Hearthstone standard is still very much in its infancy and Blizzard has been revamping its release schedule for content. Give it a couple more years and everything will begin to normalize.
The importance of having a solid classic collection is only going to increase with the larger volume of expansion sets rotating in and then out of standard. Anyone who ignores classic will eventually see the majority of their card pool rotate out of standard and into wild.
this is what rotates out:
year 1 (kraken): 1 adventure, 1 expansion
year 2 (mammoth): 2 adventures, 1 expansion
year 3 (next year): 1 adventure, 2 expansions
year 4 (in 2 years): 3 expansions
food for thought...
And then:
year 5: 3 expansions
year 6: 3 expansions
year 7: 3 expansions
and so on...
