Blizzard is a for-profit company, but they've also said they want HearthStone to be legitimately F2P and will be gifting packs/dust/etc.
With that in mind, how many free packs per expansion (or their dust equivalent) is enough without being so many players stop spending real money?
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Opening 100 packs from an expansion set is roughly equivalent to obtaining 75% of the cards in that set: (98/98) Commons, (64/72) Rares, (20/54) Epics, and (4.5/20) Legendaries.
With absolute perfect luck, 260 Packs is the fewest number of packs needed to complete an expansion set.
Due to the "Pity Timer", an Epic card will be opened within 10 packs of the last opened Epic, for that set.
Due to the "Pity Timer", a Legendary card will be opened within 40 packs of the last opened Legendary, for that set.
Statistically speaking, a Legendary card is opened every 20 packs (on average), for that set.
A player who logs in every day to only reroll/complete quests gains an average of ~60 gold per day.
I think about ten packs is good. That helps with three expansions a year. Maybe also some gold or dust. If this works good i am exited to see these merge of adventure and expansion :)
But seriously, more than simple packs, I'd welcome a Welcome bundle for each expansion, with one guaranteed legendary. I think it might greatly increase the new player experience and quick start with the new content.
I mean it worked quite well with the Old Gods.

We're are going to have 3 expansions this year. 10 packs each expension is to few. Most people can't keep up with the amount of cards. If we are going to have this every yeat we need more free shit.
100% agree with you that free packs are just samples hoping players would buy more. It also come down to rewarding all players some sort of gift considering a large part of their collection is moving to wild including the cards going to the Hall of Fame. And if you're one of those players who solely play standard mode for the freshness, anyone would welcome any sort of compensation to grow their collection again.
The week of the Expansion launch they'll be doing daily login rewards like 50 gold here and random WotOG/MSoG pack here and there which is completely fine in my opinion as any rewards will help fuel the need to collect more ;)
Earn 90 gold a day, including quest gold. And you can buy 300 packs each year. Including free packs, tavern brawl packs you get arround 375 packs. 110 from each new set, and rest 45 classic packs easily.
Ofcourse everyone wants free packs, but that's not how it works. The more free packs the more Blizzard demotivates customers to buy packs (atleast from a certain amount of packs).
I think it'd be the best for Blizzard to give a small number of packs, say 5-10. It's a way to buy hype, without reducing the motivation to buy packs too much. If Blizzard doesn't want to give any packs, that's ofcourse fine as well. They aren't obliged to give us anything.

I think 10 is fair to start a workable collection in a new expansion.
Yea and blizzard should reuire monthly subscription since the ftp players wont be screwed enough this year with no adventures
50+ packs is nothing, 4 packs a month for a year
If they were serious about free to play this would be a minimum
The free packs aren't because they want to be generous.. Its the equivalent of a drug dealer giving a free sample of the goods.
Its just a taste from blizzard, to get you to want more, and hopefully get you to spend some money down the road.
Honestly any number is great. You are getting something for free, and you are an ass if you think you are "owed" anything
EDIT: I am a (mostly) f2p player.. So I don't think you have to shell out cash if you don't want to
Seems ok.

I will be glad with 20.
I will definitely not find anything valuable! but I will be happy with process of opening.
This game is about bying or playing Pirat warrior.
P.S. grinding (for me) is not an option.
