The reason Blizzard are making the artificial distinction is they don't want to give players cards, they want to loan them for the season (and remove them later). I.e. because they are greedy.
This whole "Blizzard are so greedy" shtick is becoming very overdone. What is being described is not even "greed". It's entitlement (again). For example:
Entitled guy : Hey that's a nice car! Wish I had one like that. Other guy : Oh, well here's the keys. You can borrow it for a bit. Entitled guy : You mean it's mine to keep, right? Other guy : No, I'm lending it to you so you can use it. I can't just give it to you for free. Entitled guy : Ehrmegherd! You is liek, so grEeDy!
conveniently neglecting the fact that BMW guy asks the price of a small volkswagen for one ride around town.
Hearthstone has always been relatively easy to play for free or with low spending. It’s weird people complain about how “expensive” it is but don’t bother to put any time into it, so they don’t care enough about the game to play it for free but they care enough to whine about costs of things that can be earned for free
F2P is very generous in Hearthstone. If you put enough time in you can easily be playing with a large collection. Get good at arena and there was never a reason to pay. I understand the feeling of accomplishment from being F2P but I will never understand the demands of players wanting more free packs who proudly proclaim that they have ‘never put a penny into the game’.
However the cost of packs is outrageous which means anyone who cannot play the game in that manner will need to spend a LOT of money. The Tavern Pass sort of alleviates this a bit but probably could do more to encourage moderate spending.

They should probably add a similar glow as Jandice's illusions or similar to all temporary core set cards in your collection...
