You would never hold this in your start hand anyway.
You could draw it after the mulligan. Ben Brode confirmed it wouldn't proc if it was in your starting hand. So yeah, as stated earlier, it's a war golem

True you could draw it as your first card but it's unlikely.
Like I said I can only see this in a OTK frost Mage deck right now.
It means that this card is made 100% RNG on purpose. Thus we are expected to build a deck that benefits from random 2 dmg AOE once per game. So, what can it be?
Freeze Mage doesn't really need a 7/7 mech for 7 mana as you want to freeze or destroy the opponent's board and draw cards - there's no room to play a 7 mana minion that doesn't affect the board in any way. The random 2 damage "draw battlecry" isn't crucial to your strategy either. On the other hand, killing yourself despite the Ice Block is very real.
Leviathan obviously synergizes with Nerubian Egg - however you can't rely on it exclusively, so you have to also have buffs or multiple ways to damage your own minions. Minions that can draw cards on opponent's turn might be good too due to the totally unexpected damage - Acolyte of Pain, Loot Hoarder, Bloodmage Thalnos. You might get some benefit from damaging Enrage minions - Raging Worgen, Amani Berserker, Gurubashi Berserker, Tauren Warrior - but the chance to screw yourself is higher. Shade of Naxxramas (you can make sure no card is drawn until it's a 3/3 unless the opponent has a Coldlight Oracle or something) and Stoneskin Gargoyle can survive with no major consequences, but those cards perform even worse in a Mage deck. Finally, you might want to kill your Mad Scientists, but that generally involves trading minions, not just destroying your board.
In the end, Flame Leviathan consistently benefits you only if you have Nerubian Egg, Gurubashi Berserker and Acolyte of Pain. It has a higher chance to be useful when you play 1 big minion a turn as opposed to swarm the board and in all other circumstances it's more headache than its worth.
I'm going to be the odd one here and say that while I do not think this is amazing, I think this is better than people are giving it credit for: The 7 mana 7/7 body isn't so much bad as much as the only creature with it is a vanilla, though Flame Leviathan is a vanilla post-his effect, however the Abomination AoE is pretty nice and is only bad if you have a bunch of small guys out (In which case, why are you running Flame Leviathan in your small guys deck...) or if your guys are too injured/it really messes up your board, which is a legit issue but I don't think it'll come up often, and you get to staple a free spell onto a draw which is very nice (And it can work with Acolyte of Pain, and to an extent Egg, with Pain being nice in Mage).
It feels like one of those Legendaries you might consider for a Deck and try out sometimes, but it just doesn't always work out, but I don't think it is so much bad that iti s Cho level or anything, it could be interesting in something like Giants Mage or Midrange Mech Mage. I will say that I think the idea of being able to see you'd draw it next turn would be very cool for the card and help it play really fun.
In Arena, War Golem is a solid pick and this is War Golem with an effect that will usually be upside, so it is solid but unspectacular.

I don't think people are just upset about the mechanics. There's just no way that it even feels like a mage card, let alone one that's in the same tier as the likes of Bolvar, Malorne or the Trade Prince. It's not just bad, and weird, and random. It's generic.

I will agree that, unless some Lore says iti s Mage-y for some reason, this doesn't feel much like a Mage card outside the AoE effect.
Doesn't seem like a Mage Card - a machine?! I get it, it's a Mech - and they are the new type this expansion but - most of the other class Legendaries are humanoids - you'd think as a Mage we'd get something like that - NOT a machine.
And, it's terrible - most likely hurting yourself and your minions - its like a Mine you willfully put into your own deck. I love Mage but they sure didn't give us much love this expansion. I tweeted Ben Brode about this to explain how it's not terrible.
Flame Leviathan is a raid boss in Ulduar in World of Warcraft. It's a tank built by Titans, the creators of Azeroth ("Earth") and probably the whole universe. It's purpose is to guard the entrance to the prison of Yogg Saron, the Old God. The tank shoots missiles, burns stuff with fire and has absolutely nothing to do with Mages.
There's a little gnome in Dalaran named Minigob Manabonk that runs around turning random players into sheep. He would make a ridiculous card, something like 3/2 for 1 mana, turn a random friendly minion into a sheep. If they give every class a joke card that would be the mage's. But I would've taken him over this.
Guys maybe it would help if we complained on Blizzard's HS forums about this? Do Blizz people read this stuff here? I mean, yes, you would have to put Gurubashi Beserkers in your deck and have them out to make this even useful, but not knowing when it would go off, its still awful.
If it was opponent only it would be an okay counter to zoo / cancer hunter, but still it works only if it is drawn at the perfect time.
It's actually viable in a control OTK frost Mage deck.
Allows you to potentially remove early aggro instead of wasting a frost nova/"this is the end!" combo.
Mid/late game this can help wipe 4 health minions off the board if you use this and Blizzard
*Blizzard
What happens if this is in your starthand?
Just my 2 cents
War Golem

Terrible day for Mages.
Shameful. Shame on Blizzard.
At least Echoes of Medivh is friggin awesome.
I would've loved a Khadgar or actual Medivh as our legendary.
The lack of flavor is more insulting than the lack of power :(
True you could draw it as your first card but it's unlikely.

There will be no hint that the next card in your deck is Flame Leviathan. https://twitter.com/CM_Zeriyah/status/539920104436162561

Can you think of any other "combos" with Flame Leviathan?
Mechanically I like this card, but flavor wise it's literally the worst card they've added... ever.
