basic neutrals.

Wolfrider is in Face Hunter decks. But yeah, there's not a lot of point to basic neutrals.

I don't think the Devs fully understood their own game when they came up with GvG. And they definitely underestimated how powerful death rattles could be.
