I may be new as well, however I can suggest that you look at the deck you're trying to build. Then see how many cards are unattainable due to it being expansion or not being able to craft it. If it's not a large number, see what you currently own & see what you can replace those cards, or if there's a card you think will replace it that you don't own BUT can craft, then craft it.
Plenty. A classic deck can get to legend. Cards in your collection are much less important than just dilligence and self improvement and just being aware of the necessary grind. Do note that, while there are a lot of decks here that use a lot of different cards, most of them aren't necessarily good. Look up trump's free mage series and watch him build through a deck from the start.
As for decks that can be built without new cards: Freeze Mage, Midrange Druid, Handlock, Control Warrior, Zoo. Paladin was a bit shafted before GVG, but it's not exactly good now either so you can't really put too many points there. Shaman and Priest are also similarly weak right now. Most deck archetypes can be built with classic cards. Find lists, find cards to replace cards you don't have (there are lots of ways to replace cards in the game), stay honest, stay diligent and improve.
Despite their strength, new cards are still on par with classic cards. Hearthstone's been VERY good about power creep, and new content has stayed in line with classic content consistently. The only times cards have been notably stronger than previous cards is when they've filled a gap in the game (loatheb, belcher, dr boom, there were no good 5s or 7s in the neutrals that counted as actual minions prior to these, but they're still not necessary for many decks). Besides instances like that, cards have remained relentlessly in line, so using a classic budget line up can go pretty far if you don't get discouraged.
You need some basic cards to really make it work but there's an old mage rush deck that I feel still holds up pretty well. It's not ideal but if you are going wihtout a lot of cards you'll still find it performs ok. Look through the mage decks and search for aggro, then sort by dust cost. You'll find quite a bit that are cheap-ish and still will win you many games.
Paladin there are a few aggro decks that involve filling the board with low cost minions but they are very, very vulnerable to board clear. You'll need minimum 2x Divine Favor to make it work at all and it comes down to a lot of RNG. Not as good as the mage deck imo. You'll need lots of new or expensive cards to make any other type of pally viable.
I was just wondering if there were still any decks from the original cards without any expansions that could even compete with the new cards now.
I dont have the money for the expansions or the cards and there are so many decks i cant find a deck without any expansion cards.
So are there any that could sayyy get to rank 5 anymore?

just play face hunter with swirl cards for a rank 5.

freeze mage can do decently without any expansions
hia.
Expansions, yes. A crap ton of dust for a few Legendaries and Epics, no.
